A sixty-fifth order, nonlinear dynamic model of a 235 MW natural gas fired power plant was developed. The model includes all the major process components and the control system loops required for the normal operation of the plant. The process governing equations are derived from physical conservation laws with process parameters computed from construction drawings, material properties, and plant data. The control system models are derived from circuit diagrams with control parameters computed from the resistive and capacitive values of the components and the control settings. The model is coded in FORTRAN and runs 8.5 times faster than real time on the CDC Cyber computer. One of the unique features of the model is that in can be initialized directly from actual plant measurements using a 31st. order measurement vector to compute initial conditions. The validated model has been used do predict plant behavior under steady state and transient operations and in control system and operational optimization studies. This paper describes the main aspects of the model development.

As known from other applications, it will be necessary in network control centers also to use training simulators in future, in order to prepare the staff in reacting immediatly upon unexpected events, like breakdowns, with correct operations. At Stadtwerke Duesseldorf, W-Germany, such a training simulator is in realization. The network operating system is completed by an autonomous corrplex called network simulator. The main components of this simulator herein are described, and the principles of network simulator operation outlined. Simulating the network protection equipment has a special significance in connection with network simulators. Therefore the general concept of this subsystem and the simulation of some network protecting relay types are described. Activating and running a simulation are delineated. Additional information is given with regard to system realization. Concluding the paper some remarks are made concerning hardware and computing time as well as references to advantages in transaction for similar projects using a network simulator.

Conventional analog instruments fail to achieve a satisfactory automatic control system for an automated batch system in which transient states are encountered and frequent alterations of type and/or grade vary the nature of the operations. The authors obtained even better results than expected by employing a distributed computer system in batch control. This paper presents the related hard-and software details together with an outline description of the type and/or grade control system, improved controlability, countermeasures against erroneous operations, and results given by the new system.

The paper presents a hierarchical control structure for real time flood control in a multireservoir system. The aim of the structure is to minimize the flood damages which depend on the peak water levels at the most important locations situated far downstream the reservoirs. Water releases form the individual reservoirs are adjusted by the local operators while the objective of a central authority is to modify local performance functions so as to achieve his overall goals. Due to highly uncertain forecasting of future inflows the decision mechanism of a central dispatcher is based upon fast simulation of the system operation under different flow scenarios. An application of the control structure to a case study multireservoir system is shortly described together with some selected simulation results.

This paper seals with the identification experiments carried out in the recent vears by the L.A.N. (Ship Automation Laboratory) for determining a suitable mathematical model of the ship steering dynamics. Some basic concepts concerning the mathematical models are discussed, and the experimental methods as well as the results achieved by sea—trials performed on board of two shies with definitely different characteristics are presented. Such results, obtained after analysing a very large member of fall-scale experiments, confirm the adequacy of an A.R.M.A. model for describing the ship steering process.
