Integrated predictive control and scheduling co-design for networked control system

A predictive control and scheduling co-design approach is proposed to deal with the controller and scheduler design for a set of networked control systems which are connected to a shared communication network. In the proposed approach, a predictive controller is applied to generate the control predictions for each system using delayed sensing data and previous control information, and a time delay compensator is designed at the actuator side to actively compensate for the network-induced delay in the forward channel when the control action is taken. Two different scheduling algorithms, the existing static rate monotonic (R-M) scheduling algorithm and a new dynamic scheduling algorithm called dynamic feedback scheduling (DFS), are considered to schedule the transmissions of the control signals generated by the predictive controller, which are packed and transmitted to the actuator in one packet Simultaneously. Both the scheduling algorithms are designed with the guarantee of the stability of all the systems, which is achieved by ensuring that the time delay of the systems do not exceed the upper bound under which the systems are stable. It is also pointed out that the RM algorithm is a special case of the proposed DFS algorithm, in the sense that the former can work only in a private network environment, whereas the latter extends its application to such networks where other components occupying the network. Simulations for both the RM and the DFS algorithms, illustrate the validity of the proposed approach.

A control computer is described which uses a serial digital program to control an arithmetic unit and storage system working entirely in the analogue mode. Storage is capacitive, using field-effect-transistor switches for data selection. Using conventional techniques, speeds of 20μs per arithmetic operation are readily obtainable. The first application of this computer is to aircraft-gas-turbine control. A control program, for example, of a Rolls Royce Olympus 593B engine occupies 120 instructions, and the computation has a recursion time of 3ms. An accuracy of within 0.1% is obtainable.

Intelligent backstepping control for linear induction motor drive

The design and properties of an intelligent backstepping control system for a linear induction motor (LIM) drive to track periodic reference trajectories are studied. First, the dynamic model of a field-oriented control LIM drive is derived. Then a feedback linearisation controller is designed in the sense of the backstepping control technique. To relax the requirement for the bound of lumped uncertainty in the feedback linearisation control law, a recurrent fuzzy neural network (RFNN) uncertainty observer is proposed to estimate the lumped uncertainty in real time. In addition, an online parameter training methodology derived using the Lyapunov stability theorem and the gradient descent method is proposed to increase the learning capability of the RFNN. With the proposed intelligent backstepping control system, the mover position of the LIM drive possesses the advantages of good transient control performance and robustness to uncertainties for the tracking of periodic reference trajectories. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified by both simulated and experimental results.

Air-ground integrated deployment for UAV-enabled mobile edge computing: A hierarchical game approach

In this study, the air-ground integrated deployment method is studied for the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled mobile edge computing (MEC) system. The UAV can help to reduce the delay and energy consumption of MEC. However, the limited coverage range of UAV limits the quality of data offloading. To improve the efficiency of data transmission, a hierarchical game model is designed. Ground nodes form multiple coalitions actively according to the position of UAV and the UAV adjusts the position based on the data distribution of ground networks. The relationship between the UAV and ground nodes is modelled as a Stackelberg game. A coalition formation game (CFG) is constructed for the data gathering among ground nodes. It is proved that the proposed CFG is an exact potential game with at least one Nash equilibrium. Moreover, the property of Stackelberg equilibrium is proven for the air-ground cooperative relationship. Based on the hierarchical model, a distributed air-ground integrated deployment algorithm is proposed to jointly optimise the position of the UAV and the coalition formation of ground nodes. The simulation results show that the proposed method promotes the efficiency of data transmission greatly and can converge to a stable state with reasonable iteration times.

Bluetooth wireless technology in the home

The Bluetooth(TM)* wireless technology is a cable replacement technology that exploits the wireless interconnectivity that is possible with radio. Bluetooth chips are already available and early applications include cordless connections from mobile phones to laptop computers and wireless headsets. Even if only 10% of mobile phones and computers were to incorporate Bluetooth chips, then the technology would achieve the critical mass necessary for chip prices to fall below $5 and for the standard to become firmly established in the market-place. It is expected that Bluetooth products will be present in the home, where applications will include: conversion of the humble cellphone to a short-range cordless handset;providing a link from a PC to the Internet;home automation and cable replacement;toys and white goods. This paper introduces the Bluetooth wireless technology and its applications and provides a concise description of its air interface and protocol stack.

Laboratory experiments to familiarise students with the principles of digital control structures, such as computer processors, have in the past been difficult to implement because of the quantity and complexity of the equipment needed. Many institutions have constructed small computers from MSI components, requiring 20–30 hours of a student's time, and providing little, if any, scope for experimentation. A modular approach to the data part of a digital system may be provided with modern LSI components. If a similarly modular approach is taken to the design of the control part, it is possible for an elementary computer to be assembled in as little as two or three hours. Experimentation with a variety of computer processor designs and methodologies for the implementation of the control structure is then possible within the bounds of a short laboratory course, and first hand experience of design tradeoffs can be obtained. The paper describes equipment suitable for such teaching and discusses the design of several simple computer processors intended to provide experience of the use of digital control techniques in instruction format decoding, addressing mode implementation etc.

DYNAMIC COMPUTER REGULATION OF A DRY-PROCESS CEMENT KILN

The paper describes the application of adigital computer to the dynamic regulation of a dry-process Humboldt cement kiln and its associated Fuller cooler. The background to the project and an outline of this particular process and its control problems are given. The control hardware is then briefly outlined, together with details of the kiln models and their method of derivation. Particular attention is paid to the problem of measuring the burning-zone temperature, and the close correlation of this measurement with kiln power, which can be used as an alternative indication of burning zone temperature in the short term. The control system and the discrete equations for control of the kiln are also given, together with a discussion of their functions. One feature of this application, which greatly reduced commissioning time, was the implementation of the linear and nonlinear control equations entirely by a standard conversational control package online via a control panel without programming in the conventional sense. The commissioning procedure and the results obtained under control are discussed.

The paper describes a technique for the optimisation of the parameter settings of the excitation controller of a synchronous machine which is suitable for on-site use. The optimisation method is based on an integral squarederror criterion, and involves the use of parameter sensitivity functions to estimate the parameter changes needed to alter system responses to approach some predetermined or desirable form. The computation of the parameter sensitivity functions is achieved by a direct method, which does not demand explicit identification of the controlled system and which yields the sensitivity functions of all output variables to all adjustable parameters from the results of a single-step test. The technique may be implemented using a small digital computer. The paper includes the results of simulation studies on unsynchronised and on loaded generators, together with results of micromachine experiments.

RESOLVING THE IMPASSE IN EMERGENCY SYSTEM OPERATION

Elaborate control and monitoring structures have been developed for power-system operation. The basic operating structure is hierarchically organised from the main control centre, with the added provision of numerous automatic and protective devices to assist operators in effectively controlling the power grid. Centralised control has proved effective under normal conditions and for a range of disturbances for which the power system has been planned. However for disturbances of greater severity than allowed by planning criteria, this edifice does not avert the threat to the power system. By default, it is assumed that operators can control the consequences of these calamitous disturbances. Experiences throughout the world have shown the fallacy of this assumption. The threat of calamitous system disturbances has been mostly tackled from the aspect of a centralised control. As shown in this paper, a number of insuperable difficulties are created in adopting this approach. Instead, it is possible to utilise a method of distributed intelligence within the existing hierarchical control structure. This paper demonstrates not only the feasibility of this approach, but how it can monitor the system's dynamic reactions to control the after effects of the disturbances. This would allow developments enabling power systems to successfully withstand calamitous disturbances.

Digital regulation scheme for multimode primary-side controlled flyback converter

This study described a novel digital regulation scheme for multimode primary-side controlled flyback converter. This approach ensured good energy continuity at the modes transition points of the converter. Compared with the normal control methods, the proposed digital regulation scheme could achieve smooth modes transition and suppress the large output voltage ripple when the converter works at the boundaries of different working modes. A prototype of a multimode primary-side controlled flyback converter had been made to verify the proposed digital regulation scheme.
