A new design philosophy is proposed for developing microprocessor-based power-electronic systems; it allows all the design stages from initial conception, analysis, simulation, synthesis, test and implementation, to be performed on the same microprocessor hardware/software configuration. The practical embodiment of this new design philosophy is demonstrated using a 16-bit microprocessor-based development system for the computer-aided design and real-time control of PWM inverter drives.

Diagnostic system to determine the in-service life of dry vacuum pumps

A diagnostic system for dry pumps is proposed. It predicts future pump motor current fi om time-series in-situ measurements. The prediction system has been constructed using a data acquisition system with an online system identification software algorithm. A field test on a low pressure chemical vapour deposition (LPCVD) system for the silicon nitride process predicted large values of motor current, some of which correlated well with actual motel currents as the pump became clogged. The combined use of the predicted motor current and the stability criteria shows promise in predicting the actual service life of a dry pump.

This Address introduces the tools available to produce the software for such integrated, distributed systems, and highlights the uses and deficiencies of these tools, Unless such tools are used, it is impossible to develop safe, efficient and dependable control systems, with guaranteed, correct real-time software and hardware performance.

The paper gives a tutorial exposition and discussion of the requirements that a distributed computer control system imposes on its internal communication system, and of the various ways in which this requirement can be met. The subject is considered under the following main headings: informationtransfer requirements, performance, reliability, environmental and safety considerations, physical configuration, and communication-system management. In a concluding Section the requirements of these communication systems and other serial communication systems are compared.

Delay-incorporating observability and predictability analysis of safety-critical continuous-time systems

The authors suggest a framework for human-automation interaction in safety-critical continuous systems under shared control and consider continuous-time linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamics to formalise our physical models mathematically. Their goal is to determine whether or not a given user-interface provides the information required for a certain task, under the assumption that the user does not have access to any information beyond what is provided in the display. They identify observability-based conditions under which a user-interface provides the user with necessary information to accomplish a given task, formulated as a subset of the state space. They, therefore formulate the novel delay-incorporating user-observable subspace, and the delay-incorporating user-predictable subspace and compare them with the space spanned by the combination of the states which create the task. They assume the user is a special type of observer, with capabilities corresponding to different levels of knowledge regarding the current user's input and its derivatives. In addition, they consider that state reconstruction and prediction incorporate a processing delay.

DRL-based frequency response of wind turbine generators adapting their variable regulation capabilities

Frequency response of wind turbine generators (WTGs) is a crucial technology to ensure safe integration of increasing future wind power into power grids. WTGs' regulation capabilities are variable compared to conventional generations due to uncertain wind speed and dynamic deloading factors, which affects the design of their frequency response strategy. This paper proposes a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based frequency response framework of WTGs, combining a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG)-based control and a proportional power sharing (PPS) strategy. The DDPG-based control dynamically determines the optimal total regulation power of WTGs and the PPS strategy allocates the total regulation power to each WTG. Benefiting from the ability of DDPG algorithm to handle multi-dimensional continuous system states and actions, the proposed DDPG-control enables a wind farm to dynamically determine the optimal total frequency regulation power under WTGs' variable regulation capabilities. Besides, the application of deep neural networks (DNN) in DDPG algorithm makes the DDPG-based control possible to be implemented in complex nonlinear systems. Simulations on an IEEE 39-bus system demonstrate that effectiveness of the proposed frequency response strategy of WTGs.

Extended Petri net models for fault diagnosis for substation automation

In previous work Petri net models were developed by the authors (1977) for detecting fault locations in general. In the current paper, the models have been modified to include backup protection as well as primary protection. The modification overcomes many limitations of the original models. Hence, the advanced models are more capable of analysing fault in a highly meshed network or network with more than one layer of protective devices, such as those in substations. The developed methodology is tested using an actual substation network. Fast and accurate results are obtained, and the proposed method has great potential for on-line applications.

Handling stability control strategy for four-wheel hub motor-driven vehicle based on adaptive control for road adhesion

Handling stability control can improve the safety of four in-wheel motor independent-drive electric vehicle (4MIDEV). An adaptive motion state control strategy based on improved sliding mode control for 4MIDEV is proposed to improve the steering stability control of the vehicle under different adhesion conditions. This adaptive control strategy uses a multi-layer structure, which mainly includes a motion reference layer, an upper-layer motion controller, and a lower-layer torque distribution controller. Aiming at the non-linear dynamic characteristics of 4MIDEV under different adhesion conditions, a dynamically parameter-varying motion reference layer is constructed to improve the accuracy of the reference values of sideslip angle and yaw rate, and realize the joint control of them. Considering the adhesion coefficient, construct the comprehensive yaw rate state variable, and use the improved sliding mode control algorithm to calculate the expected yaw moment. The lower-level controller uses the optimal distribution method to distribute the torque of each drive wheel in combination with the adhesion coefficient. By constructing a joint simulation platform of Carsim and Simulink, simulations under different road adhesion conditions are realized, verifying that the proposed improved strategy can effectively adapt to different adhesion conditions, while improve the handling stability of 4MIDEV.

Affine projection algorithm based adaptive control scheme for operation of variable-speed wind generator

This study presents a novel adaptive control scheme for variable-speed wind turbine (VSWT) driven permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to ensure its operation under different operating conditions. The adaptive control scheme is based on the affine projection algorithm (APA) which provides a faster convergence and less computational complexity than the least-mean-square algorithm. The proposed adaptive controller is used to control both the generator-side converter and the grid-side inverter without giving additional tuning efforts. Each vector control scheme for the converter/inverter has four APA-based adaptive proportional-integral (PI) controllers. Detailed modelling and the control strategies of the system under study are demonstrated. Real wind speed data extracted from Hokkaido island, Japan is used in this study. The dynamic characteristics of a grid-connected VSWT-PMSG are investigated in details to ensure the proposed controller operation under different operating conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive controller is compared with that obtained using optimised PI controllers by Taguchi method. The validity of the adaptive vector control scheme is verified by the simulation results which are performed using PSCAD/EMTDC environment.
