Feedback-feedforward control technique with a comprehensive mathematical analysis for single-input dual-output three-level dc-dc converter

This study proposes a control technique for single-input dual-output three-level dc-dc converter (SIDO-TLC) using feedback (FB) and feedforward (FF) principles. Through the proposed control strategy, SIDO-TLC can smoothly function in both buck and boost operating conditions with a fast dynamic. Major duties of the designed FB control loops are to noticeably decrease the recovery time of transient responses under the load variations and accurately balance the boost capacitors voltages. To effectively decouple the introduced control inputs, an external FF controller is assigned that can also enhance the buck and boost voltage regulations. Furthermore, a step-by-step assessment is contemplated based on the proposed control loops to make an offline adjustment for the FB and FF coefficients. The proposed controller implemented on SIDO-TLC is highly suitable for portable applications, where efficiency, cost, and speed are of important factors. The simulation results and the laboratory test setup of SIDO-TLC using DSP TMS320F28335 are presented to prove the validity of the presented theoretical subjects.

Fault-tolerant control in variable speed drives: a survey

A survey on fault-tolerant control is presented for variable speed drives (VSD), mainly addressing DC and induction motors. Thus, fault diagnosis, accommodation and hardware reconfiguration are reviewed with application to VSD. First, the most common fault scenarios in these electrical machines are described. These conditions are analysed, and their implications and mathematical modelling are discussed. Next, the fault diagnosis strategies based on signal processing, model-based techniques and artificial intelligence are reviewed. Moreover, the diverse hardware reconfiguration schemes of power actuators with semiconductor failures are detailed. A key piece in any VSD is the control algorithm, which can be severely affected in a fault condition. Finally, the fault accommodation schemes suggested so far in the literature are illustrated.

Blockchain: A distributed solution to UAV-enabled mobile edge computing

Mobile edge computing (MEC) is to process, analyse, store and calculate the network data at the edge of the network. When the ground infrastructure is damaged in an emergency, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) formation can be rapidly deployed to undertake the task of MEC. However, there are some potential problems to be considered in UAV-enabled MEC, such as the trust among UAVs from different sources and the stability of UAV formation network. In view of the problems existing, this study proposes a blockchain-based architecture to build a system of mutual trust, fairness, openness, and stability in this scenario. Through the implementation of blockchain technology, key data such as device computing capacity, task allocation, and task execution process are recorded openly, transparently, and irrevocably. As multi-party trust is built to reduce the occurrence of fraud, system participants can get a reasonable reward. On this basis, the smart contract is used to ensure that algorithms are accessible to the public, and the sub-blockchain technology improves the stability of the system. In the case study, the simulation results show that the resource consumption and time cost of the proposed scheme is reasonable and feasible.

ELECTRONIC AUTOMATION OF THE WEIR GATES ON THE RIVER THAMES

The Thames Water Authority recently commissioned a feasibility and design study to investigate the possibility of electronically automating the operation of the weirs along the Thames. The results of this study are incorporated in this paper and show that it should be possible to maintain the water level of each reach, measured with precision level sensors mounted above each weir, to within the order of ± 10 mm of a preset level at all times, regardless of water inflow rates, by the use of a distributed computer-based monitoring and control system. The design of this system relies on the use of an equivalent lumped rectangular cross-section model of a reach. The proposed strategy has been illustrated using data for the reach upstream of Caversham Weir and for the eight motorized weir gates at Caversham, Reading. The design has been verified using computer simulations which demonstrate that the system should be sufficiently robust to handle the expected variation of plant *** system will be operated by a lock-keeper during daylight working hours, but will otherwise be unmanned. Accordingly, detailed consideration must be given to the practical implementation of the system so that it will provide the required degree of reliability and will degrade gracefully and fail safe. The paper discusses how these requirements may be achieved.

The paper presents a detailed study of a computer-controlled queuing system with a switching network. A generating function for the state probabilities of the system and a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of statistical equilibrium for the system are derived. Further, a formula for the determination of the waiting-time distribution in the system is obtained by the use of the theory of Markov chains.

Model-driven real-time control coordination for distribution grids with medium-scale photovoltaic generation

Increasing penetration of photovoltaic (PV) generation may significantly impact existing voltage regulation schemes. In particular, the lack of coordination between control devices and fast change in PV generation can cause voltage magnitude to go beyond limits. This study addresses the issue by providing a novel real-time centralised voltage control algorithm to tackle voltage fluctuations caused by variability of PV power generation. The new method considers autonomous response of upstream voltage regulation devices and provides optimised set-points for the chosen downstream controllers. Furthermore, the investigated method was tested in the real-time digital simulator on a model of 11kV grid located in a semi-rural area of Queensland, Australia. The control algorithm was designed in MATLAB with a multidimensional, non-linear, mixed-integer optimisation. The parallel computing implementation of the KNITRO optimiser helped to provide quicker and more accurate response than the existing uncoordinated control schemes. As a result, optimised control coordination leads to a substantial reduction in voltage fluctuations and decrease in regulation time. Moreover, the proposed method detects and eliminates unnecessary control operations. Thus, it can also prevent voltage hunting in distribution networks.

Multi-agent co-ordination for the secondary voltage control in power-system contingencies

The secondary voltage control of power systems initiated by EDF has been developed successfully and applied mainly for the generator AVRS to improve power-system voltage stability. Work on secondary voltage control is presented involving various types of power-system voltage controllers, AVRs, SVCs and STATCOMs, for a new application: power-system voltage management in system contingencies. The secondary voltage control is proposed, to be implemented based on the principles of multi-agent system theory, an active branch of applications in the distributed artificial intelligence. An example power system is presented to demonstrate the necessity of the secondary voltage control among an AVR, an SVC and a STATCOM installed in the power system, and also to illustrate the success of applying the multi-agent co-ordination for their secondary voltage control in system contingencies.

Design of controller and communication for frequency regulation of a smart microgrid

In this study an isolated microgrid comprising both controllable and uncontrollable sources, like solar, wind, diesel generator, fuel cell, aqua-electrolyser, hydrogen storage and battery is considered. To establish an efficient resource management strategy, a central controller takes the decisions based on the status of the loads and sources. The status is obtained with the help of multi-agent concept (treating each load and source as an agent) through internet using User Datagram Protocol/Internet Protocol (UDP/IP). The decisions are transmitted to the controllable sources to regulate their power output for damping of frequency excursion following a disturbance. A control strategy is adopted to regulate the power output from the battery only during transient, resulting in a floating battery scheme in steady state. This will reduce the ampere hour rating of the battery and can improve the damping of frequency excursion following each load disturbance. In a microgrid with generation rate constraint (GRC), tuning of controller parameters and frequency bias is a nonlinear optimisation problem. Hence, this study attempts to tune the controller parameters using an evolutionary technique named bacterial foraging optimisation (BFO). The tuned gains obtained utilising BFO method give satisfactory frequency excursion following a disturbance in the microgrid.

Rapid prototyping of power electronics converters for photovoltaic system application using Xilinx System Generator

The aim of this study is to develop a research platform for rapid prototyping of the power electronics converters for solar photovoltaic (PV) system applications. This study describes the field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based hardware-inthe- loop (HIL) simulation of voltage source inverter (VSI) used for PV system power conversion. The PV system and inverter models are realised in simulation as part of the HIL to test the real-time functionality of the FPGA controller. The generation of switching control signals for the VSI and its interface with the PV system is developed through the Xilinx System Generator (XSG) domain. The XSG automatically generates the VHSIC hardware description language (VHDL) code using hardware description language co-simulation for generation of gating signal for modulation of the VSI. To validate the proposed approach, the sinusoidal pulse-width modulation using bipolar and unipolar switching schemes and current control method have been tested for the PV supported VSI. The proposed approach of the rapid prototype model has been designed and implemented in the laboratory through XSG and MATLAB/SIMULINK interface. Performance comparison between the software simulation and real-time HIL simulation has been demonstrated.

Quantised control design for networked control systems

Problems of the quantised stabilisation and quantised H. control design for networked control systems (NCSs) are considered here. First, an NCS system model is proposed which considers the effects of both network-induced delay and quantisation levels. Then, sufficient conditions for the stabilisation and H. control design are derived using the Lyapunov functional approach and shown in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). By solving LMIs, the feedback gain matrix, the H-infinity performance level and the quantisation parameters can be obtained. Finally, an illustrative example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
