H_∞ fault-tolerant control of networked control systems with actuator failures

The problem of H-infinity fault-tolerant control for networked control systems (NCSs) with actuator failures is addressed in this study. The authors consider the network-induced delays, including sensor-to-controller delay and controller-to-actuator delay, to have both an upper bound and a non-zero lower bound. By using a sampled-data approach, a new model is formulated based on the updating instants of the ZOH. They derive the criteria which ensure that the sample-data NCS is stable with H-infinity norm gamma. The authors design the H-infinity fault-tolerant controller that guarantees the closed-loop NCS stability with H-infinity norm gamma, when all control components are operational, as well as when some actuators fail to operate. Simulation examples are given to show the effectiveness and less conservative needs of the proposed method.

Boots' new energy centre

The Boots Company has operated a power station on the Beeston site in Nottingham for over 60 years. During the last three years a new energy centre has been designed, constructed and commissioned. The energy centre provides all electricity, steam, compressed air and medium-pressure hot water for the site. Some conceptual and detailed decisions resolved during the project are outlined, including matters relating to plant selections, equipment specification, and control and monitoring philosophy.

Online estimation of system parameters for artificial intelligence applications to load frequency control

Making balance between generation and demand is the operating principle of the load frequency control. As the automatic generation control (AGC) has been commissioned to serve load-generation balance for several decades, the developmental roadmap of the AGC is leading to the adaptive or artificial intelligence (AI) applications to the controller design. Among the AI applications, the genetic algorithm (GA) and the fuzzy inference system (FIS) are often adopted to optimise AGC gains under the time-varying system conditions. Relevant studies indicate that the real-time acquisition of system states would be advantageous for AGC to drive system to the optimal condition. However, some of the system parameters are not easily accessible. The object of getting good estimate of system parameters in real-time basis would definitely enhance the performance of the intelligence applications to AGC. This study explores the use of recursive least square algorithm for acquiring the system parameters in real time. As such, a more accurate reference model would be gainfully used in the AI controller design. Issues related to the model validation in the simulation and field test are presented. Following that, the use of the reference model in the GA as well as the FIS applications for the optimal gain scheduling of the AGC is demonstrated.

Islanding detection and load shedding scheme for radial distribution systems integrated with dispersed generations

This study presents a novel islanding detection and optimal load shedding scheme for radial distribution systems integrated with dispersed generation (DG). A simple and effective passive islanding detection method is developed based on the phase-space technique and using a probabilistic neural network-based classifier. After the system detects unintentional islanding state, it utilises an optimal load shedding scheme to prevent system collapse due to load-generation mismatch and voltage instability encountered in the islanded part of the system. The optimal load shedding scheme is developed based on the backtracking search algorithm. Extensive tests conducted with the DigSilent Power Factory((R)) software and MATLAB((R)) software on the IEEE 33-bus system with four DG units considering several scenarios of islanding condition were utilised to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed islanding detection method and the optimal load shedding scheme. The results showed that the proposed method can effectively detect the islanding events and stabilise the islanded part of the system with minimum load curtailment.

AI APPLICATION FOR PROCESS REGULATION AND SERVO control

The paper demonstrates how AI and fuzzy logic techniques can be combined to implement real-time, regulatory and servo control of a simple process unit. The knowledge base for the regulatory controller was designed to provide smooth control near the set point, ‘typical’ feedback control in the intermediate region and as much control as necessary (available) to prevent the controlled variable from exceeding user-specified constraints. The servo controller implemented fast open-loop set-point changes by using two-level bang-bang control, and the knowledge base included rules to learn the switching parameters online. The controllers were implemented, in Prolog, on an IBM PC and interfaced to an actual process using an industrial PID controller as an interface. Experimental results showed that control performance met the objectives better than a conventional fixed-gain PID controller.

In the past decade, the security of industrial control systems has emerged as a research priority in order to safeguard our critical infrastructures. A large number of research efforts have focused on intrusion detection in industrial networks; however, few of them discuss what to do after an intrusion has been detected. Because the safety of most of these control systems is time sensitive, we need new research on automatic incident response. This article shows how software-defined networks and network function virtualization can facilitate automatic incident response to a variety of attacks against industrial networks. It also presents a prototype of an incident-response solution that detects and responds automatically to sensor attacks and controller attacks. This work shows the promise that cloud-enabled software-defined networks and virtual infrastructures hold as a way to provide novel defense-in-depth solutions for industrial systems. This article is part of a special issue on Software Safety and Security Risk Mitigation in Cyber-physical Systems.

The authors discuss the application of expert systems programming techniques to the design of lead-lag compensators for a linear, single-input/single-output, continuous-time plant. A design method based on first adjusting the high-frequency response with lead and constant-gain compensators followed by adjusting the low-frequency response with lag compensators has been developed. This design heuristic is presented and its ability to achieve specifications for a range of different plants is discussed. The heuristic has been implemented using the production rule knowledge representation; examples of production rules are given and their use is discussed. Inference-engine capabilities and extensions to a conventional analysis and design package, required to implement this automatic control system design method, are also outlined.

In the automotive industry vehicles are undergoing significant change, with much of the traditional mechanical control emphasis moving to distributed electronic systems. This article looks at an emerging time-triggered scheme, which is being retrofitted to the well known in-vehicle controller Area Network. This new time-triggered CAN will guarantee reliable scheduling of control messages within the automotive electronics environment.

CIM AND control OF PRESSURE DIE-CASTING IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

The successful introduction of highly automated machines into a predominantly manual environment requires careful planning and support. Ford Motor Company in Belfast realised that its electronic/control expertise needed to be strengthened when it embarked on automating its die-casting facilities and saw the Teaching Company Scheme as a good means of obtaining the necessary technology transfer. So successful was the first scheme that a follow-on was established. This article gives an overview of the work of the Teaching Company Associates and the tangible benefits which have resulted. The pressure die-casting environment is a harsh one for young control engineers to 'cut their teeth' in, but the experience gained has fitted them for successful careers in engineering.
