UAV-assisted content-based sensor search in IoTs

'Internet of things' (IoT) operates for all-time availability of network components to provide a wide range of service applications to the network users or clients. IoT operates for a large number of applications, and one of these include the sensor deployment for data support to clients. However, these sensors require a large number of queries to be handled by the network components considering the constraints of memory, energy, and delays. These issues can be easily tackled by deploying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which serve as dynamic nodes to handle clients' queries by acting as on-demand gateways. However, this UAV-assisted IoT requires efficient localisation to determine the sensor for handling multiple-content queries, which is considered as a problem. A cost function is formed in the proposed approach to generate an optimisation problem which is resolved using a radial basis function kernel support vector machine. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated in terms of significant gains attained in terms of error in the cost function, overheads in handling queries, and accuracy in UAV allocation.

Autonomous trail-following unmanned aerial vehicle system based on resource partitioning of single hardware platform

As deep neural networks are spreading to almost all fields, flight systems in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) domain are undergoing various transitions to intelligent systems. Among these transitions-in a bid to reduce flight risk-is the active research domain of autonomous navigation for intelligent UAVs. The autonomous trail-following flight system that this letter introduces can safely consolidate flight control and mission control within the latest commercial hardware platform. The resource usage and degradation of pass-through delay in vision-based convolutional neural network workloads show that virtualisation overhead is not significantly negative, and the overall performance of the introduced system is acceptable. Real-time cooperation is also verified as achievable-in that the workloads incur minimal communication delay-between the controls. Finally, the actual field test analysis demonstrates the applicability of our autonomous UAV system, whereby our system controls the UAV to follow the centre of a set trail.

Fibre quality and wetlap thickness, the most influential variables in the panel and board industries, have traditionally been manually controlled by operators. The effect of this is that product quality and, ultimately, plant efficiency and profitability are a function of operator opinion and diligence. This article describes the design and implementation of a predictive and self-learning rule-base controller in a panel board mill. The systems enable the company to automatically control product quality, meet the order-winning criteria and maximise efficiency regardless of feedstock quality. The systems also allow the user to manufacture quality board from scrap such as waste pallets, saw mill off-cuts and storm-damaged trees.

Real time implementation of artificial neural networks-based controller for battery storage supported wind electric generation

Energy storage systems have established their capability to overcome the problems caused by intermittent nature of renewable sources when integrated to existing grid. Voltage and frequency control, as well as load shifting can be done using grid level storage systems incorporated with renewable sources. They can effectively serve the system as an energy sink and source. Operational use of energy storage for grid level support of a wind electric generator (WEG) is demonstrated in this study. The battery storage supported WEG along with controllers is modelled. Artificial neural network controller, which is having inherent learning capability, is developed to regulate the power flow between wind generator and utility grid. The proposed algorithm and the corresponding controller are simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and implemented in the DSP processor. The real time data exchange between Simulink and the floating point DSP processor TMSF32028335 is realised using on-board JTAG emulator. The hardware implementation using DSP processor presented in this work establishes the efficacy of the proposed control strategy for real time applications.

Recurrent neural network non-singular terminal sliding mode control for path following of autonomous ground vehicles with parametric uncertainties

Uncertain characteristics along with unknown exterior disturbances are fundamental issues in the path-following control of autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs). Here, a novel robust non-singular terminal sliding mode (NTSM) control method based on a recurrent neural network (RNN) structure is proposed to enhance the path-following performance of AGVs. First, based on the dynamic model and path-following model of AGVs, the robust NTSM steering controller is proposed to ensure that the lateral offset converges to zero within a limited time, and concurrently suppresses the chattering phenomenon that occurs in the regular sliding mode control (SMC) strategy. Then, the RNN is applied to approximate the unknown dynamics section of the system online. With an implied feedback loop, its study ability precedes the regular neural network to catch up with the dynamic response. In addition, the adaptive learning algorithms of the parameters in the RNN are derived using the Lyapunov stability theorem and Taylor linearisation technique to ensure the stability of the closed-loop system. Finally, the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed control approach against parametric uncertainties and unknown external disturbances are verified in the Simulink-CarSim simulation platform by comparison with selected reported control methods.

A linear algebra method to decompose forms whose length is lower than the number of variables into weighted sum of squares

In this paper, an algorithm based on linear algebra tools is proposed to compute a weighted sum of squares decomposition of a given form whose length is lower than the number of variables. Such an objective is pursued by using linear algebra techniques to perform tasks that are usually carried out through computational algebraic geometry tools. Several examples are reported to show that the use of linear algebra rather than algebraic geometry leads to a reduction of the execution times, without affecting the effectiveness of the algorithm. Applications of the given procedure to system analysis and to control design problems are reported as well as a detailed complexity analysis.

Theatres generally have a substantial number of hoists etc. for moving scenery during performances, but one never needs to use more than a proportion of them at any one time. The number of drive controllers provided can therefore be limited to the maximum number needed for simultaneous use, and these can be connected to the required set of hoists through a switching network. The paper gives an account of the design of the switching network developed for the Olivier Theatre, and of the algorithm which selects paths through this network during operational use. The algorithm is implemented on a minicomputer.

One of the obstacles to the more extensive use of nonlinear models in the control of highly nonlinear systems, such as chemical processing equipment, is the computational difficulty of solving the relevant nonlinear differential algebraic equations in real time. Transputer systems offer sufficient power to enable these equations to be handled rapidly and are now cheap enough to enable their implementation as dedicated control room equipment to be considered. Feedforward/feedback control of a nonlinear process, a distillation column, has been simulated on a Meiko transputer system to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach. The effective use of parallel computers requires that parallelism be exploited by choice of problem decomposition. A strategy which maximises parallelisation in the simulation of a distillation column is described.

Dual function ferroresonance and fault current limiter based on DC reactor

This study presents a novel DC reactor-based ferroresonance and fault current limiter (DRFFCL) for stabilising ferroresonance oscillations of potential transformer (PT) in 33 kV distribution network and decreasing the amplitude of the fault current to an acceptable level. At first, the ferroresonance overvoltage is introduced and various types of overvoltage in the PT are studied. Then, the effects of the suggested DRFFCL on these oscillations are investigated. It is shown that the proposed DRFFCL not only can control the ferroresonance oscillations, but also can decrease the fault current amplitude in the case of short-circuit faults occurrence. The DRFFCL performance is simulated using MATLAB software and a scaled-down laboratory prototype is implemented and tested for the simulation results validation. The measured results are in agreement with the simulation results and clearly show the ability of the DRFFCL for controlling both the ferroresonance overvoltage and fault current.
