Stochastic observer-based guaranteed cost control for networked control systems with packet dropouts

The observer-based guaranteed cost control problem in networked control systems with random data packet dropouts is dealt with. The sensor-to-controller and controller-to-actuator packet dropouts are both modelled by two mutually independent stochastic variables satisfying the Bernoulli binary distribution. A new observer is designed to estimate the states and system input simultaneously by constructing an augmented system in which the original system input is regarded as a new state. Based on this observer, a guaranteed cost controller is designed such that the closed-loop system is stochastically exponentially mean-square stable and the cost function value is not more than a specified upper bound. The controller design problem is transformed to a convex optimisation problem that can be solved by a linear matrix inequality approach. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

Self-tuning indirect adaptive control of non-inverting buck-boost converter

This study presents an approach to system identification and adaptive control of a non-inverting buck-boost converter in the presence of large signal changes, uncertainty of converter components and effects of imperfect modelling. Feedback loops of DC-DC converters are typically designed conservatively so that the closed-loop regulation and stability margins are maintained over a pre-determined range of operating conditions. The proposed approach is able to keep a high-performance response without the instability issue of dynamic change of the converter. In the presence of uncertainty on the parameters of a DC-DC converter, a digital adaptive controller based on system identification and minimum degree pole placement is proposed. To verify the validity of the proposed digital controller, an experimental setup is constructed for a non-inverting buck-boost converter and the fully digital adaptive control is implemented by a micro controller. The experimental results show the capability of an adaptive controller during different operating points.

Dynamic control systems for AGVs

AGVs are automatic load carriers that transfer objects from one location to another in a factory environment. Due to the increasing complexity of factory floor environments coupled with the need for increased flexibility in AGV systems, it is becoming increasingly important to be able to cont;ol AGV fleets dynamically. In this article, a neural-network-based method for controlling AGVs is presented.

Dual-mode control of multi-functional converter in solar PV system for small off-grid applications

Solar PV system for off-grid applications is growing at a faster rate because of its compatibility and ease of implementation. The modern smart building consists of hybrid AC and DC loads. The solar PV system generates DC power and can also supply the DC loads. To supply the AC loads, the DC power need conversion to AC using a DC-AC converter. A general solar PV system consists of two stages, one is to extract the maximum power and the other one is to convert it into a suitable DC or AC. Here, a single-stage multi-functional converter (MFC) is employed, which extracts maximum power and supplies to both AC and DC loads. To overcome the intermittency of solar PV output, battery energy storage is interfaced through a non-isolated buck-boost converter. The MFC operates in two modes, i.e. hybrid power flow mode and inverter mode, depending upon the availability of solar PV output. The proposed system is simulated using the PSCAD/EMTDC software. An experimental test setup using solar array simulator and a multifunctional power electronics converter has been developed for demonstration of the results. The control algorithms are implemented using NI PXI-7842R series FPGA controller through LabVIEW platform.

Automating the digital broadcast process: control, complexity and cost

Ten years of technical, commercial and organisational change have impacted profoundly on the traditional broadcast model. Key developments in data compression, storage and transmission technologies over this period have rendered legacy operational methodologies and manual practices of control of broadcast devices outmoded, unreliable and financially untenable. This paper discusses why the migration towards sophisticated, fully-automated multichannel broadcast environments is inevitable if staffing efficiency, revenue generation and consumer satisfaction are to be maximised and maintained, and details the many facets of the design process that must be considered if successful implementation is to result.

Fuzzy optimisation based control of a solar array system

The authors describe the analysis, modelling and implementation of a fuzzy based photovoltaic peak power tracking system. The maximum power of a photovoltaic system changes with temperature, solar intensity and load. An analytical model is built for the solar cell on the basis of the manufacturer's characteristics. The solar panel is integrated with the converter model and a fuzzy algorithm is developed, so as to perform an online search procedure to track the maximum power continuously. The system is implemented by an inexpensive RISC microcontroller. Experimental results have shown excellent performance, robustness with parameter variation and modularity for parallel operation at higher power. The system is ready and easy to fit into existing installations.

This synchronous motor drive, unlike the DC link convertor drive, has a single mode of operation from starting to above synchronous speeds. The simple control scheme requires synchronism to the supply waveforms and rotor position. Hardware, software and interface circuits for a Z80 microprocessor-based controller are described. A modest clock rate of 2.5 MHz is sufficient and still leaves the microprocessor 88% idle. High levels of control, and possibly some diagnostic features, can therefore be included.

A robust non-linear MPC framework for control of underwater vehicle manipulator systems under high-level tasks

Over the last years, the development and control of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles with attached robotic manipulators, also called Underwater Vehicle Manipulator System (UVMS), has gained significant research attention. In such applications, feedback controllers which guarantee that the end-effector of the UVMS is fulfilling desired complex tasks should be designed in a way that state and input constraints are taken into consideration. Furthermore, due to their complicated structure, unmodeled dynamics as well as external disturbances may arise. Complex tasks can be conveniently given in the so-called Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). Motivated by this, the authors develop a combined abstraction and control synthesis framework in which, given the uncertain kinematics/dynamics of the UVMS, a workspace divided into Regions of Interest and a desired LTL task, a sequence of feedback control laws that probably guarantee the LTL formula is provided. The proposed controller falls within the tube-based non-linear model predictive control methodology and can handle the rich expressivity of LTL in both safety and reachability specifications. Numerical simulations verify the validity of the proposed framework.

Real-time hardware- and software-in-the-loop simulation of decentralised distribution network control architecture

This study introduces a laboratory test set up developed to evaluate the functionality of a novel decentralised distribution automation architecture. The demonstration system consists of a simulated distribution network in real-time simulation environment including simulated monitoring and control devices as well as physical devices interfaced with the simulator as hardware-in-the-loop test devices. System involves also substation automation units for real-time monitoring and control that are interfaced with the simulator and physical devices. The operating principle of the system is demonstrated with an example simulation case. The main goal for this system was to test the functionality of the decentralised distribution automation architecture and track out any potential interfacing issues of automation system before implementing the concept to actual field demonstrations. Based on the tests executed with the system described in this study, the proper functionality of all the features of the automation architecture was verified and successfully deployed at the field test sites.

On model-based detectors for linear time-invariant stochastic systems under sensor attacks

A vector-valued model-based cumulative sum (CUSUM) procedure is proposed for identifying faulty/falsified sensor measurements. First, given the system dynamics, the authors derive tools for tuning the CUSUM procedure in the fault/attack-free case to fulfil the desired detection performance (in terms of false alarm rate). They use the widely-used chi-squared fault/attack detection procedure as a benchmark to compare the performance of the CUSUM. In particular, they characterise the state degradation that a class of attacks can induce the system while enforcing that the detectors (CUSUM and chi-squared) do not raise alarms. In doing so, they find the upper bound of state degradation that is possible by an undetected attacker. They quantify the advantage of using a dynamic detector (CUSUM), which leverages the history of the state, over a static detector (chi-squared), which uses a single measurement at a time. Simulations of a chemical reactor with a heat exchanger are presented to illustrate the performance of their tools.
