Transformer-based inverter with reduced number of switches for renewable energy applications

Multilevel inverters generate high-level voltage with high quality and low-harmonic distortion, and these unique properties have increased their applications in renewable energy sources. However, these inverters require several passive components and a complex pulse width modulation (PWM) control method. Besides, they suffer from voltage balancing problems. In this work, a new inverter has proposed that generates seven-level voltage from one DC source by reduced number of switches which does not exhibit any voltage balancing problem. The proposed inverter without any extra boost circuit is able to increase the input voltage. The voltage stress on all the switches in the proposed inverter is the same. In this study, variable amplitude phase disposition PWM control method that is compatible with the proposed inverter is developed. Moreover, extended structure of the proposed inverter and its new algorithm in generating all odd and even voltage levels are proposed. To validate the performance of the inverter, a prototype has been built and tested and also its performance has been modelled using PSCAD/EMTDC software package. Very good agreement has been achieved between experimental results and simulations.

The amount of technologies that appear every day as educational applications is surprising. Within the sciences area we can highlight the technologies for the study of programming and robotics, that help students of all skill levels to develop their logical thinking and propose functional prototypes to solve their problems of everyday life. The applicability of these technologies makes them excellent learning objects by allowing interaction with learners. This article presents a case of successful implementation of a robotics lab for a city of the state of Espirito Santo, in Brazil, which is now in replication, to ensure access to this technology to all students of elementary school. With the help of robotics learning objects, such as LEGO Mindstorms kit, Arduino boards, programming simulators and Internet of Things concepts, we propose here a methodology based on leaning projects for learning technological concepts of robotics and computer automation.

Probabilistic analysis of gear flank micro-pitting risk in wind turbine gearbox using supervisory control and data acquisition data

This study investigates the probabilistic risk of gear tooth flank micro-pitting in wind turbine (WT) gearboxes and shows how relatively slow rate of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data, recorded during operation, can be used to analyse the onset of gear surface damage. Field measured time series of SCADA signals, including wind speed, generator power and rotational speed, were used to obtain the statistical variation of gear shaft torque and rotational speed. From the SCADA data obtained over a 2.2 year period random number datasets of smaller sizes were selected. Based on these random number datasets the effect of gear shaft torque and rotational speed variations on the probabilistic risk of gear micro-pitting was investigated. Determinations of the gear tooth flank contact stress and lubricant film thickness were based on the technical report of gear micro-pitting, ISO/TR 15144-1 (2010). The study has shown that the considered pinion gear is subjected to high load conditions resulting in high contact stresses. The variation of rotational speed causes greater sliding between the gear teeth. The results of specific lubricant film thicknesses have shown that there is considerable risk of gear micro-pitting under the operational conditions recorded from the SCADA field data.

Real time implementation of artificial neural networks-based controller for battery storage supported wind electric generation

Energy storage systems have established their capability to overcome the problems caused by intermittent nature of renewable sources when integrated to existing grid. Voltage and frequency control, as well as load shifting can be done using grid level storage systems incorporated with renewable sources. They can effectively serve the system as an energy sink and source. Operational use of energy storage for grid level support of a wind electric generator (WEG) is demonstrated in this study. The battery storage supported WEG along with controllers is modelled. Artificial neural network controller, which is having inherent learning capability, is developed to regulate the power flow between wind generator and utility grid. The proposed algorithm and the corresponding controller are simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and implemented in the DSP processor. The real time data exchange between Simulink and the floating point DSP processor TMSF32028335 is realised using on-board JTAG emulator. The hardware implementation using DSP processor presented in this work establishes the efficacy of the proposed control strategy for real time applications.

This paper presents a real-world proven solution for dynamic street light control and management which relies on an open and flexible Internet of Things architecture. Substantial contribution is brought at the interoperability level using novel device connection concept based on model-driven communication agents to speed up the integration of sensors and actuators to Internet of Things platforms. The paper shows also results from real-world tests with deployed dynamic street lights in urban spaces. The proposed dynamic light control solution permits an energy saving of about 56% compared to classical static, time-based street light control.

Worldwide considerable resources in terms of R&D have commissioned in the field of electrical mobility. Due to the significant dissemination of Electric Vehicles (EVs) predicted in the near future, the concept of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) will be practically achievable, to improve the integration of renewable energy into distribution networks and leads to economic and environment benefits, supporting the grid operation, reducing substation transformers and line overloading to defer or even avoid investments. In the paper, an intelligent and decentralized Multi Agent System for managing EV charging/discharging in LV distribution networks is proposed.

Despite the phenomenal advances in the computational power and functionality of electronic systems, human-machine interaction has largely been limited to simple control panels, keyboard, mouse and display. Consequently, these systems either rely critically on close human guidance or operate almost independently from the user. An exemplar technology integrated tightly into our lives is the smartphone. However, the term “smart” is a misnomer, since it has fundamentally no intelligence to understand its user. The users still have to type, touch or speak (to some extent) to express their intentions in a form accessible to the phone. Hence, intelligent decision making is still almost entirely a human task. A life-changing experience can be achieved by transforming machines from passive tools to agents capable of understanding human physiology and what their user wants [1]. This can advance human capabilities in unimagined ways by building a symbiotic relationship to solve real world problems cooperatively. One of the high-impact application areas of this approach is assistive internet of things (IoT) technologies for physically challenged individuals. The Annual World Report on Disability reveals that 15% of the world population lives with disability, while 110 to 190 million of these people have difficulty in functioning [1]. Quality of life for this population can improve significantly if we can provide accessibility to smart devices, which provide sensory inputs and assist with everyday tasks. This work demonstrates that smart IoT devices open up the possibility to alleviate the burden on the user by equipping everyday objects, such as a wheelchair, with decision-making capabilities. Moving part of the intelligent decision making to smart IoT objects requires a robust mechanism for human-machine communication (HMC). This paper focuses on voltage control schemes for low-voltage DC (LVDC) distribution systems that has been studied for electrification of rural sides in South Korea. Telecommunication repeaters on mountain tops can be a good application for LVDC systems because it needs DC power rather than AC and low-voltage distribution can reduce the operation and maintenance costs for distribution network operators (DNOs). However, low-voltage distribution can suffer voltage regulation issues depending on the size of the systems. This paper presents the design concept of multi-agent based hierarchical control schemes for distribution voltage regulation and evaluation of the control performance by simulation studies.

control software and platforms for single or cooperative robots are highly complicated because they coordinate and administer the interaction of a variety of distributed and heterogeneous hardware and software components in a dynamic world. While most of such systems built on some uniform middleware or control system for all distributed nodes which come with restrictions in flexibility on several levels, we aim at a more flexible and open architecture of autonomous components in the style of IoT. In this paper, we introduce a platform independent robotics framework based on an IoT technology and protocols. We compare our architecture with other recent approaches and according to fundamental criteria, we discuss advantages and drawbacks.
