Holonic structure: a state-of-the-art control architecture based on multi-agent systems for optimal reactive power dispatch in smart grids

This study presents a hierarchical distributed structure based on the Holonic concept for reactive power control in smart grids. Holons, as the main parts of the proposed framework, are able to negotiate together, change their boundaries, and alter the role of their members. These abilities improve the flexibility and performance of the novel structure in order to adapt itself to different situations. The proposed methodology is successfully scrutinised through different case studies based on a transmission test system connected to seven distribution networks. The new method is compared with two structures using a set of evaluation indices. The simulation results have revealed that improving the computational efficiency, minimising the active power losses and voltage deviations, optimal utilisation of reactive power sources, less data traffic loads, and increasing the fault tolerance are some key features of the proposed approach.

Active zero voltage switching tracking controller design for class E inverter to counteract the resonant components shifting

On the basis of zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation, the class E resonant converter provides excellent conversion efficiency even though it works on high frequency. Unfortunately, the ZVS operation is sensitive to the circuit situations. While the circuit components are shifting, the ZVS working will drift around the dominant point and it may fail to work on ZVS. In this study, an active ZVS tracking control method is proposed to cope with the circuit components shifting. On the basis of an exact analysis of the ZVS operation conditions, first a searching procedure is proposed to decide the optimal switching frequency. Next, through the current phase feedback, the active ZVS tracking controller is built to retain the circuit works on optimum ZVS operation by adaptively tuning the switching frequency to counteract the components shifting. In addition to the theoretical analysis and computer simulation, the proposed tracking controller has been applied to implement a 1.3 MHz class E inverter with a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based controller.

In this study, the remote control of a mini electronic arm has been targeted by using a wireless communication module with the contribution of Internet of Things and 3 dimensional printing concepts. Firstly, circuit design has been completed with a microcontroller, 2 servo motors and a wireless communication module. The mechanical parts have been produced by using a 3D printer and assembled with electronic circuit parts. The mini electronic arm is controlled through the serial monitor of the microcontroller. A user interface has been designed and the motion control of the mini electronic arm has been made possible over the Internet.

Design of energy efficient optical networks with software enabled integrated control plane

The growing energy consumption has posed new challenges for the future development of networks. Some earlier work has proposed solutions to improve energy consumption based on the existing control plane, for example, node/links sleeping. This study presents a new possibility to reduce network energy consumption by proposing a new integrated control plane structure utilising Software Defined Networking technologies. The integrated control plane increases the efficiencies of exchanging control information across different network domains, while introducing new possibilities to the routing methods and the control over quality of service (QoS). The structure is defined as an overlay generalised multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS) control model. With the defined structure, the integrated control plane is able to gather information from different domains (i.e. optical core network and the access networks), and enable energy efficiency networking over a wider area. In the case presented, the integrated control plane collects the network energy related information and the QoS requirements of different types of traffic. This information is used to define the specific group of traffic's ( flow's) routing behaviours. With the flexibility of the routing structure, results show that the energy efficiency of the network can be improved without compromising the QoS for delay/blocking sensitive services.

Optimisation of energy efficiency based on average driving behaviour and driver's preferences for automated driving

The implementation of anticipating driving styles in adaptive cruise control systems promises to considerably reduce fuel consumption of vehicles. As drivers have to accept the optimised driving styles of such systems, which implement longitudinally automated driving, the optimisation results should not deviate strongly from the average driving behaviour. This work presents an approach to the optimisation of the vehicle's longitudinal dynamics, which is based on a predicted average driving profile. The proposed approach ensures that the optimisation results meet the expectations of drivers by directly accounting for driver's preferences on weighting up travel time against fuel consumption relative to the average driving profile. Based on human decision finding, rational and intuitive planning decisions are modelled in a cost function and represent optimisation constraints. The approach generally includes information from vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication (V2X), which is an extension to the state-of-the-art. This study describes the optimisation approach and presents a method to determine suitable optimisation parameters in order to consider driver's preferences. The optimisation approach is applied in a simulated test drive and improvements in fuel economy are analysed. Finally, the authors sketch a reference system architecture to prove the feasibility of the presented approach.

Future safety critical space missions call for increasing levels of embedded spacecraft autonomy. Spacecraft and mission responsiveness will be highly improved via on-board automation and autonomy functions, simplifying operations and ground control capabilities. Recently developed real-time embedded MPC guidance and control strategies have a great potential for the next generation of high performance reusable ESA launch vehicles and GNC systems. This paper addresses these technologies for real-time embedded MPC covering thrust vectored control that could be proficiently used during the ascent phase as well as on powered descent enabling accurate pin-point landing features.

This paper presents a method to recognize a robotic arm in space using the Hough circles method. The robotic arm has colored bottle stoppers glued at the joints, which are recognized with color filtering. After this step, the biggest colored spot is detected and marked using the Hough circle method. The joints are numbered, this way each joint's position is known. The joints can be united with lines and this way a skeleton of the robotic arm can be drawn which can be loaded in a PC to create a control application.

The goal of this paper is to present the software tool WebPIDDESIGN for complex management of PID controller design. This tool is suitable for those who need to design the PID controller for the simple closed-loop feedback in an effective and user-friendly way. This paper provides a tutorial on the continuation/GMRES method (C/GMRES), which is a real-time optimization algorithm tailored for nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) and a Maple version of AutoGenU, which is an automatic code generation system utilizing a symbolic computation language to simulate NMPC with C/GMRES. Once such settings of NMPC as the state equation and performance index are specified in a Maple worksheet, a problem-dependent C source file is automatically generated by symbolic computation, compiled, and executed. The worksheet also loads data files of simulation results and plots their time histories. This paper describes the usage and settings of AutoGenU for Maple.

People detection and re-identification is a crucial capability for mobile robots working in a human environment, as well as for human-robot interaction. Re-identification systems can be based on the observation of a number of cues, including the analysis of the human body pose, that can be accurately detected analyzing RGB-D data, currently widely used in robot vision. On the other hand, intelligent video surveillance is going towards multi-viewpoint RGB camera systems: skeletal trackers working on images are currently unable to provide performance similar to those based on 3D data. To overcome such flaws, this paper proposes a method for merging together the results provided by a body pose estimation algorithm observing the same scene from different viewpoints: this enhances the accuracy level, and lets the system recover 3D information, leading to a target representation which is more similar to the one obtained using 3D sensors. Such similarity is a first step to achieve a stronger cooperation between robots and camera networks, a capability that opens new scenarios in robotics.
