Multi-agent system for the operation of an integrated microgrid

Operation of modern power system has become a complex problem, as its focus has shifted to implementing smart grid techniques and integrating distributed renewable energy sources. Integrated microgrid is an innovative control and management architecture at distribution network level, where several microgrids are electrically interconnected with each other. This paper presents a multi-agent system (MAS) for the operation of an integrated microgrid. A hierarchical control scheme is used for maximizing the power production output of local distributed generators, and optimizing power exchanges among the microgrids as well as power exchange between the main distribution system and the integrated microgrid. This scheme was implemented on the multi-agent system. Simulation studies carried out on the developed system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-agent system for the operation of an integrated microgrid. Design and implementation of an OLE for process control unified architecture aggregating server for a group of flexible manufacturing systems

The article focuses on the development of an OPC UA (object linking and embedding (OLE) for process control unified architecture) server. One of the major concerns regarding this new specification is the migration from the old component object model (COM) to the new UA specification. From the various migration strategies described in this article, the authors' server represents a special adapter software solution which aggregates several COM servers, one for each flexible manufacturing system (FMS) modelled in the address space of the UA server. The article focuses on the advantages introduced by the new specification like the unified modelling capability and the extensible meta model. The address space is exemplified by means of a screw fitting station, which is part of the flexible line, on which the UA server has been tested. From the four generally accepted use cases, the server implements the first two: observation and control. They are mainly supported through the variables and the methods of the address space. During the testing phase, the minimum sampling interval regarding the communication with the underlying COM servers has been determined for a different number of FMSs. As a result the special adapter software solution is a fast but also a well-performing approach, which works well even in very complex environments.

Online estimation of system parameters for artificial intelligence applications to load frequency control

Making balance between generation and demand is the operating principle of the load frequency control. As the automatic generation control (AGC) has been commissioned to serve load-generation balance for several decades, the developmental roadmap of the AGC is leading to the adaptive or artificial intelligence (AI) applications to the controller design. Among the AI applications, the genetic algorithm (GA) and the fuzzy inference system (FIS) are often adopted to optimise AGC gains under the time-varying system conditions. Relevant studies indicate that the real-time acquisition of system states would be advantageous for AGC to drive system to the optimal condition. However, some of the system parameters are not easily accessible. The object of getting good estimate of system parameters in real-time basis would definitely enhance the performance of the intelligence applications to AGC. This study explores the use of recursive least square algorithm for acquiring the system parameters in real time. As such, a more accurate reference model would be gainfully used in the AI controller design. Issues related to the model validation in the simulation and field test are presented. Following that, the use of the reference model in the GA as well as the FIS applications for the optimal gain scheduling of the AGC is demonstrated.

Realisation of a bilaterally teleoperated robotic vehicle platform with passivity control

In this study, a new bilateral teleoperated vehicle testing platform is proposed. In the platform, the authors apply a new power-based time domain passivity control (PTDPC) method in an effort to improve the transparency. A new bilateral teleoperation platform is realised where steering angle commands were transmitted from a steering wheel interface to a remote vehicle, and road surface forces are sent back from the vehicle to the steering wheel interface. The communication channel between the steering wheel (master side) and the remote vehicle (slave side) introduces time-varying delays in the transmitted signals. To ensure the stability of the whole system, PTDPCs are applied to each side of the communication channel, which further improve the tracking performance as well as reduce the overall effort required of the human operator. The alternative advantage of the passivity control is the simplicity: the dynamic models of both master and slave side systems are not required to be known. The algorithms, hardware and software realisations are described thoroughly in the study. Finally, experimental results are demonstrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach as well as the functionality of the new testing platform.

In this paper, we introduce a test bed for demonstrating and investigating self-x properties, such as self-optimization and self-organization, within the scope of multi-robot societies under realistic conditions. By doing so, we shift the investigation and demonstration of biologically inspired mechanisms from the simulative point of view to a dynamic and more complex realistic environment. For this purpose, we developed a controlled real-world environment to overcome common problems such as self-localization. Furthermore, we elaborated a concept for a descriptive robotic real-world game. By means of this game, we provide an instrument, which is easily accessible for any kind of audience on the one hand, while it still leaves enough space for an extensive scientific investigation on the other hand.

This paper presents the application of machine learning strategy namely SVM and GA for process modeling and optimization of Batch reactor. Batch reactor is an essential unit operation in almost all batch-processing industries like chemical and pharmaceuticals etc. The dynamic optimization of batch reactor has received major attention always, so that an increase in the yield may be obtained by using the optimal temperature profiles. The optimal reactor temperature profiles are obtained by solving optimal control problems off-line. In this approach, the temperature profile of the batch reactor is optimized using Genetic Algorithm (GA) with a view to maximize the desired product and minimize the waste product as a multi -objective function. Here Generic Model control is implemented by using SVM Estimator and it includes the nonlinear model of a process to determine the control action. SVM model will act as a estimator will predict the current value of the heat release makes the control performance to be more robust. The major advantage of the strategies is that modeling and optimization can be conducted exclusively from the historic process data wherein the detailed knowledge of process phenomenology (reaction mechanism, kinetics, etc) is not required. The robustness performance of proposed optimal controller has been experienced.

An integration procedure is essential for the development of modern industry allowing the improvement of manufacturing process. This paper describes the implementation of a workcell integration procedure for a recovered robot manipulator with the development of multiple tasks programming. The adopted methodology is based on the definition of a control architecture incorporating a supervision system. The interoperability between this system and the controller devices is guaranteed by using wireless communication network. This methodology was applied to the manufactured of automotive compressors and has lead to improved manufacturing parameters.

control applications are continuously growing in complexity due to the inclusion of new functionalities and services, which demand increasing the semantic of design elements. This sounds familiar to software engineers, who have already walked that road. Design patterns are one of the techniques they have commonly used to leverage their design semantics, considering them as reusable "trusted solutions to common problems". Under that spirit, one specific design pattern is presented, that gives a generic approach to preventive maintenance issues, a common topic in most control applications. This pattern is described by means of extended Function Blocks (FBs with added semantic artifacts), middleware services and the description of their coordinated behavior. As a case study, this pattern is used in the design of a glass cutting machine tool.

In this paper we consider mesh based P2P streaming systems focusing on the problem of regulating peer upload rate to match the system demand while not overloading each peer upload link capacity. We propose Hose Rate control (HRC), a novel scheme to control the speed at which peers offer chunks to other peers, ultimately controlling peer uplink capacity utilization. This is of critical importance for heterogeneous scenarios like the one faced in the Internet, where peer upload capacity is unknown and varies widely. HRC nicely adapts to the actual peer available upload bandwidth and system demand, so that users' Quality of Experience is greatly enhanced. Both simulations and actual experiments involving up to 1000 peers are presented to assess performance in real scenarios. Results show that HRC consistently outperforms the Quality of Experience achieved by non-adaptive schemes.
