In this study, OPNET simulations are run to study the performance of a single Gigabit Ethernet two-wagon train control network. The network carries both control and entertainment loads. Each wagon has two servers;a controller to carry the control load and an Entertainment Server to carry the entertainment load. A passive supervisor is interconnected to both wagons. A fault tolerance analysis is presented;it is based on a specific reallocation of the control load. It is proven that the network can survive the failure of both controllers and both Entertainment Servers. OPNET simulations indicated that the maximum real-time sensor-to-actuator packet end-to-end delay met its constraints and that there were zero packets dropped.

Using visual tracking technology by CCD sensor instead of high speed computational resources to measure the fast dynamic systems is not easy. This paper proposes a simple and effective method to do the image processing, catching this dynamic movement in real-time and controlling the overhead crane. Visual tracking based on color histograms will compare the color in a model image with the color in image sequences to track the dynamic object. Once it tracked, the sensing data will be sent to the adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller (AFSMC) to control the overhead cranes. The merits of it include the robustness and model free properties of the sliding mode and fuzzy logic controllers;adaptable slopes of the sliding surface are also presented to enhance the control results.

The granularity of "action" within a system is highly depending on the internal representation for the task, or intention of what to do if it is a biological system. In the same time, there are several levels of adaptation when the system tries to complete a mission. The problem of choosing the right level of action representation is essential for robot controls as well as in learning paradigms. Both tend to use low-granularity and transfer the processed information to upper levels constructively. However the system never guarantees the completion time of the mission if the system is composed of stiff functional blocks with a specific temporal granularity at the bottom level. However, we biological system have an ability to manage the global time for scheduling and reorganization of tasks to finish by the deadline. Brain-inspired robotics allows us to investigate a distributed parallel information system, the brain, with the ability of time management as a real time control system of the physical body through flexible planning of necessary actions by interacting with the real environment. It is an extension of subsumption approaches that fixed a set of behaviors as the basic unit of action in the viewpoint of temporal property. By focusing on the temporal granularity as a consequence of coordination among multiple levels, a self-confident robot control may arise from a coupling between top-down or purpose-oriented decomposition of the purpose to primitive functions with flexible time windows and bottom-up of sensori-motor reactions in dynamic environments.

This practice paper examines Toyota's electronic throttle controller (ETC) problem. ETC for passenger cars is a safety-critical, embedded control system and it must meet very high reliability and safety requirements. ETC systems continue to increase in complexity, making formal specification and verification processes an essential component of the development of safer systems. There are two ways to represent the real-time system. Firstly, we can describe the system's structure and function by detailing its electrical, mechanical, and other components. Secondly, the real-time system's behavior as it responds to actions and events can be described. Then we can compare the system's specification to the safety assertion to show that the system meets the safety properties. This paper describes two research threads. In the first, we present the specification of Toyota's electronic throttle control (ETC) system including the timing constraints. The second thread, which will be explored in a longer version of this paper, evaluates the use of conventional design versus electronic engine control by applying classical control theory.

The current LANSCE LLRF system is an analog PI Feedback control system which achieves amplitude and phase error of 1% and 1 degree respectively. The feedback system receives cavity amplitude and phase, crosstalk between the amplitude and phase paths is significant. We propose an In-phase (I) and Quadrature (Q) based feedback control system which easily decouples the crosstalk of the I and Q channels. A PI feedback controller is implemented with an Altera Stratix III FPGA. The control system is modeled with DSP Builder which automatically generates HDL. Altera SOPC Builder is used for the hardware integration of the DSP Builder model, memories, peripherals, and 32 bit NIOS II embedded processor. The NIOS II processor communicates with the host computer via Ethernet, uploads data, computes parameters, and downloads parameters. The network support of the design makes it possible to set and tune the control system parameters on-line and to conduct the calibration of the whole RF system easily. The proposed control system is successfully tested with a LANSCE sided-coupled linear accelerator at 720kw.

This paper presents two new function block types for the IEC 61499 compliant 4DIAC runtime (FORTE). The function blocks are created in an attempt to increase the possibilities of reconfiguring function block applications during operation, without having to recreate the function block networks or recompile the FORTE runtime. The first block-type is created for generic I/O, and demonstrates how a single, platform-independent function block can be used to access the I/O subsystems of multiple PLC platforms. The second block-type allows the functionality of a block to be completely specified in the Lua scripting language, and thereby to be changed at runtime. Both block-types have been successfully tested, and appear to be a usable step in creating a more dynamic and flexible IEC 61499 implementation.

We present a case-study analysing the prosodic contours and salient word markers of a small corpus of robot-directed speech where the human participants had been asked to talk to a socially interactive robot as if it were a child. We assess whether such contours and salience characteristics could be used to extract relevant information for the subsequent learning and scaffolding of meaning in robots. The study uses measures of pitch, energy and word duration from the participants speech and exploits Pierrehumbert and Hirschberg's theory of the meaning of intonational contours which may provide information on shared belief between speaker and listener. The results indicate that 1) participants use a high number of contours which provide new information markers to the robot, 2) that prosodic question contours reduce as the interactions proceed and 3) that pitch, energy and duration features can provide strong markers for relevant words and 4) there was little evidence that participants altered their prosodic contours in recognition of shared belief. A description and verification of our software which allows the semi-automatic marking of prosodic phrases is also described.

Industrial systems monitor and control is, in the majority of the cases, implemented using real-time acquisition systems. Since the real-world is analog, there is a growing demand for faster, high resolution, real-time and reliable acquisition systems at very low cost. This paper presents an embedded system designed to tackle the previously listed requirements, thus being able to be used in most of today's industrial systems requiring real-time data acquisition. The prototype developed, requires the co-design of hardware and software, the main difference and the main advantage offered is the added features and functionalities offered by the hardware platform used, such as USB connection (with the required real-time throughput), mass storage capability, database support and Ethernet connection. These features are supported by a Linux OS (uClinux). The embedded system developed is capable of acquiring eight analog channels simultaneously at 250kps for each channel with a 16-bit resolution, taking full advantage of the analog to digital converter (MAX11046). In order to do so several tailored drivers were programmed and added to the Linux kernel. Such a system can be used in many applications requiring real-time acquisition systems (medical, automotive, space exploration, etc).

Traffic signal controllers and route guidance systems are two major subsystems of Intelligent Transportation Systems that influence each other directly. Due to correlation between these subsystems, some research has been done to combine them into an integrated system. In this paper, PersianGulf - an autonomous combined traffic signal controller and route guidance system - will be proposed which has two unique features as compared to similar research. First, it is totally distributed because calculation of optimal routes are done independently in traffic signal controllers of intersections and second, it is totally autonomous because there is no need to communicate/cooperate with either traffic supervisors such as traffic management centers or the vehicles/drivers. Also, Simulation results show that PersianGulf improve the average speed of vehicles significantly in the simulated scenarios.

Some building energy codes now require the incorporation of daylight into buildings and automatic photosensor-controlled switching or dimming of the electric lighting system in areas that receive daylight. This paper describes enhancements to the open-source Daysim daylight analysis software that permit users to model a photosensor control system as it will perform in a real space, considering the directional sensitivity of the photosensor, its mounting position, the space and daylight aperture geometry, window shading configuration;the electric lighting equipment and control zones;exterior obstructions;and site weather conditions. System output includes assessment of the daylight distribution in a space throughout the year, the photosensor's ability to properly track the daylight and modify electric lighting system output, and the energy savings provided by the modeled control system. The application of daylight coefficients permits annual simulations to be conducted efficiently using hourly or finer weather data time increments.
