In the last decades, there is a lot of discussion about climate change and energy shortage. In building industry great amounts of energy are spent for heating and cooling which in return produce large quantities of CO 2 emissions. Therefore, it is self-understandable that efforts towards more effective and sustainable solutions have to be made. This thesis deals with Thermally Activated Building Systems (TABS), which refer to tem- perature - controlled surfaces that heat and cool indoor temperatures by adding or removing sensible heat and where more than half of heat transfer occurs through thermal radiation. Aim of this research is to describe, analyze and evaluate the performance of this system with the help of Building Energy Modelling Programs (BEMPs). This report consists of two main parts. TABS are modelled with the help of Building Energy Modelling Programs (BEMPs) and specifically EnergyPlus and TRNSYS. The first part of the report is focused on comparisons of the results between EnergyPlus and TRNSYS. Several models have been tested in the two programs, initially simple growing progressively more complicated to determine the accuracy of the results in several cases. In the final step, models equipped with TABS are designed in EnergyPlus and TRNSYS and their results, regarding inside temperature, are compared. The study has shown that EnergyPlus and TRNSYS lead to significantly different results for building simulations under the given conditions. Additionally, possible causes of these differences have been found in the modelling processes of the programs. In the second part of the thesis a combination of two radiant systems for heating and cooling is introduced as shown in the figure below. The first system is concrete core activation (CCA), meaning that heating and cooling is provided by means of circulating water running in tubes embedded in the floor slabs. Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) and transport simulators have been widely utilized to optimise traffic signal timings with multiple objectives. However, traffic simulations require much processing time and need to be called repeatedly in iterations of MOEAs. As a result, traffic signal timing optimisation process is time-consuming. Anytime behaviour of an algorithm indicates its ability to return as good solutions as possible at any time during its implementation. Therefore, anytime behavior is desirable in traffic signal timing optimisation algorithms. In this study, we propose an optimisation strategy (NSGA-II-LS) to improve anytime behaviour based on NSGA-II and local search. To evaluate the validity of the proposed algorithm, the NSGA-II-LS, NSGA-II and MODEA are used to optimize signal durations of an intersection in Andrea Costa scenario. Results of the experiment show that the optimization method proposed in this study has good anytime behaviour in the traffic signal timings optimization problem.

The railway world is undergoing major changes. The advent of new technologies allows us to rethink the train system and face new challenges, but one must not forget all the ecological constraints that are now accentuated by the increase in energy costs. This paper focuses on the optimization of the driver commands to limit the energy consumption of the trains under punctuality and security constraints. This problem falls within the framework of control optimization problems for nonlinear dynamic mechanical systems in the presence of constraints and uncertainties. A four-step approach is then proposed in this paper to solve this problem: (1) the introduction of simplified and fast-to-evaluate models to model the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the train and its energy consumption;(2) the identification in a Bayesian formalism of the parameters on which these models depend from on-track measurements on commercial trains;(3) the reformulation of the optimization problem so that it integrates the uncertainties related to an imperfect knowledge of these estimated parameters;(4) the resolution of the optimization problem using evolutionary algorithms. The main specificity of this work lies in the fact that not only the objective function to be minimized, here the energy consumed by the train, is impacted by the uncertainties, but also the admissibility constraints of the solution, here punctuality and operating safety. The integration of the uncertainties in the search for the control function is thus not trivial and requires several original adaptations in order to make the final optimization problem well posed.

Active control optimization for Minimizing the Dynamic Response of Functionally Graded Plate

A control optimization problem for functionally graded (FG) plates is presented using a first-order shear deformation plate theory including through-the-thickness normal strain effect. The aim of the optimization is to minimize the vibrational response of FG plate with constraints on the control energy used in the damping process. An active control optimization is presented to determine the optimal level of a closed loop control function. Plate thickness and a homogeneity parameter of FG plates are used as design variables. Numerical results for the optimal control force and the total energy for a simply supported FG plate are given. The influence of through-the-thickness normal strain effect on the accuracy of the obtained results is illustrated. The effectiveness of the present control and design procedure is examined.

Engine idle-speed system modelling and control optimization using artificial intelligence

This paper proposes a novel modelling and optimization approach for steady state and transient performance tune-up of an engine at idle speed. In terms of modelling, Latin hypercube sampling and multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) least-squares support vector machines (LS-SVMs) are proposed to build an engine idle-speed model based on experimental sample data. Then, a genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are applied to obtain an optimal electronic control unit setting automatically, under various user-defined constraints. All of the above techniques mentioned are artificial intelligence techniques. To illustrate the advantages of the MIMO LS-SVM, a traditional multilayer feedforward neural network (MFN) is also applied to build the engine idle-speed model. The modelling accuracies of the MIMO LS-SVM and MFN are also compared. This study shows that the predicted results using the estimated model from the LS-SVM are in good agreement with the actual test results. Moreover, both the GA and PSO optimization results show an impressive improvement on idle-speed performance in a test engine. The optimization results also indicate that PSO is more efficient than the GA in an idle-speed control optimization problem based on the LS-SVM model. As the proposed methodology is generic, it can be applied to different engine modelling and control optimization problems.

Thermal performance assessment and control optimization of a solar-driven seasonal sorption storage system for residential application

The present paper analyzed the thermal performance and control optimization of a solar system based on seasonal sorption storage for domestic applications. The system control, which could choose between 41 operational modes, was optimized based on operational costs and maximization of sorption system use. The system was composed by 17.5 m2 of evacuated tube collectors, 3.6 m3 of composite sorbents based on lithium chloride and a stratified water tank. High efficiency of a sorption storage system was obtained when continuous charges or discharges occur, which, in this study, depended on weather conditions (ambient temperature and solar irradiation). The operational economic benefits were maximized using a sorption system with 9% less capacity and, therefore, less storage volume. The sorption thermal energy storage system obtained energy densities of 90 and 106 kWh/m3. The whole system could supply 35% of the total thermal demand of a single family house in Nuremberg. The study concluded that the control optimization of a seasonal sorption system is a key factor to make the technology competitive, define its optimal size and, therefore, maximize its energy density in further designs.

Cooling System Energy Consumption Reduction through a Novel All-Electric Powertrain Traction Module and control optimization

In this work, the problem of reducing the energy consumption of the cooling circuit for the propulsion system of an all-electric vehicle is approached with two different concepts: improvement of the powertrain efficiency and optimization of the control strategy. Improvement of the powertrain efficiency is obtained through a modular design, which consists of replacing the electric powertrain with several smaller traction modules whose powers sum up to the total power of the original powertrain. In this paper, it is shown how modularity, among other benefits, also allows reducing the energy consumption of the cooling system up to 54%. The energy consumption of the cooling system is associated with two components: the pump and the fan. They produce a so-called auxiliary load on the battery, reducing the maximum range of the vehicle. In conventional cooling systems, the pump and the fan are controlled with a thermostat, without taking into account the energy consumption. Conversely, in this work a control strategy to reduce the auxiliary loads is developed and compared with the conventional approach, showing that the energy consumption of the cooling system can be reduced up to 27%. To test the control strategy, numerical simulations have been carried out with a 1-D model of the cooling system. On the other hand, all the thermal loads of the components have been calculated with a vehicle simulator, which is able to predict the vehicle's behavior under different driving cycles.

A Data-driven Online Identification and control optimization Approach applied to a Hybrid Electric Powertrain System

Abstract Within this contribution the optimization of the electric current flow control within a hybrid electric powertrain system and hence its power and energy management strategy is introduced. This contribution describes the control optimization . Power and energy management are methods applied to hybrid electric powertrain systems to be used in modern vehicles. Hereby the electric current flow within the powertrain, i.e. between its system components, is controlled regarding predefined control objectives such as the power or energy availability with respect to a load profile. In this contribution an online-applicable optimization method of the power and energy management strategy is introduced. Its realization contains a system identification algorithm capable of being implemented within online applications and, based on this, a suitable control optimization including a predictive approach. The control objectives to be optimized in this context are the energy consumption, the power availability, and deterioration aspects of the system and its components. The algorithm is demonstrated using the example of a fuel cell/supercap-based hybrid electric powertrain system. After a brief description of the system and operation details, the results of the identification process in relation to the real behavior as well as the optimization algorithm are presented. Applying typical driving cycles to this system it can be shown that a significant improvement of this approach compared with classical power and energy methods can be achived. The main scientific and practical question remains: what can be assumed about the future behavior of the workload (applied to the system) and how can the control be optimized for the unknown future behavior. Mathematically expressed: How exact the system behavior has to be identified (from the last measurements) in relation to the principally unknown character of the upcoming future load in relations to the different optimization goals.

Subzone control optimization of air distribution for thermal comfort and energy efficiency under cooling load uncertainty

The previous subzone control method of air distribution divides the occupied zone into subzones and controls the thermal conditions of the subzones to satisfy the respective thermal preferences. The previous method improves thermal comfort efficiently by considering the non-uniform thermal environment and differentiated thermal preferences of the occupants. However, firstly it is unable to account energy efficiency;and secondly, it fails to treat cooling load uncertainty. Cooling load uncertainty exists prevailingly in practice and could significantly deteriorate the performance of air distribution. This study proposes a subzone control optimization to simultaneously improve thermal comfort and energy efficiency under cooling load uncertainty. Using Monte Carlo simulations, the thermal deviation of the thermal conditions of the subzones from the respective thermal preferences and energy efficiency indicated by heat removal efficiencies of the subzones are quantified with a confidence level of 0.95 under cooling load uncertainty. Overall performance is maximized by making a trade-off between minimizing the thermal deviation for thermal comfort and maximizing the energy efficiency using the multi-criteria decision-making technique. Results of case studies based on experiments of stratum ventilation show that increasing the uncertainty level in cooling load deteriorates thermal comfort and energy efficiency. The thermal comfort is more sensitive to the cooling load uncertainty than energy efficiency. Under thirty-six scenarios with different uncertainty levels of cooling load, thermal preferences of the subzones and weighting factors of thermal comfort and energy efficiency, the new method improves the overall performance by 75% on average compared with the previous method.

Computationally Efficient Combined Design and control optimization using a Coupling Measure

This paper presents a novel approach to the optimization of a dynamic system's design and control. Traditionally, these problems have been solved either sequentially or in a combined manner. We propose a novel approach that uses a previously-derived coupling measure to quantify the impact of plant design variables on optimal control cost. This proposed approach has two key advantages. First, because the coupling term quantifies the gradient of the control optimization objective with respect to plant design variables, the approach ensures combined plant/control optimality. Second, because the coupling term equals the integral of optimal control co-states multiplied by static gradient terms that can be computed a priori , the proposed approach is computationally attractive. We illustrate this approach using an example cantilever beam structural design and vibration control problem. The results show significant computational cost improvements compared to traditional combined plant/control optimization. This reduction in computational cost becomes more pronounced as the number of plant design variables increases.
