Efficacy of moxidectin injectable and pour-on formulations in a pilot control program against bovine hypodermosis in Southern Italy

Bovine hypodermosis is a myiasis caused by Hypoderma bovis and Hypoderma lineatum (Diptera, Oestridae) larvae, which has a severe economic impact on the livestock industry. Though myiasis is widespread throughout Italy, no nationwide eradication program has ever been planned, unlike in other European Countries. With a view to setting up a national control program, a pilot study was carried out in Southern Italy on 9939 cattle bred in an area with a, high prevalence of cattle hypodermosis, using moxidectin 0.5% pour-on (Cydectin((R)), Fort Dodge) and 1% injectable (Cydectin((R)), Fort Dodge) formulations. At the recommended dosage, moxidectin displayed efficacy levels of 99.9% in the pour-on and 100% in the injectable formulation, whereas the microdose (1 mg per head regardless of body weight) was less effective (65.7%). This trial contributed to a significant reduction in infestation rates in the study area and represented the first step through which a national program for eradicating warble fly infestation in Italy. EXPERIENCE OF A 10-YEAR USE OF COMPETITIVE-EXCLUSION TREATMENT AS PART OF THE SALMONELLA control program IN SWEDEN

In Sweden, competitive exclusion (CE) treatment has been used since 1981 as a part of the national control programme for Salmonella. According to the programme all broiler flocks are tested for Salmonella before slaughter thus providing an evaluation of CE treatment. The CE culture used is mainly for the two consecutive flocks raised in a unit after a Salmonella-infected flock has been identified. During the period 1981-1990 CE culture has been given to 179 flocks, involving 3.82 million chickens. Only one of the treated flocks was found to be Salmonella-positive. A special study during a period when Salmonella was spread by contaminated feed demonstrated that CE treatment was effective in controlling Salmonella under field conditions. A likely contributory factor is that the hatcheries in Sweden can be claimed to be Salmonella-free. In addition, the control programme and related action, have led to a very low incidence of Salmonella in broiler chickens. A nationwide study carried out in 1990 demonstrated that less than 1% of broiler chickens was contaminated with Salmonella after slaughter.

Impact of a non-compulsory antibiotic control program (PACTA):: Cost reductions and decreases in some nosocomial infections

BACKGROUND. Antibiotics account for 30% of hospital pharmacy expenses. More than 50% of the prescriptions are considered inappropriate;hence, programs devoted to optimizing the prescription of antibiotics should be developed. We present the results of a non-compulsory program for the assessment and control of antibiotic treatment in the University Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid. METHODS. The program was applied in the hospitalization units of six medical and surgical departments. Treatments in all patients were checked daily and recommendations were made in writing, according to previously established criteria. The program was used for 12 months and the results were compared with those of the previous 12 months. RESULTS. 1,280 treatments were reviewed and 524 recommendations were made (80% of them were accepted). There was a 13.82% reduction in the number of defined daily doses of antibiotics/100 inpatient-days. Antibiotic expenditure decreased by 65,352 euros (5,446 euros/month), implying a reduction of 1.21 euros/hospitalization-bed/day. There were no statistically significant differences in length of hospital stay or mortality between the two periods. A reduction in the incidence of Clostridium difficile diarrhea (p < 0.0001) and Candida spp. isolations (p < 0.05) was observed. CONCLUSIONS. Following application of a non-compulsory control program, antibiotic prescription improved and expenditure decreased, with no change in length of hospital stay or mortality. There was a reduction in the incidence of some nosocomial infections. Acceptation of the program by the physicians of the departments implicated was favorable.

PPR is an economically important trans-boundary disease of sheep and goats. Nepal had experienced several episodes of PPR outbreaks in the past. Although severity and frequency of outbreaks have decreased due to strenuous effort of Government of Nepal, it has been rather endemic. National PPR control program 2001, and PPR control program Implementation Working Guidelines, 2013, the legal documents guiding PPR control activities, have not been effective as expected due to multifactorial reasons. Thus, a critical analysis of the program with emphasis on impeding factors is must. In this review, we attempted to analyse and suggest more effective strategies considering geopolitical, social and cultural context of Nepal. © 2020, Indian Virological Society.

in spite of the great achievements gained in the national schistosomiasis control program during the last 5 decades, serious challenges for the control program exist due to the impact of biological factors, environmental facts and limitation of scientific technology, as well as shortages of socio-economic development in the endemic areas. This paper reviewed the experiences of the national control program, then the author considered it essential to put forward a newly sustainable strategy with an emphasis on the areas with high endemicity of schistosomiasis, on poverty-stricken areas, especially in the Western part of the People's Republic of China. when taking into account both the opportunities and challenges of the future. It is expected that the schistosomiasis control program with a sustainable strategy would promote local economic development in the People's Republic of China. Development of a Mycoplasma Mastitis control program in Louisiana

This report describes the development and implementation of a statewide mycoplasma mastitis control program for Louisiana. Mycoplasma mastitis is a unique form of mastitis caused by several species of the genus Mycoplasma. The highly contagious nature of these infections coupled with difficulties in diagnosis and therapy often contributes to catastrophic herd outbreaks resulting in severe economic loss. Mycoplasma mastitis was first detected in Louisiana in September 2002. As a result of this initial outbreak and because of the potential for serious economic loss associated with this type of mastitis, all dairy farms in the state were screened for mycoplasma mastitis. This screening identified an additional 12 dairy farms (2.8%) as having Mycoplasma species in bulk tank milk. The statewide survey prompted a rapid and unique response from several diverse groups within the state to address the problem. As a result of these meetings, a program was designed with input from all groups involved to combat this threat. Monthly bulk milk analysis revealed Mycoplasma species in at least 1 bulk tank for 12 of the 20 mo tested. Twenty-four bulk milk samples were positive for myco-plasma over the course of the monthly portion of the program. In 2006 the program shifted to a quarterly sampling of bulk tanks. Results from 545 bulk tanks cultured revealed 3 bulk tanks positive for Mycoplasma species (0.05%) during 2006. The implementation of an education, monitoring, and control program combining monthly bulk tank culture with restrictions on sale of cattle from confirmed positive herds has reduced the incidence of this type of mastitis in Louisiana and heightened awareness and adoption of control measures. © 2008 American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists.
