Backgroundcontrol strategies against contagious agalactia (CA), considered one of the most important diseases affecting small ruminants in countries surrounding the Mediterranean, are mainly based on traditional strategies considered suboptimal such as the use of inactivated vaccines and antibiotics. This manuscript analysed the efficacy of an alternative non-mandatory official control programme based on a multi-platform diagnostic panel and biosecurity developed and started in 185 herds placed in a contagious agalactia endemic area of Spain, using the data of 74,080 samples collected and analysed during a 4 years-period (2018-2021).ResultsGlobally, the combined analyses of bulk tank milk (BTM), ear or nasal swabs (in goats or sheep, respectively) and the serology to detect Mycoplasma agalactiae (Ma), allowed the detection of 40.54% of positive farms (n = 75), with Ma the species always detected in sheep (100%) and Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri (Mmc, 68,8%), Ma (29,3%) or both of them (1,9%) in goats. Taking into account productive aptitude and vaccination against CA, the use of BTM, ear or nasal swabs, and serology for herd classification demonstrated either a lack of concordance or only weak concordance. In herds that did not vaccinate, the classification of positives by male serology or swab detection showed moderate concordance. Vaccination against AC proved to be a protective factor against the occurrence of herds with bucks or rams testing *** the different diagnostic techniques are not interchangeable, it is necessary to apply a multi-platform diagnostic panel for the accurate classification of herds. Based on official classification, strict biosecurity standards, including the prohibition of the entry of animals with unknown health status, allowed the completion of the CA control program.

A multi-sectoral, non -governmental program for control of rheumatic heart disease: SUR I CAAN: A model for developing countries

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a leading cause of cardiovascular mortality in developing countries. control of RHD requires addressing the disease at its different stages through health system variables that are complex and intersecting. To achieve that, a multi-sectoral program is needed that is best implemented through ministries of health. In this report we present the SUR I CAAN program (Surveillance, Integration, Communication, Awareness, Advocacy and Training) that is implemented in Sudan utilizing nongovernmental resources and nonconventional funding. The program objectives are: 1. To improve primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of RHD, 2. To improve public awareness, 3. To implement strategic research projects, and 4. To improve advocacy through collaboration with regional and international organizations dealing with RHD. We established a hospital-based register and managed to identify high burden areas where sentinel sites for RHD control were established. A package of training and awareness material was utilized to conduct training workshops in these areas. Handheld echocardiography was utilized for studying the prevalence as well as for early detection and treatment of RHD. Although we did not conduct a structured evaluation for this program, we believe that its structure can serve as a model for other resource-limited countries.

Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), caused by Bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), is a disease of cattle responsible for significant economic losses worldwide. IBR is under certain communitarian regulations. Every member state can approve its own national IBR control program for the entire territory - or part of it - and can demand additional guarantees for bovids destined to its territory;therefore, every member state can be officially declared as entirely or partly IBR-free. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of IBR control and eradication programs in European countries. BoHV-1 control schemes were first introduced in the late 1970s, mainly in Northern and Central Europe. Depending on the seroprevalence rate, control strategies rely on identification and removal of seropositive animals or the use of glycoprotein E (gE)-deleted marker vaccines in infected herds. The implementation of a novel law for disease eradication at the EU level and of a European IBR data flow could make the goal of IBR eradication in all European countries easier to achieve.

Evaluation of mass drug administration in the program to control imported lymphatic filariasis in Thailand

Background: Migration plays a major role in the emergence and resurgence of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in many countries. Because of the high prevalence of Imported Bancroftian Filariasis (IBF) caused by nocturnally periodic Wuchereria bancrofti and the intensive movement of immigrant workers from endemic areas, Thailand has implemented two doses of 6 mg/kg diethylcarbamazine (DEC) with interval of 6 months to prevent IBF. In areas where immigrants are very mobile, the administration of DEC may be compromised. This study aimed to evaluate DEC administration and its barriers in such areas. Methods: A cross-sectional study with two-stage stratified cluster sampling was conducted. We selected Myanmar immigrants aged > 18 years from factory and fishery areas of Samut Sakhon Province for interview with a structured questionnaire. We also interviewed health personnel regarding the functions of the LF program and practice of DEC delivery among immigrants. Associations were measured by multiple logistic regression, at P < 0.05. Results: DEC coverage among the immigrants was 75 %, below the national target. All had received DEC only once during health examinations at general hospitals for work permit renewals. None of the health centers in each community provided DEC. Significant barriers to DEC access included being undocumented (adjusted OR = 74.23;95 % CI = 26.32-209.34), unemployed (adjusted OR = 5.09;95 % CI = 3.39-7.64), daily employed (adjusted OR = 4.33;95 % CI = 2.91-6.46), short-term immigrant (adjusted OR = 1.62;95 % CI = 1.04-2.52) and living in a fishery area (adjusted OR = 1.57;95 % CI = 1.04-2.52). Incorrect perceptions about the side-effects of DEC also obstructed DEC access for Myanmar immigrants. All positive LF antigenic immigrants reported visiting and emigrating from LF-endemic areas. Proposed in this paper is a modelling formalism, called the FMS control model, which is able to provide a detailed guideline for the implementation of the FMS control program (PLC program). Although, there are numerous simulation models for FMSs describing the system dynamics at the level of discrete event simulation, they cannot be fully utilised for the generation of a real control program involving sensors and actuators. Due to this, PLC programs for FMSs are usually done by the repetitive method of code writing, testing, and debugging until the control objectives are achieved. This is an error-prone and time-consuming task. The proposed FMS control model is described at the level of sensors and actuators. It can support the PLC program generation from the model. Since the FMS control model has been developed by expanding the DEVS formalism, it has a well-defined formalism. The proposed methodology has been implemented and test runs were made.

Re-creation of the marshes that used to exist in the Lake Okeechobee watershed may be the key to the prevention of further eutrophication of this Florida [USA] lake. This paper presents a review of the information available on water quality characteristics of this lake and characteristics of its watershed and an evaluation of the potential impact of this management alternative on Lake Okeechobee''s eutrophication-related water quality. The construction of the proposed wetlands may have limited impact on eutrophication-related water quality of the lake.

For endemic infections in cattle that are not regulated at the European Union level, such as bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), European Member States have implemented control or eradication programs (CEP) tailored to their specific situations. Different methods are used to assign infection-free status in CEP;therefore, the confidence of freedom associated with the "free" status generated by different CEP are difficult to compare, creating problems for the safe trade of cattle between territories. Safe trade would be facilitated with an output-based framework that enables a transparent and standardized comparison of confidence of freedom for CEP across herds, regions, or countries. The current paper represents the first step toward development of such a framework by seeking to describe and qualitatively compare elements of CEP that contribute to confidence of freedom. For this work, BVDV was used as a case study. We qualitatively compared heterogeneous BVDV CEP in 6 European countries: Germany, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Scotland. Information about BVDV CEP that were in place in 2017 and factors influencing the risk of introduction and transmission of BVDV (the context) were collected using an existing tool, with modifications to collect information about aspects of control and context. For the 6 participating countries, we ranked all individual elements of the CEP and their contexts that could influence the probability that cattle from a herd categorized as BVDV-free are truly free from infection. Many differences in the context and design of BVDV CEP were found. As examples, CEP were either mandatory or voluntary, resulting in variation in risks from neighboring herds, and risk factors such as cattle density and the number of imported cattle varied greatly between territories. Verifying digital control programs for a complicated power electronic system is usually time consuming. In this paper, a circuit simulation method to verify digital control programs is investigated. This method uses the C block provided by PSIM to integrate digital control program code into the circuit simulation environment. A program module packaging technique is first exploited to guarantee the program code sharing between the circuit simulation and the practical digital controller. Then a software clock is introduced in simulation to emulate the program execution timing sequence in a real digital controller. A simulation platform for UPS program code verification is established. The software code for a UPS rectifier is verified in both the simulation platform and a practical 50kVA UPS system. The high agreement between simulation and experimental results proves the validity of the investigated program verification method.
