Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control is widely applied in industries, though it is sometimes difficult to apply to nonlinear systems. In contrast, database-driven PID (DDPID) control has been proposed as a control method to adjust adaptive PID parameters. However, although this method can efficiently construct control systems with high control performance for nonlinear systems, its large computational cost in terms of computation time and memory consumption limits its application to relatively slow-response systems such as some process control systems. Therefore, in this paper, the cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) is introduced, and a new method to realize the database constructed by DD-PID with CMAC memory is proposed. Finally, numerical simulation examples are employed to quantitatively evaluate the reduction of computation time and memory usage, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method. The paper proposes an effective modeling and control procedure for the distributed-parameter systems using the echo-state network. The main idea is to reconstruct the spatio-temporal dynamics defined in a given multi-dimensional domain. In the investigated problem positions of both sensors and actuators are fixed allowing to delegate the complex system dynamics to echo-state network. Imposing a proper partitioning of the spatial domain, a specific topology of a neural network is used to form a reservoir capable to follow not only temporal but also spatial dynamics of the system. Based on available historical data, neural network model is initially trained and then used to derive the control law in the framework of iterative learning control. The echo-state network can be retrained after a particular control iterate in order to reduce model uncertainty and to fit it to the current operating conditions as much as possible. The performance of the proposed approach is tested and evaluated on the example of the squared clamped plate control. Copyright (c) 2023 The Authors.

Advanced control methods help to increase the efficiency of refrigerated applications, easing their economic and ecological burden. However, approaches from literature have rarely been validated experimentally. One significant reason is the high expenses when conducting control experiments on full-sized plants. Low-maintenance, low-cost testing facilities constitute a possible remedy. Therefore, this work proposes a test bed refrigeration unit based on Peltier elements, for which impedance control compensates the behavioral differences to an actual secondary loop refrigeration unit. The two-degree-of-freedom control architecture comprises a static feedforward and a PID path that is robustified by choosing a linear design model based on the.-gap metric. Experimental validation using a 260 min cycle shows that the achieved system trajectory lies within sensor accuracy to the desired one for more than 99% of the time, proving adequate emulation. Low-cost web-based Supervisory control and Data Acquisition system for a microgrid testbed: A case study in design and implementation for academic and research applications

This paper presents the design and implementation of a low-cost Supervisory control and Data Acquisition system based on a Web interface to be applied to a Hybrid Renewable Energy system (HRES) microgrid. This development will provide a reliable and low-cost control and data acquisition systems for the Renewable Energy Laboratory a Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (LabDER-UPV) in Spain, oriented to the research on microgrid stability and energy generation. The developed low-cost SCADA operates on a microgrid that incorporates a photovoltaic array, a wind turbine, a biomass gasification plant and a battery bank as an energy storage system. Sensors and power meters for electrical parameters, such as voltage, current, frequency, power factor, power generation, and energy consumption, were processed digitally and integrated into Arduino-based devices. A master device on a Raspberry-PI board was set up to send all this information to a local database (DB), and a MySQL Web-DB linked to a Web SCADA interface, programmed in HTML5. The communications protocols include TCP/IP, I2C, SPI, and Serial communication;Arduino-based slave devices communicate with the master Raspberry-PI using NRF24L01 wireless radio frequency transceivers. Finally, a comparison between a standard SCADA against the developed Web-based SCADA system is carried out. The results of the operative tests and the cost comparison of the own-designed developed Web-SCADA system prove its reliability and low-cost, on average an 86% cheaper than a standard brandmark solution, for controlling, monitoring and data logging information, as well as for local and remote operation system when applied to the HRES microgrid testbed.

The reduction of fatigue loadings in wind turbines to increase their lifetime has become of special interest from a control viewpoint. Individual Pitch control (IPC) is a well-known approach used to mainly mitigate periodic blade loads, and it is usually implemented with the assistance of the multi-blade coordinate (MBC) transformation, which transforms and decouples the measured blade load signals from a rotating frame into a non-rotating tilt-axis and yaw-axis. Nevertheless, these axes still show coupling between them in practical scenarios adversely affecting the system performance. Previous studies have demonstrated the benefits of including an extra tuning parameter in the MBC, the azimuth offset, in improving the performance achieved by the IPC. However, the tuning of this parameter and its real improvements that can be obtained compared to the IPC without this offset require more research. Here, two 1P+2P IPC, with and without additional azimuth offset, are designed and applied to the 5 MW reference turbine model developed by NREL using the FAST software as a simulation platform. The controller parameter tuning is formulated as an optimization problem that minimizes the blade fatigue load according to the Dirlik index and that is resolved through genetic algorithms. To fairly analyze the improvement entailed by the addition of the azimuth offset, both optimized IPC schemes, with and without azimuth offset, are compared qualitatively and quantitatively using a classical controller as the baseline case. From the simulation results, it can be stated that the optimal IPC scheme with azimuth offset compared with the IPC scheme without offset achieves improvements of around 11% in load reduction and pitch signal effort. In this paper, we derive the dynamics of a six degree of freedom platform using Lagrangian method. Lagrangian is a powerful tool for deriving the equations of motion of the mechanical systems. We first derive the Lagrangian of the 6-DoF(Degree of Freedom) platform and then use Euler-Lagrangian equation to derive the equations of motion for the platform. The derived equations are simulated and validated using computational tools, particularly Simscape. This validation facilitates comparison of predicted and simulated behaviour of the platform. Additionally, platform's response to various changes-such as change in mass, stiffness of the platform and others, its corresponding natural frequencies are examined. In future work, to improve the performance and operational stability, creating and implementing a control system for the 6 DoF platform will be done. This study gives understanding of dynamics of the platform and provides a groundwork for the advancement in control system design of such systems.

Nonlinear-Model-Inversion control for Stall-Flutter Suppression of an Airfoil via Camber Morphing

This paper presents a nonlinear-model-inversion control law to suppress stall flutter of an airfoil with active trailing-edge morphing. First, a nonlinear aeroelastic model is proposed utilizing two nonlinear autoregressive neural networks with exogenous inputs , which are used to predict aerodynamic moments on an airfoil due to large-amplitude oscillation and camber morphing, respectively. Afterward, a nonlinear-model-inversion control system is designed upon the mentioned aeroelastic system to suppress stall flutter via the camber morphing. A fluid-structure-control (FSC) coupling strategy is developed with structure and control systems embedded in the high-fidelity computational-fluid-dynamics environment to validate the control effect. The FSC high-fidelity simulations show that the nonlinear-model-inversion controller can suppress pitching oscillation completely, whereas a linear proportional-derivative controller without time delay only performs a limited suppression rate by 25.6%. The flowfield evolution result infers that the active camber morphing can generate a converse training-edge vortex, which counteracts the leading-edge vortex during stall flutter. From the perspective of an energy hysteresis, active camber morphing works well by converting injected aerodynamic energy from positive to negative.

The Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre (OAJ(+1)) in Spain is a young astronomical facility, conceived and developed from the beginning as a fully automated observatory with the main goal of optimizing the processes in the scientific and general operation of the Observatory. The OAJ has been particularly conceived for carrying out large sky surveys with two unprecedented telescopes of unusually large fields of view (FoV): the JST/T250, a 2.55m telescope of 3deg field of view, and the JAST/T80, an 83cm telescope of 2deg field of view. The most immediate objective of the two telescopes for the next years is carrying out two unique photometric surveys of several thousands square degrees, J-PAS(+2) and J-PLUS+3, each of them with a wide range of scientific applications, like e.g. large structure cosmology and Dark Energy, galaxy evolution, supernovae, Milky Way structure, exoplanets, among many others. To do that, JST and JAST are equipped with panoramic cameras under development within the J-PAS collaboration, JPCam and T80Cam respectively, which make use of large format (similar to 10k x 10k) CCDs covering the entire focal plane. This paper describes in detail, from operations point of view, a comparison between the detailed cost of the global automation of the Observatory and the standard automation cost for astronomical facilities, in reference to the total investment and highlighting all benefits obtained from this approach and difficulties encountered. The paper also describes the engineering development of the overall facilities and infrastructures for the fully automated observatory and a global overview of current status, pinpointing lessons learned in order to boost observatory operations performance, achieving scientific targets, maintaining quality requirements, but also minimizing operation cost and human resources.
