Low speed motion control experiments on a single point diamond turning machine using CMAC learning control algorithm

Diamond turning of brittle materials such as glass, ceramic, germanium, and zinc sulfide has been of considerable research interest in recent years due to applications in optics and precision engineering systems. When diamond turning brittle materials, material removal should be kept within the ductile regime to avoid subsurface damage (Evans, 1991;Nakasuji et al., 1990). It is generally accepted that ductile regime machining of brittle materials can be accomplished using extremely low depth of cut and feed rates. Furthermore, the tool positioning accuracy of the machine must be in the nanometer range to obtain optical quality machined parts with surface finish and profile accuracy on the order of 10 nm and 100 nm respectively (Nakasuji et al., 1990, Ueda et al., 1991). Nanometric level positioning accuracy of the machine tool axes is difficult particularly at low feed rates due to friction and backlash, Friction at extremely low feed rates is highly nonlinear due to the transition fi om stiction to Coulomb friction, and as such is very difficult to model. Standard proportional-integral-derivative (PID) type controllers are unable to deal with this large and erratic friction within the requirements of ultra precision machining. In order to compensate the effects of friction in the machine tool axes, a learning controller based on the Cerebellar Model Articulation controller (CMAC) neural network is studied for servo-control. The learning controller was implemented using "C" language on a DSP based controller for a single point diamond turning machine. The CMAC servo control algorithm improved the positioning accuracy of the single point diamond turning machine by a factor of 10 compared to the standard PID algorithm run on the same machine and control system hardware.

Multi-mode driving control of a parallel hybrid electric vehicle using driving pattern recognition

Vehicle performance such as fuel consumption and catalyst-out emissions is affected by a driving pattern, which is defined as a driving cycle with grades in this study. To optimize the vehicle performances on a temporary, driving pattern, we developed a multi-mode driving control algorithm using driving pattern recognition and applied it to a parallel hybrid electric vehicle (parallel HEV). The multi-mode driving control is defined as the control strategy which switches a current driving control algorithm to the algorithm optimized in a recognized driving pattern. For this purpose, first, we selected six representative driving patterns, which are composed of three urban driving patterns, one expressway driving pattern, and two suburban driving patterns. A total of 24 parameters such as average cycle velocity, positive acceleration kinetic energy, stop time/total time, average acceleration, and average grade are chosen to characterize the driving patterns. Second, in each representative driving pattern, control parameters of a parallel HEV are optimized by Taguchi method though the fuel-consumption and emissions simulations. And these results are compared with those by parametric study. There are seven control parameters, six of them are weighting factors of performance measures for deciding the ratio of engine power to required power from driving load. And the other is the charging/discharging method of battery. Finally, in driving, a neural network (the Hamming network) decides periodically which representative driving pattern is closest to a current driving pattern by comparing the correlation related to 24 characteristic parameters. And then the current driving control algorithm is switched to the optimal one, assuming the driving pattern does not change in the next period.

There is considerable interest in coordinated automotive engine/transmission control for smooth shifts, or for traction control of front wheel drive vehicles. Closed-loop control of the engine has been shown to be useful in improving shift quality. Because of the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the engine, the control method of sliding modes is well suited for engine control algorithms. The authors outline a dynamic engine model, and develop the sliding control laws to follow desired torque converter pump and turbine speed trajectories. The relationships between these desired trajectories and shift quality are also outlined.

Many automation tasks require human intervention and guidance. A control system architecture combining work units and master units by software interfaces is described. OSCAR(1) is incorporated as a universal transform service. It is regarding dynamic properties of work units. Implementing the transform at the master site eases integration of new robot types. The dynamic behaviour when crossing singular points is compared with a closed form standard transform. The control system has also been applied in medical manipulator systems. Energy management with improved frequency sharing based control for battery/ultracapacitor hybrid energy system in the presence of delay

Hybrid energy storage system (HESS) consists of different electrical storage devices with complementary characteristics to satisfy both the energy and power requirements of the load. This study presents an improved frequency sharing algorithm for battery/ultracapacitor (UC) HESS in the presence of delay. Time delay is inevitable with the digital implementation of control algorithms. Presence of delay deteriorates the transient response of the system by limiting the bandwidth of inner current loops. The DC-link voltage will settle only after settling of the slower loop, i.e. battery loop, hence the presence of delay will make the system response slower in conventional methods. However, the improved algorithm shares battery current loop error during transients with faster UC current loop and hence DC-link voltage settling becomes faster. Furthermore, for safe and efficient operation, an energy management algorithm (EMA) has been designed that ensures nominal UC voltage and other operational constraints as described in the study. To analyse the effect of UC voltage control loop on the operation of the DC-link voltage control loop during transients, UC voltage control loop with different bandwidths have been designed and tested. Microcontroller based implementation was done for experimental verification of the improved control algorithm and EMA.

NEAR-OPTIMAL control OF A BILINEAR, SOLAR-ASSISTED HEAT-PUMP SYSTEM

A system consisting of a flat-plate solar collector, two heat storage tanks, a heat pump, and all necessary minor components is considered. For each major component a bilinear mathematical model is developed. The system control problem is divided into steady-state and dynamic cases, and the optimal steady-state solution is found. Based on this result a suboptimal dynamic control algorithm is given and is shown to give locally stable and near optimal performance. Results of a simulation study, comparing seasonal performance of the suboptimal system with that of the conventionally-controlled system are given.

Time-delay sliding mode control for a servo

In this paper, a new control algorithm called the time-delay sliding mode control (TDSMC), based on the time delay control (TDC) and the integral sliding mode control (SMC), is proposed and applied for controlling DC servos with a seal installed on their rotating axes. This algorithm adopts the robustness of sliding model control and improves the robustness of the TDC. The results of a series of experiments on a DC servo motor system with stick-slip friction show TDSMC is compatable with the TDC in the nominal performance, but is superior to the TDC and the PID control in the performance robustness. Settling time is used as a measure of the performance.

MODELING AND VALIDATION OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINES FOR control ALGORITHM DEVELOPMENT

There is considerable interest in coordinated automotive engine/transmission control to smooth shifts, and for traction control of front wheel vehicles. This paper outlines a nonlinear dynamic engine model of a port fuel-injected engine, which can be used for control algorithm development. This engine model predicts the mean engine brake torque as a function of the engine controls (i.e., throttle angle, spark advance, fuel flow rate, and exhaust gas recirculation (E. G. R. ) flow rate). The model has been experimentally validated for a specific engine, and includes: . intake manifold dynamics, . fuel delivery dynamics, and . process delays inherent in the four-stroke engine. This model is used in real time within a control algorithm, and for system simulation. Also, it is flexible enough to represent a family of spark ignition automotive engines, given some test and/or simulation data for setting parameters.

Modeling and closed-loop control of stretch bending of aluminum rectangular tubes

During stretch bending, considerable springback will occur after a tube has been plastically bent. To predict the springback, a simplified two-flange model for stretch bending of a rectangular tube has been developed in which the strain history has been considered. A comparison has been made between the springback predicted by this model and experimental data, which shows rough agreement. Based on this model, a real time closed-loop control algorithm is developed.

Vibration control experiment of a slewing flexible beam

Two high-authority control/low-authority control algorithms are presented and experimentally validated on a fast slewing beam system. The first one termed the constrained motion method in two-stage (CMM-TS) accomplishes the rigid-body motion control and the optimal control of vibration suppression by a stepping motor. Another termed the constrained motion method in combination (CMM-CO) combines both the optimal control from stepping motor and active damping control from piezoelectric actuator for vibration suppression. Experimental results show that these algorithms are concise in formulation, efficient in hardware realization, and effective in vibration suppression.
