Tuning of asymmetrical fuzzy logic control algorithm for SPV system connected to grid

Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) cells and hydrogen fuel cells are green and efficient Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) with minimal environmental impact. Integration of DERs with conventional grid through inverters has proven to be an accepted technique for a continuous and good quality power to end users. For an efficient use of an inverter, its control algorithm plays an important role. In this paper, asymmetrical Fuzzy Logic control (FLC) algorithm is designed, developed and simulated for a SPV system connected to the grid. In proposed asymmetrical FLC algorithm, the fuzzy functions of error input close to zero are used for fine-tuning, and the error input away from zero are used for coarse tuning. The effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is demonstrated for controlling the PV inverter in unity power factor mode while maintaining the power quality standards and load balancing. Further, the system steady-state and transient response with the asymmetrical FLC algorithm is analyzed for linear as well as non-linear loads using MATLAB along with Simulink toolbox. Finally, a comparative analysis of asymmetrical FLC algorithm with other algorithms is presented to establish the superiority of the proposed algorithm. (C) 2017 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Semi-active control of a building complex with variable friction dampers

Semi-active coupling control of a building complex, which consists of a main building and a podium structure, using variable friction dampers is investigated in this paper for mitigating seismic responses. The mathematical model of a building complex with variable friction dampers under earthquake excitation is first established. A clipped control strategy is then developed to allow variable friction dampers to work effectively with linear quadratic Gaussian control algorithms as a global-feedback controller. Local-feedback controllers, which include viscous and Reid friction controllers, modulated homogeneous friction controllers, and non-sticking friction controllers, are also formulated for use with variable friction dampers. A building complex of a 20-story main building and a 3-story podium structure is finally used as a numerical example to demonstrate the effectiveness of semi-active coupling control and to compare the local-feedback controllers with the global-feedback controller. The control performance of each controller for the building complex with either single or multiple friction dampers under various ground motions is examined in terms of both story drifts and acceleration responses. The numerical results show that semi-active coupling control is quite promising for reducing seismic responses of both buildings. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The computer industry has been revolutionised by the advent of the RISC processor, which employs a very simple instruction set. This paper proposes a similar approach to the algorithm set of distributed control systems called 'Reduced Algorithm Set control' or RASC. Current algorithm sets are complex to understand, difficult to develop and full of hidden problems, This increases the difficulties in implementing complex control strategies. RASC is a simple but robust standard algorithm set providing all the facilities required to configure even the most complex of control schemes. This paper defines the RASC algorithm set and describes some implementation examples.

A new control algorithm for wide-sense nonblocking multiplane photonic banyan-type switching fabrics with zero crosstalk

A new control algorithm for log(2)(N,0,p) switching networks composed of 2 x 2 switching elements has been proposed recently. Under this algorithm log(2) (N, 0;p) switching networks with even number of stages are wide-sense nonblocking (WSNB) if p is the same as for the rearrangeable nonblocking (RNB) one. The considerred algorithm and WSNB conditions did not take into account crosstalk constraint, which is an important factor in photonic switching. This paper enhanced this algorithm to the case when crosstalk in the switching fabric is not allowed. WSNB conditions for this enhanced algorithm are also derived. It is shown, that the number of planes required is less than those derived earlier in other papers for WSNB multiplane banyan-type switching fabrics under crosstalk constraint. Under this algorithm, log(2)(N, 0, p) switching networks with odd number of stages and with zero crosstalk are WSNB if p is the same as for RNB one.

Free-flying robots in space: an overview of dynamics modeling, planning and control

Free-flying space manipulator systems, in which robotic manipulators are mounted on a free-flying spacecraft, are envisioned for assembling, maintenance, repair, and contingency operations in space. Nevertheless, even for fixed-base systems, control of mechanical manipulators is a challenging task. This is due to strong nonlinearities in the equations of motion, and consequently different algorithms have been suggested to control end-effector motion or force, since the early research in robotic systems. In this paper, first a brief review of basic concepts of various algorithms in controlling robotic manipulators is introduced. Then, specific problems related to application of such systems in space and a microgravity environment is highlighted. Basic issues of kinematics and dynamics modeling of such systems, trajectory planning and control strategies, cooperation of multiple arm space free-flying robots, and finally, experimental studies and technological aspects of such systems with their specific limitations are discussed.

Research developments in adaptive intelligent vibration control of smart civil structures

control algorithms are the most critical aspects in the successful control of civil structures subjected to earthquake and wind forces. In recent years, adaptive intelligent control algorithms are emerging as an acceptable substitute method to conventional model-based control algorithms. These algorithms mainly work on the principles of artificial intelligence (AI) and soft computing (SC) methods that make them highly efficient in controlling highly nonlinear, time-varying, and time-delayed complex civil structures. The current research probes to control algorithms, that this article set forth an inclusive state-of-the-art review of adaptive intelligent control (AIC) algorithms for vibration control of smart civil structures. First, a general introduction to adaptive intelligent control is presented along with its advantages over conventional control algorithms. Second, their classification concerning artificial intelligence and soft computing methods is provided that mainly consists of artificial neural network-based controller, brain emotional learning-based intelligent controller, replicator dynamics-based controller, multi-agent system-based controller, support vector machine-based controller, fuzzy logic control, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system-based controller, adaptive filters-base controller, and meta-heuristic algorithms-based hybrid controllers. Third, a brief review of these algorithms with their developments on the theory and applications is provided. Fourth, we demonstrate a summarized overview of the cited literature with a brief trend analysis is presented. Finally, this study presents an overview of these innovative AIC methods that can demonstrate future directions. A mathematical model of discrete manufacturing process control

A synthesis, at an arbitrary level of sequential discrete manufacturing process control systems has been provided in this paper. New methods have been presented: the MTS and GRAFPOL syntheses of sequential control systems. The MTS (net transformation method) is a method of classical synthesis of sequential control systems. It allows for the design of classical contact-relay sequential systems. GRAFPOL is a method of system synthesis. It allows for the modelling of discrete processes and programming of PLCs (programmable logic controllers). It has been shown that a single universal algorithm of a discrete manufacturing process exists, represented by the operation net, or its equivalent the GRAFPOL-MS net (of Mikulczynski and Samsonowicz). The algorithm of the process is the basis for determining a universal control algorithm which represents an action net or its equivalent, the GRAFPOL-TMS net. The control algorithm may be used at an arbitrary level of the synthesis of sequential control systems.

APPLICATION OF LEARNING control TO ACTIVE DAMPING OF FORCED VIBRATION FOR PERIODICALLY TIME VARIANT SYSTEMS

This paper deals with discrete time learning controllers for systems with periodically varying parameters. Several control rules are proposed which use a basic principle of learning control that is to utilize the information from the most recent cycle to improve the system performance in the next cycle. Convergence properties of proposed learning control algorithms are examined. These algorithms can easily be implemented without additional measurements and without modification of existing feedback/feedforward controller. In a numerical example learning controllers are applied to eliminate the forced vibrations of a magnetically suspended rotor with nonsymmetric stiffness properties. The vibrations result from unbalanced inertia forces. Simulation results show that the learning controller is effective in absorbing periodic disturbances.

Constrained Predictive control of an Irrigation Canal

This paper presents the application of a distributed model predictive controller (DMPC) to the control of an accurate model of an actual irrigation canal in Spain. The canal is modeled using the Saint-Venant equations and implemented using the well-known Simulation of Irrigation Canals (SIC) modeling software for irrigation canals. The DMPC algorithm has been implemented in Matlab and interfaced to SIC. In the distributed-control algorithms, the local controllers exchange information so that their control policies are optimal in the sense of getting the best value of a performance index. The results show that the proposed distributed-control algorithm obtains better control performance than a more-conventional decentralized control scheme without information exchange. This better performance translates directly into money and resource savings.

Modeling and control of the in-situ thermoplastic composite tape-laying process

In thermoplastic tape-laying with in-situ consolidation, a laminated composite is. constructed by the local application of heat and pressure. A moving head, applying heat and pressure, lays down and bonds a new layer, to the previously bonded layers (substrate). The temperature at the interface between the top ply and the substrate is critical to achieving interlaminar bonding. Recent research on the in-situ thermoplastic composite tape-laying process has focused on modeling, numerical analysis and experimental analysis, but little research has considered the control of this process. In this work a method is proposed for modeling and control of in-situ thermoplastic composite tape-laying. The key to the control algorithm is predicting the temperature at the interface between the top ply and the substrate. Based on a process model, a state feedback controller and a state estimator for temperature are designed for closed-loop control using the linear quadratic method Two different approaches are used to develop the process model for real-time closed-loop control through temperature feedback In the first approach, a low-order lumped parameter model is constructed from a finite difference scheme. The second approach constructs an empirical model through system identification. The structures of the two models are identical, but the parameters differ The experimental results have shown that the developed estimator and controller can accurately estimate and control the bonding temperature using temperature feedback indicating that the proposed modeling and control methodology can produce a high quality thermoplastic composite laminate.
