Efficient hydrogen flow control is of great importance to ensure the reliable operation of an automotive fuel cell system because it is closely associated with the safety and the economic efficiency. In this study, an effective hydrogen flow control algorithm for hydrogen excess ratio control is addressed by pointing out the recovery speed and overshoot response. Unlike previous studies on the hydrogen management systems of an automotive fuel cell, this study presents an analytic hydrogen tank model which can present the characteristics of the discharge and charge of hydrogen from a type 4 hydrogen tank. To this end, a mode reference adaptive control (MRAC) based on proportional-integral (PI) control is introduced, to ensure robust hydrogen flow during the dynamic operation of fuel cell system. The MRAC was compared with the nominal PI control and PWM control in the hydrogen management system of an automotive fuel cell operating within normal conditions, under steady-state responses and transient. Based on these result, it can further demonstrate that the MRAC algorithm shows better recovery speed and tracking performance than the nominal PI, and PWM control algorithm with respect to the transient behaviors.

Typical drivers are not ready to react to unexpected collisions from other vehicles. The initial impact can startle the driver who then fails to maintain control. Since a loss of control leads to intense skidding and undesirable lateral motions, more severe subsequent events are likely to occur. To reduce the severity of possible subsequent (secondary) crashes, this paper considers both vehicle heading angle and lateral deviation from the original driving path. The research concept here is different from today's electronic stability control systems in that it activates the differential braking even when the magnitude of yaw rate or vehicle slip angle is very high. In addition, the lateral displacement and yaw angle with respect to the road are part of the control objective. The Linear Time Varying Model Predictive control (LTV-MPC) method is used, with the key tire nonlinearities captured through linearization. We consider tire force constraints based on the combined-slip tire model and their dependence on vehicle motion. The computed high-level (virtual) control signals are realized through a control allocation problem which maps vehicle motion commands to tire braking forces considering constraints. Numerical simulation and analysis results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control algorithm.

A review on the control Systems Developed for Earthquake controlled Structures

It is thought that structural control systems developed for structures exposed to earthquake warnings may have an important place in the future as well as today. Among these, base isolation systems offer effective and practical solutions by damping earthquake-induced vibrations at the ısolatıon level. However, due to the lack of self-adaptation feature against some near- or far-field earthquakes, semi-active and active control systems have been proposed by some researchers. These systems, which use an external power source, also need a control algorithm in order to take action in the event of an earthquake. In other words, in order for the control system to adapt to any earthquake and act as a vibration damper, a passive device, energy to activate the device and a control algorithm are needed. This review covers important studies on passive, semi-active, hybrid and active control systems recommended for the protection of structures against vibrations caused by earthquakes. The advantages and disadvantages of the studies on these control systems compared to each other have been determined. As a result of the study, some inferences were made about what kind of control system would be recommended in the future, taking into account the deficiencies in the literature. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Shiraz University 2024.

This paper deals with the design of adaptive nonlinear control algorithms of biological wastewater treatment processes. The control design is based on the dynamical mass balance equations of the process and includes the on-line estimation of uncertain parameters (specific growth rates and yield coefficients). The procedure is illustrated by two examples (activated sludge process, anaerobic digestion).

Precision insertion control robot and its application

A tactile-controlled robot that makes possible precision inserting operations with a clearance of only a few microns is described. The principal part of this robot is the insertion control unit, which integrates positioning ability, sensibility, and flexibility, both mechanically and electronically. The most important feature of this robot is effective utilization of the flexible mechanism. A theoretical study proves the notable advantage of flexibility in precision inserting operations. As an insertion control algorithm suited flexibility, an adaptive search method that uses only one tactile sensor is developed. An experimental evaluation shows that a gentle and dexterous insertion simulating that of an experienced operator is possible using this control method. Computers are not used in operations;only a simple sequence controller is required. © 1976 by ASME.

This paper describes an automated lane changing control system that has been developed at General Motors Research and Development. This system uses a single monochrome camera to recognize lane markings on the road ahead and uses multiple short range radars to detect surrounding traffic and objects. A sensing unit calculates the host vehicle's lateral displacement and the heading angle from the center of its lane as well as the relative distance and relative speed of each object. Since the smoothness and comfort of lane change maneuvering are important measures of the control performance, the vehicle dynamic model is integrated into the desired path generation and vehicle's controller design to reduce the vehicle lateral acceleration and the lateral offset overshoot during the lane change maneuvering. To avoid heavy computation, a simplified model predictive control algorithm is proposed. The control algorithm calculates a steering angle command at the current time step to drive the vehicle to the desired path. The control method and algorithms are implemented on a demonstration vehicle and validated at straight roads and various curve roads of up to 0.001 [l/m] curvature for different vehicle speeds up to 100 [km/hr]. The results show that lane change maneuvering is successfully completed with lateral offset error less than 20 cm.

Space systems are subject to strict requirements in terms of relative position between two spacecraft and are controlled by actuators, which can perform limited output levels at low frequency. The aim of this work is the design of a sliding mode controller, which suitably combines simplex and super-twisting algorithms. This controller permits to reduce the number of thrusters required to control the spacecraft, the fuel consumption and the switching frequency at which the mono-directional actuators are turned on. The proposed control strategy can be easily converted in an on-board algorithm, with a minimum computational effort. Extensive simulations are carried out to validate the performance of the proposed sliding mode design. © 2017

Automatic control by controlling entities (aggregators and local controllers) enables Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to participate in the operation of the power grid. This helps to solve the problems of reliability and efficiency caused by the intermittent production of weather dependent energy sources, and the lack of control by system operators, caused by the increasing share of distributed energy sources. A DER ICT architecture and controlling entity ICT architecture are required to enable automatic control. The paper aims to describe the software components required for a generic scalable controlling entity ICT architecture, which does not require additional work for additional DERs and DER types. The paper presents concepts and ideas for the ICT architecture, and a case study illustrating the use of the ICT architecture, and the capabilities of the architecture. The plug 'n' play section describes self-healing and topology filtering for automatic setup and robust operation of control algorithms as part of the controlling entity ICT architecture.

In this paper we present the current status of control algorithm development for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) Alignment and Phasing System (APS). We discuss ways to address the main challenges inherent in the active control of extremely large segmented telescopes: high complexity of the control problem, disentangling the aberrations on the primary, secondary and tertiary mirrors, and the tight requirements for residual errors. We also present preliminary APS performance estimates derived from simulations. In particular, our simulations show that the tomographic aberration disentanglement is only marginally useful for TMT alignment.

For improving the dynamics of systems in the last decades model-based control design approaches are continuously developed. The task to design an accurate model is the most relevant and related task for control engineers, which is time consuming and difficult if in the case of complex nonlinear systems a complex modeling or identification problem arises. For this reason model-free control methods become attractive as alternative to avoid modeling. This contribution focuses on design methods of a model-free adaptive-based controller and modified model-free adaptive-based controller. Modified approach is based on the same adaptive model-free control algorithm performing tracking error optimization. Both approaches are designed for nonlinear systems with uncertainties and in the presence of disturbances in order to assure suitable performance as well as robustness against unknown inputs. Using this approach, the controller requires neither the information about the systems dynamical structure nor the knowledge about systems physical behaviors. The task is solved using only the system outputs and inputs, which are measurable. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by experiments using a three-tank system.
