In this paper we present the development, implementation and testing of a compact system for diagnosis and control of actuators based on metallic shape memory alloys (SMA). Using NiTi-SMA, very compact, cost-effective and lightweight actuation systems can be realized. In applications where the SMA is activated by internal Joule heating or its condition is diagnosed by the self-sensing of its electrical resistance, an electrical system capable of reliably measuring very small resistance changes (<1 ohm) without affecting the phase-state of the SMA is required. In addition, the system must offer the possibility to evaluate the nonlinear, hysteresis-afflicted behavior of the SMA and to handle this difficulty, e.g. utilizing a model-based control. This paper presents a simple compact and adaptive system based on a microcontroller that meets these requirements. Detailed functional tests were carried out with the system to establish a correlation between the change in electrical resistance in the range < 200 mOhm and the current strain state of the actuator. For this purpose, a first series of tests was performed, with the SMA wires working against a constant load. In a second tests series, the SMA wires worked against springs of different stiffness. The use of a microcontroller enables simple implementation of different control strategies. The control system for the non-linear resistance change utilizes a fuzzy logic which divides the control algorithm into three regimes. In the regime of the martensitic phase transformation a PI-controller is used. The state of actuators with an absolute electrical resistance < Ohm and a resistance change < 200 mohm associated with the phase transformation can be precisely measured and controlled with an accuracy < 10 mohm. The system can be configured with little effort for different tasks and shape memory systems of different sizes. Furthermore, it is possible to implement more complex control algorithms up to model-based controllers.

In the paper the description of the Field Oriented control with cascade control of electromechanical coordinates of synchronous electric drive is presented. The control algorithms components of the stator current and the speed of Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine that had developed on the basis of the concept of inverse problems of dynamics allowed obtaining high dynamic performance of quality control in conditions of parametric uncertainty. The simulation results had confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method control coordinates of electrical drive.

Multi-axle land vehicles with independent drive actuation on multiple axles offer improved stability and traction on various road surfaces. This is possible by exploiting the redundancy of the drive system to generate additional yaw moment and to maximize the utilization of individual tire-road contacts without significant extra power consumption by the drive motors. This paper aims at improving the efficiency of torque allocation with the addition of active steering while enhancing the dynamic performance of the independent hub motor driven multi-axle vehicles. The control algorithm outlined here employs a two level scheme. The higher level computes the desired global control efforts that are needed to track the reference yaw rate and slip angle state responses generated by a reference vehicle model, and the lower level executes optimal control allocation with a cost function that simultaneously takes into account I) maximization of the tire utilization on all axles considering dominant tire nonlinearities, and 2) minimization of the actuation efforts of the active steering system and the distributed motor torques. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified via comparison of the simulations of the control allocation scheme applied to a high fidelity multi-axle vehicle under several aggressive test maneuvers with different actuation configurations. The results suggest that the addition of active steering provides lower actuator power consumption and tire usage while ensuring enhanced lateral and longitudinal dynamic performance for the vehicle.

Navigation and routes planning for a group of unmanned surface vessels (USV) jointly moving in complex environment, including circumvention of seashore and islands, are important applications of computer-based decision-making support systems. A group of objects as an open complex system includes several hierarchy levels and may be controlled by a decision-maker supported by information-analytical software and methodical maintenance. Planning, as a stage of management, includes an a priori phase guidance for all objects in the group, coordinated in both time and directions of approach to the target set restricted by a set of obstacles. A discrete system of priorities reflects relative preferences of importance and allows choosing routes optimal in different senses. One can formalize such tasks in terms of different mathematical models including control problems of formation motion, theory of extreme networks and interval analysis. The paper bases on guaranteed approach to control of dynamic objects under uncertainty. Unified mathematical descriptions of shores, routes of individual objects and the whole group may be given in terms of hierarchic (i)-systems. This allows to reconcile data on geography, environment, object characteristics, peculiarities of control systems and data transmission, including sources and causes of uncertainty, and to describe movement of a group as an extreme problem of control and estimation. The results of computer simulation are considered. One may use similar models to explore economic aspects in application of heterogenic complex of autonomous surface and underwater vessels.

Tuning of fractional order proportional integral/proportional derivative controllers based on existence conditions

Fractional order proportional integral and proportional derivative controllers are nowadays quite often used in research studies regarding the control of various types of processes, with several papers demonstrating their advantage over the traditional proportional integral/proportional derivative controllers. The majority of the tuning techniques for these fractional order proportional integral/fractional order proportional derivative controllers are based on three frequency-domain specifications, such as the open-loop gain crossover frequency, phase margin and the iso-damping property. The tuning parameters of the controllers are determined as the solution of a system of three nonlinear equations resulting from the performance criteria. However, as with any system of nonlinear equations, it might occur that for a certain process and with some specific performance criteria, the computed parameters of the fractional order proportional integral/fractional order proportional derivative controllers do not fall into a range of values with correct physical meaning. In this article, a study regarding this limitation, as well as the existence conditions for the fractional order proportional integral/fractional order proportional derivative parameters are presented. The method could also be extended to the more complex fractional order proportional-integral-derivative controller. The aim of this research is directed toward demonstrating that when designing fractional order proportional integral/fractional order proportional derivative controllers, the choice of the performance specifications should be done based on some specific design constraints. The article shows that given a specific process and open-loop modulus and phase specifications, the gain crossover frequency (or in general, a certain test frequency used in the design), specified as a performance specification, must be selected such that the process phase fulfills an important condition (design constraint). This research focused on proposing a real-time control for intersection traffic signals at different roadway levels, including isolated intersections, corridors, and grid networks. First, the real-time control algorithm (DORAS) for isolated intersections was derived, and was tested on a real-life intersection with actuated control and OPAC. The results showed that DORAS was able to significantly reduce average vehicle delay and stops. Secondly, an advanced control algorithm (MADM) for corridors and grid networks was introduced, which was developed based on DORAS and Max Pressure (MP) method by Varaiya. The algorithm was tested in simulation for corridor and network case with other methods. The results showed that MADM outperformed the chosen real-time control methods, as well as the classic bandwidth maximization method in terms of average vehicle delay and stops. Finally, a relatively independent and isolated chapter, a mathematical algorithm that considers probabilistic vehicle presence was developed to treat the left-turn spillback at intersections given the locations of connected vehicles (CVs). Two consecutive intersections in College Station, TX were tested through simulation, in which the downstream intersection was subject to left-turn spillback. The results showed that the algorithm was able to significantly reduce the average vehicle delay at downstream intersection without impact the performance of upstream intersection. Future work includes testing the proposed real-time control algorithm on real corridors and networks, improving the computational efficiency, and comparing with other real-time control methods.

The system prioritizes proactive measures, employing predictive algorithms to anticipate hazards and adjust the aircraft's configuration and trajectory. The proposed control system will undergo rigorous testing through advanced simulations and real-world flight trials. Its performance and effectiveness in preventing accidents will be evaluated across various scenarios.
