Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for the Rearrangeability of WSW1 Switching Fabrics

This paper considers the three-stage switching fabrics of the wavelength-space-wavelength architecture, called the WSW1 switching fabrics, for elastic optical nodes. Seven control algorithms for simultaneous connection routing are described. One algorithm is designed for the WSW1 switching fabric with two inputs and two outputs, four algorithms for the WSW1 switching fabric with three inputs and outputs, and two algorithms for nodes with a capacity greater than 3. We establish the necessary conditions for rearrangeability and prove sufficient rearrangeable conditions for the proposed algorithms. In cases where the switching fabric capacity is a multiple of 3, the sufficient conditions obtained for the proposed algorithms are the best known and close to the necessary conditions.

A rapidly convergent adaptive controller applied to suppression of random noise transmission

In this paper, an efficient rapid convergent control algorithm will be developed and will be compared with other adaptive control algorithms using a plate-cavity system. The plate-cavity system used for these numerical experiments is a test bed of noise suppression technology for expendable launch vehicles. It consists of a flexible plate backed by a rigid cavity. Piezoelectric (PZT) actuators are considered to be bonded on both sides of the plate symmetrically. The plate is bombarded with an amplified random noise signal, and the control system is used to suppress the noise inside the cavity generated by the outside sound source. Other control algorithms included for the comparisons are LMS Widrow's finite impulse response (FIR) adaptive control algorithm [1], and a modified Godard's algorithm [2]. Comparisons of the random noise attenuation capability, transient and convergence performance, and computational requirements of each algorithm will be made as the order of the controller and relevant convergence parameters are varied.

A technique for the automatic detection of insect clutter in cloud radar returns

The U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program operate, 35-GHz millimeter-wavelength Cloud radars (MMCRs) in several climatologically distinct regions. The MMCRs, which are centerpiece instruments for the observation of clouds and precipitation, provide continuous. vertically resolved information on all hydrometeors above the ARM Climate Research Facilities (ACRF). However, their ability to observe clouds in the lowest 2-3 kin of the atmosphere is often obscured by the presence of strong echoes from insects, especially during the warm months at the continental midlatitude Southern Great Plains (SGP) ACRE Here, a new automated technique for the detection and elimination of insect-contaminated echoes from the MMCR observations is presented. The technique is based on recorded MMCR Doppler spectra, a feature extractor that conditions insect spectral signatures, and the use of a neural network algorithm for the generation of an insect (clutter) mask. The technique exhibits significant skill in the identification of insect radar returns (more than 92% of insect-induced returns are identified) when the sole input to the classifier is the MMCR Doppler spectrum. The addition of circular polarization observations by the MMCR and ceilometer cloud-base measurements further improve the performance of the technique and form an even more reliable method for the removal of insect radar echoes at the ARM site. Recently, a 94-GHz Doppler polarimetric radar was installed next to the MMCR at the ACRF SGP site. Observations by both radars are used to evaluate the potential of the 94-GHz radar as being insect free and to show that dual wavelength radar reflectivity measurements can be used to identify insect radar returns.

Estimating in-cylinder precombustion mixture temperatures using acoustic resonances

The air-fuel ratio of automotive engines during the warm-up period is difficult to control and contributes a substantial portion of the emissions on the EPA test cycle. High bandwidth estimation of the in-cylinder charge temperature provides opportunities for improvement in spark ignition (SI) engine control algorithms. Pressure sensor based algorithms for estimating air-fuel ratio (AFR) have been shown to be improved by bulk temperature information. This paper explores the suitability of using acoustic resonances to estimate charge temperature in the presence of an unknown AFR and without the 'sharp' excitation of diesel or knocking SI combustion. A technique that allows for the estimation of the precombustion average bulk charge temperature during a 1-2 ms interval based on acoustic resonance data gathered from a pressure transducer is described. A parameter estimation algorithm suitable for extracting the required frequency information from short data sets is identified. The variation in temperature estimates as a function of AFR has been explored using a computer simulation that accounts for the change in the ratio of specific heats with changing mixture strength. The performance of the acoustic resonance based temperature estimates has been evaluated by comparing them to predictions based on a polytropic compression.

The objective of this paper is to review the state-of-the-art and recent developments in Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) drives. The interest for improved performance and reliability has motivated many SRM advances in the recent years. Even after almost 30 years of research in SRM, which might appear to be the simplest of all machines, there remain critical issues to be explored to gain deeper insight into the SRM technology. The paper briefly discusses the historical background and the basic operating principles of the motor. The topics discussed include the current state of research in converter topologies, control algorithms, torque ripple, noise, and sensorless operation. Recent advances in the field of SRMs indicates that they will have an increasing influence in the area of variable speed drives in the coming decades.

PV array reconfiguration techniques for maximum power optimization under partial shading conditions: A review

Partial shading is a serious obstacle to effective utilization of photovoltaic (PV) systems since it result in significant output power reduction. PV array reconfiguration strategy is one of the most efficient used solutions to overcome negative effect caused by the partial shading in PV systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the major existing PV array reconfigurations approaches which are used to overcome the problem of partial shading. The different approaches are evaluated and compared according to their techniques, advantages and drawbacks. This work represents an interesting reference for researchers working in the field and a simple guide that serves as help for beginners on PV array reconfiguration.

Passive position error correction in Internet-based teleoperation

During the last two decades, important advances have been made in the field of bilateral teleoperation. Different techniques for performing stable teleoperation in non-ideal conditions have been developed, especially in a passivity framework. Until recently, however, no robust solutions for addressing this problem with variable delays and other drawbacks of packet-switched networks have been developed. The requirement of maintaining passivity in these circumstances degrades performance, due to the loss of energy that it involves. In this paper an arrangement is proposed which is capable of eliminating position errors, while maintaining passivity of an Internet-like channel. The behaviour of this new controller is studied by Lyapunov analysis, compared to previous methods, and validated through numerical simulations. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of time-of-use tariffs on the demand response flexibility of an all-electric smart-grid-ready dwelling

The paper is concerned with the development and evaluation of control algorithms for the implementation of demand response strategies in a smart-grid enabled all-electric residential building. The dwelling is equipped with a 12 kW heat pump, a 0.8 m(3) water storage tank, a 6 kW photovoltaic (PV) array, solar thermal collectors for domestic hot water heating and an electric vehicle. The building, located in Ireland, is fully instrumented. An EnergyPlus building simulation model of the dwelling was developed and calibrated using monitored data from the building. The developed model is used to assess the effectiveness of demand response strategies using different time-of-use electricity tariffs in conjunction with zone thermal control. A reduction in generation cost (-22.5%), electricity end-use expenditure (-4.9%) and carbon emission (-7.6%), were estimated when DR measures were implemented and compared with a baseline system. Furthermore, when the zone control features were enabled, the efficiency of the control improved significantly giving, an overall annual economic saving of 16.5% for the residential energy cost. The analysis also identified an annual reduction of consumer electricity consumption of up to 15.9%, lower carbon emissions of 27% and facilitated greater utilisation of electricity generated by grid-scale renewable resources, resulting in a reduction of generation costs for the utility of up to 45.3%. Input and output scaling and reordering for diagonal dominance and block diagonal dominance

The scaling of the input and output units has very significant effects for multivariable systems. It affects interaction, design aims, weighting functions, model order reduction, etc. The paper presents a scaling algorithm to balance the input and output units of square systems, This algorithm is independent of the order of the inputs and outputs and ensures that the row and column dominances are balanced for any choice of input-output pairs. It also maximises the geometric mean of the row and column dominance ratios. A second algorithm is then used to reorder the inputs and outputs to help obtain diagonal dominance. A third algorithm is used to obtain block diagonal dominance in large-scale systems enabling the use of simpler control structures. These algorithms can be used for dynamic multivariable system control, and can also be used for large scale systems, to divide them into sets of multivariable systems.
