Derivative backoff: The other saturation problem for PID controllers

The PID controller is by far the most common controller, and to ensure good behavior under all circumstances, a PID implementation must consider many practical aspects such as integrator windup, derivative kick, and bumpless parameter and mode changes. In this paper, an entirely new issue for the derivative part is introduced and has been named derivative backoff. It occurs when the process value measurement saturates and is a general issue that affects all PID implementations. Derivative backoff is described in detail and it is shown that it can cause considerable, undesired, effects on industrially relevant processes even when they are controlled by well-tuned PID controllers. An antibackoff strategy for PID controllers with integral action is proposed and evaluated, and a simple patch for existing PID implementations is presented. Possible strategies for PID controllers without integral action are also discussed. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The routing algorithm and wide-sense nonblocking conditions for multiplane baseline switching networks

A new control algorithm for the multiplane baseline switching network is proposed in this paper. This algorithm chooses a plane for a new connection in such a way that this new connection blocks the lowest number of possible future connections in the plane. We have proved, that when using this algorithm connections can be routed without blocking when the number of planes in the switching network is the same as in the rearrangeable one for even number of stages. When the switching network contains the odd number of stages, required number of planes is greater than in the rearrangeable switching network but less than in the strict-sense nonblocking one. Different implementations of the proposed algorithm are also considered. It should be noted, that the algorithm can determine the plane for a new connection in O(N-0.5) time or even in O(1) time depending on the implementation. The overall time complexity of the proposed algorithm is from O(N-3.5 log(2) N) to O(N log(2) N) depending on its implementation and number of processors used.

Open-Access Platform for the Simulation of Aerial Robotic Manipulators

Recent technological advances have brought increased attention to aerial robotic manipulators (ARMs), particularly in applications that involve physical interactions using tools such as welding and drilling, as well as in the autonomous pickup and transport of objects. However, translating control algorithms into real-world applications for aerial robotic manipulators may prove challenging, given the potential for accidents and the time-consuming nature of experiments;furthermore, the acquisition of aerial robotic manipulators could impose a substantial financial burden on universities, research centers, and companies. Therefore, this work addresses these issues by developing an open access platform to simulate aerial robotic manipulators and test control strategies. The presented simulator is based on the kinematics and dynamics of the Matrice-100 aerial platform equipped with a 3 DOF robotic arm, where the mathematical formulation was developed using the Euler-Lagrange formalism. In addition, optimization techniques were used to perform the parameter identification procedure, ensuring the development of an accurate model for the open-access platform. The simulator platform is built upon the integration of Python, the Robot Operating System (ROS), and Unity 3D. These components collaborate to describe and demonstrate the behavior of the aerial robotic manipulator during the test process of control system algorithms. Simple tests were conducted to validate the open-access simulator platform. The proposed approach ensures the evaluation, testing of control strategies, and the ability to conduct experiments before hardware implementations. Finally, the proposal was published as an open source platform available in the following Code.

A review of recent developments and technological advancements of variable-air-volume (VAV) air-conditioning systems

This study reviewed VAV systems modeling and simulations, control strategies and optimization tools, the airflow characteristics of VAV systems, some common VAV systems' faults, detection and diagnosis, energy usage and analysis, and the current applications of variable air volume (VAV) air-conditioning systems. VAV system modeling is very complex as it involves complex structures and parameters a result of which has led to lack of models that combine both the AHU and building with all the required parameters. The most common controllers used in VAV systems are the PID controllers. We saw that supply air temperature and the flow rate of supply air are the best parameters that can be optimized in a VAV system. as they greatly minimize energy consumption. Genetic algorithms have good robustness, and, can be easily parallelized. However, they suffer from shortcomings such as slow convergence rates under some conditions, and have difficulty in adjustment of algorithms since there are no rules for determining the number of individuals in populations. FLCs boost of advantages such as less or minimum overshoot, oscillation and power consumption compared to conventional PID controllers, can be used in MIMO systems, and they do not require models as they can control non-linear processes. Airflow control in VAV systems can be achieved through controlling static pressure and position of the damper. Literature survey shows that balancing and distribution of airflow in VAV air-conditioning systems can be considered to be one of the main challenging areas of research concerning VAV system control. Most methods used today for detecting and diagnosing faults are hybrid. These are superior to the conventional methods of FDD. In conclusion, VAV air-conditioning systems are the most energy efficient systems in use today. Despite of their current strengths, VAV systems energy saving potential can still be improved. The authors describe a new deterministic algorithm for endless reset-free polarization control (PC) based on sequences of tunable phase shifters and directional couplers, which can be implemented in a variety of discrete (e.g., rotating waveplates) and integrated optic material platforms. They provide a novel quantitative formulation of what endless reset-free PC operation means and prove in a rigorous way that the algorithm satisfies the defined requirements.

An empirical tool force model for precision machining

The accuracy of precision machining operations could be improved through tool force feedback. Tool force is ideally suited for use in a control algorithm because it contains information on the instantaneous depth of cut, feed rare and condition of the tool. A tool force model that could form the basis of this new control technique has been developed. By measuring the shear angle from micrographs of chip cross sections, equations for the forces due to chip formation and the friction between the chip and the tool have been written. Furthermore, the effects of elastic deformation of the workpiece (spring back) on chip formation and the measured forces, which can be significant in precision machining have been included in the model. Machining experiments were conducted with a 0 deg rake diamond tool and four metals that are commonly diamond turned. For machining with newly lapped as well as worn tools, the calculated forces were in excellent agreement with the measured values for the array of workpiece materials.

Reduction of wheel force variations with magnetorheological devices

At present, owing predominantly to advances in measurement technology and microprocessor control, development of a new generation of smart materials may lead to widespread adoption of semi-active damping systems into everyday life. An important class of such materials includes so-called "intelligent'' magneto-rheological. A dominant feature of these materials is that their physical properties can be altered relatively easily under the influence of an external magnetic field. In this paper, a simplified model of a vehicle equipped with in-time controlled semi-active magneto-rheological suspension system is presented. Moreover, simple algorithms employed to control it are described and their efficacy studied by computer simulation and direct experiment. Torsional as well as reciprocating vibration magneto-rheological dampers (MRD) were used as in-time semi-active controls. In addition, a magneto-rheological rotary brake (MRB) was employed as a torsional vibration damper. As a result of direct experiments and simulations we were able to obtain characteristics of both devices showing dissipative features and relationship between model parameters. The main goal of this paper is to present methods for assessing the impact of changes in properties of MRD and MRB dampers for a reduction in variations in vertical wheel forces. These properties are controlled by demonstrated optimization algorithm responsible for an optimal selection of friction in magneto-rheological dampers. Also, an optimization criterion has been proposed. A control algorithm presented in this paper has been verified by means of conducting an extensive experimental investigation employing a Ford Transit van. Based on the results of our numerical and experimental studies it has been proved that through properties changes in MRD and MRB dampers it had been possible to reduce the variations in vertical wheel forces. Thus, an increase in the safety of the vehicle is possible.

A Quasi-Actual Mechatronic Instrument for Realistically Testing Roller-Piston Friction Pairs

Cam-lobe radical-piston hydraulic motors can achieve ultrahigh power rotary output (up to megawatts), which are widely used in tunnel boring machines, dredgers, and other high-end equipment. In these applications, hydraulic motors always operate in complex and drastically changing conditions, causing their key roller-piston friction pairs to be vulnerable to wear and failure. However, there is a lack of easy-to-use and low-cost testing instruments to investigate the failure behavior of friction pairs and verify the reliability of the developed friction pairs. For that, this study developed a quasi-actual mechatronic instrument that can realistically reproduce various actual operating conditions to achieve quasi-actual testing of the friction pair. This instrument is composed of three parts: a testing bench, a hydraulic system, and a control system. The hydraulic system with a proportional relief valve is responsible for adjusting the hydraulic pressure on the piston in the testing bench, while the roller speed is controlled by a servo motor in the testing bench. To realize the quasi-actual control, an improved fuzzy PID and PI control algorithms embedded in the control system are proposed to real-time regulate the hydraulic pressure and roller speed, respectively. Finally, several quasi-actual testing experiments are conducted to reproduce different operating conditions of roller-piston friction pairs in a tunnel boring machine. The experimental results show that quasi-actual hydraulic pressures and roller speeds obtained from the developed mechatronic instrument are in good agreement with the actual operating data from the tunnel boring machine, indicating that the mechatronic instrument offers a feasible, easy-to-use, and quasi-actual way for testing roller-piston friction pairs.
