The BioMicroRobotic is an emerging technology involving microelectronic, robotic and biomedical sciences and technologies in order to help medicine to perform better treatments. Autonomous BioMicroRobots (BMR) needs a control core to perform special tasks. This paper describes a microcontroller architecture selected to perform BMR's control algorithms for legs displacement. This microcontroller is based on an 8-bits RISC architecture and coupled with a Manchester decoder for communication purpose. As input signal goes through a serial port, a serial/parallel converter has been implemented to load instructions in the microcontroller. The technology CMOS 0.18 mum is targeted for implementation. The output signals for legs control will be transmitted through a 8-bits parallel ports.

In this work, we present our experience in designing laboratory prototypes for practical teaching in control engineering at the Faculty of Engineering (ESIDE) at the University of Deusto. These prototypes have been designed in order to achieve a practical training that is more closely related industrial practice. For this design, we first analyse the technical profile generally demanded by enterprises. The professional qualification of our students in the fields of Industrial Instrumentation, Systems and Automation is analysed. Developed prototypes are described and main differences between using commercial educational equipment and using real industrial equipment are analysed.

The description of the process and the main control strategies for a Combined Cycle Power Plant are presented. The corresponding process models, which were programmed in C language, are the basis for a PC based dynamic simulator of a CCPP that was applied to test the control algorithms belonging to a new Distributed control System, previously to its conunissioning and start up. The control algorithms for the gas turbines, steam turbine, heat recovery steam generators and the condensate system, were carefully tested by means of simulation tests, they were checked for proper operation and tuned while the units were coming back on line after the DCS installation outage. The whole graphical results showing the trend process were collected for analysis.

The DHS are formed by enlarging networks of heat distribution to consumers and at the same time they interconnect the heat sources gradually built. DHS is used in larger cities of some European countries e.g. in Germany, France, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Poland and others. Production technology of heat by means of combined production of power and heat (CHP) is an important way to increasing of thermal efficiency of closed thermal loop. The paper shows the system access to the control of extensive DHS - controlled plant. It concerns automatic control of technological string “production, transport + distribution, consumption” of extensive district heating and that is the contribution of this paper. control by means of advanced control algorithms is a tool (up to now neglect) for decreasing cost of energy and increasing the level of environment protection.

In this paper a PC-based programmable controller is presented. A new assembler-like programming language is also presented, but since the controller is a SoftPLC it is possible to implement even very complicated control algorithms and functions. Moreover, plugins are introduced that allow the dynamical loading of needed control algorithms and assure that the control loops will be executed independently of the program execution. In addition TCP/IP protocol is used by the controller to communicate with the plant. A general architecture is presented along with examples of simple instructions. The controller is realised as an application realised in a LabView environment for running on a PC computer. An example program is presented for time-optimal control of clearing process in batch sedimentation.

The intelligent assembly or disassembly concept integrates the control and the planning of an automated material handling system based on a set of mobile robots. This work presents and analyses some results in path tracking control on complex plane trajectories for a differential wheeled mobile robot with memorized trajectories. For the same model of the robot, the control uses alternatively two different algorithms. The first one is a bang-bang algorithm and the second is a classical solution in path tracking control.

This paper focuses on two main categories of the multiconjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) parameter space for performance optimization: the geometrical configuration of guide stars and deformable mirrors (DMs), and the wavefront reconstructors. From the first category it is shown how, for a fixed reconstructor and imaging wavelength, the performance metrics with a few important exceptions improve with an increasing number of i) DMs, ii) actuators per DM and iii) guide stars. The metrics are seen to degrade with i) an increasing field of compensation and ii) DM conjugation altitude mismatch with the significant turbulent atmospheric layers. In the second category, this study also compares the performance with a fixed MCAO configuration using the least-square estimator (LSE) and the maximum a posteriori estimator (MAP) for wavefront reconstruction. The MAP is shown to perform significantly better than the LSE at low or intermediate signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), and somewhat better even in the absence of noise due to its a priori knowledge of the phase statistics.

Many automation tasks require human intervention and guidance. A control system architecture combining work units and master units by software interfaces is described. OSCAR(1) is incorporated as a universal transform service. It is regarding dynamic properties of work units. Implementing the transform at the master site eases integration of new robot types. The dynamic behaviour when crossing singular points is compared with a closed form standard transform. The control system has also been applied in medical manipulator systems.
