Greenhouse control computers are an essential part of modern greenhouse operation. Climate, irrigation and nutrient supply must be controlled, in an economical way, to produce the best crop conditions. Current research on CO2 enrichment and optimal growth strategies implies the use of powerful tools, either based on hardware or software. This paper describes the design and implementation of a distributed data acquisition and control system for computerised agricultural management systems that is being developed at Universidade of Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Vila Real. Different communications platform concepts, such as controller Area Network (CAN), Wireless Technologies, Ethernet and Internet tools supported by Transfer control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and e-mail tools supported by Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) were used to achieve a network with a low-cost, flexible, and functional characteristics. The system management and maintenance tasks are divided into two types of performance levels. At a lower supervision level, a Local controller placed in the greenhouses performs the monitoring/control and communications actions. The management decisions are performed at the higher level. The techniques and tools, which provide to the user a transparent, friendly and intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI) will be presented. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The paper presents a methodology for applying the μ-synthesis to a real high order system: launch vehicle attitude control. The design involves robust characteristics against uncertainties of the system parameters as well as precise tracking performance under the limited rigidity. As the plant dynamics has an extremely high order and unstable character, the standard μ-synthesis cannot be directly applied, thus, the standard procedure is modified in a special way in order to make the approach more efficient. The methodology provided in the study will contribute to better understanding how to apply the robust control theory to complicated real problems.

A control structure allowing all varying process parameters to be utilised in highlevel control decisions was developed and implemented in a 5 litre reactor system. The integrated control structure was used to implement PI control of OUR/CER ratio (1/RQ) in a fed batch fermentation of *** BL21 DE3 on complex media. The feed controller was successful, with setpoints between 1.3 and 1.5 maintained. Future development of the integrated control system is discussed.

This paper presents the design and simulation of adaptive control for a two input-two output system together with the real-time control of a laboratory model using this design method. The synthesis is based on a polynomial approach. Decoupling, where the compensator is placed ahead of the system, suppresses the interactions between control loops. The results of the simulation and the real-time experiments are also given.

A two-link system consisting of two weightless links connected by a joint with a motor is considered. The system lies on a horizontal rough plane and three arbitrary point masses are located at the free ends of the links and at the joint. The control torque produced by the motor is chosen to satisfy the equilibrium condition for each link of the system. All quasistatic motions of the two-link system are found. Over the past decade, an intense effort has brought together theoretical and laboratory tools for controlling molecular motion with tailored laser pulses. Various means for designing laser pulses are available, but presently, the most viable general procedure for achieving successful control over quantum systems in the laboratory is through the use of closed loop learning algorithms. The logic behind the operation of such algorithms is discussed, along with a summary of several recent laboratory achievements exploiting closed loop learning to control quantum and nonlinear optical phenomena.

Motions of multibody linkages over a horizontal plane with dry friction are considered. Linkages consist of several rigid bodies connected by revolute joints with vertical axes. control torques are created by actuators installed at the joints. Under the proposed control laws, the linkages can perform variuos motions over a plane. The dependence of the average speed of motion on mass and geometric parameters is investigated. Optimal parameters are obtained which maximize the average speed.
