In this paper, the rapid prototyping station (RPS) for a hybrid energy storage system based on batteries and supercapacitors is presented. Main requirements to the functional capabilities and control features of experimental installation have been formulated with respect to state-of-the-art trends and, according to them, the RPS structure is designed. The concept of experimental testing and designed prototyping system can be used for implementation of different control algorithms and power management strategies for electric vehicles, renewable energy and smart grids applications.

This paper describes the design, simulation and testing of a high response servo-proportional valve. The purpose of this work is to study the possibilities, using a modeling technology, to increase the dynamic performance of a servo-proportional directional developing new algorithms for the digital control system. The development of digital technology, introduced also in the control of proportional valves, have led to the reduction of the differences between the overall characteristics of proportional and servo valves so that the proportional ones can be a suitable solution in many applications, where servo-valves are traditionally used. The mathematical model of the servo-proportional valve has been developed by using the commercial software AMESim((R)) (Advanced Modeling and Simulation Environment for Systems Engineering). The model includes the proportional solenoid and the linear transducer. Digital control of the proportional valve proposed in this paper, is a key part of this research. Its mathematical model and the control algorithm have been built using Matlab((R)). Both models have been run in co-simulation to improve the overall valve performance. The experimental tests have been performed in the labs of Duplomatic Oleodinamica SpA and Continental Hydraulic Inc. The data have been used to validate the simulation models.

Much research has been conducted on energy management for memory and disks. Most studies use control algorithms that dynamically transition devices to low power modes after they are idle for a certain threshold period of time. The control algorithms used in the past have two major limitations. First, they require painstaking, application-dependent manual tuning of their thresholds to achieve energy savings without significantly degrading performance. Second, they do not provide performance guarantees. In one case, they slowed down an application by 835%! This paper addresses these two limitations for both memory and disks, making memory/disk energy-saving schemes practical enough to use in real systems. Specifically, we make three contributions: (1) We propose a technique that provides a performance guarantee for control algorithms. We show that our method works well for all tested cases, even with previously proposed algorithms that are not performance-aware. (2) We propose a new control algorithm, Performance-directed Dynamic (PD), that dynamically adjusts its thresholds periodically, based on available slack and recent workload characteristics. For memory, PD consumes the least energy, when compared to previous hand-tuned algorithms combined with a performance guarantee. However, for disks, PD is too complex and its self-tuning is unable to beat previous hand-tuned algorithms. (3) To improve on PD, we propose a simple, optimization-based, threshold-free control algorithm, Performance-directed Static (PS). PS periodically assigns a static configuration by solving an optimization problem that incorporates information about the available slack and recent traffic variability to different chips/disks. We find that PS is the best or close to the best across all performance-guaranteed disk algorithms, including hand-tuned versions.

It is widely known that Ethernet networks are susceptible to high-power electromagnetics (HPEM). Even with electromagnetic disturbance levels below the threshold, at which a hardware failure of components can be observed, there are impacts on the data transmission between two computers. A typical effect on the application level is a decrease of the maximum data rate between two endpoints with a higher field strength until the transmission completely breaks down. To quantify the effect of electromagnetic disturbances it is necessary to distinguish between effects which are software-related due to control algorithms and applications behaviour on higher protocol layers, and hardware -related effects caused by physical interaction between the network components and the disturbance. This paper shows the results of a new measurement method compared to classical tests using a FTP data transmission.

A tire model is an essential element in the vehicle controller development and various complexities of tire models have been developed and used. It is highly desirable for the control systems to use a tire model that is computationally efficient and easy to implement in control algorithms while providing desired performance. In this paper, a wheel torque controller was developed using a non-linear predictive control theory 8 degree of freedom vehicle model, and a simplified nonlinear tire model in order to control the vehicle yaw rate and side slip angle. The performance of this controller was compared to that based on well known Magic Formula tire model. The effectiveness and limitations of the proposed controller were discussed through simulation.

Thermal storage systems were originally designed to shift on-peak cooling production to off-peak cooling production to reduce on-peak electricity demand. Recently, however, the reduction of both on- and off-peak demands is becoming an exceedingly important issue. Reduction of on- and off-peak demands can also extend the life span and defer or eliminate the replacement of power transformers due to potential shortage of building power capacity caused by anticipated equipment load increases. Next day daily average electricity demand is a critical set point to operate chillers and associated pumps at the appropriate time For this paper, a mathematical analysis of the annual daily average cooling of a building was conducted, and three real-time building load forecasting models were developed a first-order autoregressive model, a random walk model, and a linear regression model. A comparison of results shows that the random walk model provides the best forecast. A complete control algorithm integrated with forecast model for a chiller plant including chillers, thermal storage system and pumping systems was developed to verify the feasibility of applying this algorithm in the building automation system. Application results are introduced in this paper as well.

Numerical simulation of combustion processes and analysis of temperature field non-uniformity in GTE-65 gas turbine combustor

Our company has tested annular combustion chamber, being one of main components of hot gas path for GTE-65 gas turbine in mid power class. In order to arrange gaseous fuel oxidation process a method of lean homogenized air-fuel mixture burning is realized in the combustor. The same type two-contour burner modules are installed on the combustor cap in two rows by 60 burners in a row (120 burners in all). To optimize control algorithm and confirm main performances a model compartment, representing 1/12 part (segment) of actual combustion chamber, was produced. The tests have been conducted with using GP "Ivchenko-Progress" and OJSC "Power Machines" test rigs on modes from ignition to full load. Stable firing mode and pollutant emissions have been determined and the liner temperature condition and temperature field unevenness have been checked. The combustor control algorithm was optimized. As a result of the conducted tests there were confirmed environmental requirements to the combustor NOx emissions (less than 25 ppm). Mathematical simulating machine was being used to predict the combustor operation performances at the gas turbine operating in field conditions. 3D numerical analysis was carried out to predict the temperature and NOx fields before the experiment preparation. In order to meet the numerical model with the test conditions after the experiment the boundary conditions were specified (fuel / air temperature and mass flow rate) Full and partial load calculations were performed for simulation and field operation conditions. The calculation results were compared with experimental data obtained in the course of bench test. Errors obtained by comparison with numerical and experimental data were as follows: full model pressure drop: similar to 3-4%;ratio of peripheral and radial nonuniformities of temperature fields: 2%;nitrogen oxides at various operation modes: maximum 25 ppm. This paper presents the development of algorithm nonlinear predictive controller based on the model, NMPC, trajectory tracking applied to a wheelchair. Also it illustrated the kinematic and dynamic modeling of human-wheelchair system is considered in which the deviation of the center of gravity of the system due to postural problems of man, limb amputations, or obesity user. In NMPC they considered restrictions on control measures, as well as in the states of the system. The results show that the movements of the wheelchair converge to the desired trajectory in accordance with the provisions of the theoretical design;with analysis times NMPC calculation algorithm concludes that the controller can be implemented in real time.

This work presents a systems approach in machining process control. Traditional force-based machining process control has been focused on single machine-single operation. The force or power sensor is used to measure the instantaneous force/power, and control action is taken by changing the feedrate in real time to follow a given force setpoint. The application of such control has successfully been implemented to prevent chatter and to elongate tool life by minimizing tool wear. This research seeks to extend the application of control algorithms to learn about the machining system (comprised in this context of a workpiece being operated on in progressive machining), and how knowledge generated by the process can be passed on to the next process for optimization. To demonstrate this, turning of a partially hardened bar is explored. A nonlinear mechanistic force model-based control framework attempts to control the cutting force at a designated setpoint, with material properties changing over the cut. The force coefficients for the material are calculated offline using experimental data and Bayesian inference methods. Since the hardened part of the bar will shift the force coefficient values, an online estimation strategy (Bayesian Recursive Least Square estimator) is used to learn the new coefficients as well as satisfying the control objective. With the newly learned coefficients passed downstream, the subsequent operation experiences no compromise of control objective as well reduces the maximum values of force encountered. Numerical analyses presented show the adaptation and control scheme performance.
