The problem of determining an oral dose, or schedule of oral doses, that gives rise to an arbitrary area-under-curve or to points on the time-series for a variable of interest in a drug kinetics model is considered. These two measures are considered as surrogates for the particular drug response to the dose. The approach taken is to formulate the problem as a fixed point one to which a version of the contraction mapping theorem can be applied. The results, illustrated for a model for the anti-cancer agent topotecan, demonstrate the applicability of the approach. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Demand response control algorithms assist in shifting a part of the electricity demand of building from periods of high demand and price towards periods of lower price. Without demand response, also the grid operators must rely on and use expensive and fossil fuel power plants during peak periods of electricity usage. The objective of this doctoral thesis was to study the inﬂuence of demand response actions on thermal comfort and electricity cost in residential buildings with different heating systems in Finland. This simulation-based thesis used building energy simulation, hourly electricity price and weather data to study the inﬂuence of demand response actions. The ﬁrst step of this thesis was to ﬁnd out the acceptable range of indoor air and operative temperatures complying with the recommended thermal comfort categories in accordance with the EN 15251 standard. To conduct this, the Fanger approach was used to predict the thermal comfort of occupants. The second step was to reduce the electricity cost by means of demand response control algorithms, without sacriﬁcing the thermal comfort. These aims were applied for electrically heated and heat-pump heated residential buildings. Several rule-based demand response control algorithms and a model-based one were presented, developed and studied. The rule-based control algorithms were based on the trend of previous hourly electricity prices, present electricity price, and trend of future hourly electricity prices. Also, these control algorithms were based on median, maximum subarray and moving average methods. The model-based control algorithm was based on the trend of future hourly electricity prices, and method of linear programming with a hybrid wavelet transform and a dynamic neural network. All presented control algorithms maintain the thermal comfort of the occupants at the desired levels. In this paper, the performance optimization of multi-core processors is addressed with respect to their temporal and thermal behavior. This paper uses the location of voltage regulators to monitor temperature fluctuations by determining the task allocation on the processors. The algorithm protects the processor from overheating and simultaneously ensures that the program runs at an optimal speed. The proposed technique has a comparatively fast runtime of O(logn) as compared to other task optimization algorithms. A four-threaded task delegated to an eight core processor with sixteen voltage regulators is optimized for allocation in approximately 2 milliseconds, regardless of the number of instructions in each thread. The proposed technique will efficiently delegate tasks to processors while maintaining the safe operating areas and temperature ranges in the processor.

FRICTION-INDUCED DYNAMICS OF AXIALLY-MOVING MEDIA IN CONTACT WITH AN ACTIVELY-POSITIONED SURFACE

The dynamics of an axially-moving flexible medium are examined in the context of an application where the medium is partially supported by a frictional surface, that actively-orients itself relative to the direction of transport. The stability and motion of the medium are of interest in a magnetic tape data storage application where the orientation of a sensing surface is continuously altered in order to 'follow' the medium's motion. Moving media that arc, in contact with such guiding surfaces experience friction excitations induced by the relative motion in addition to what is observed with a stationary guiding surface. Friction-induced bending moments, as well as tension fluctuation beyond the permissible limits for the flexible material can erode the potential benefits of such active positioning. This paper describes some of these dynamic phenomena using the simplified example of a planar guiding surface whose orientation is dynamically altered relative to the moving medium. A physical model for the friction-induced excitation of the moving medium is developed, and the dynamics are analyzed for their effect on on critical design parameters such the achievable bandwidth of the active control algorithm, as well as with respect to constraints on the geometry and positioning of the guiding surface.

Methods for calculating electric losses in asynchronous and synchronous electric drives are presented, as well as electric drive control algorithms based on synchronous reluctance machines with switching of magnetic flux and excitation winding on the stator and asynchronous motors by the criterion of minimum losses are proposed. It is shown that minimal losses are possible with control modes BLDC-mode with two-phase switching windings (BLDC 2) and power windings from a three-phase current source (BLAC mode) according to the following indicators: average torque, ripple torque, the number of keys of the power converter. It is shown that the BLAC-control mode turned out to be the best in the nominal operating mode. The average torque value turned out to be 7% higher than in BLDC 2 mode, the maximum voltage value of the converter was 2 times lower, which allows you to select keys for a lower voltage, the maximum voltage increment value of the converter was 6 times lower, which reduces the requirements for speed control loop current drive. It is shown that in the overload mode, a control algorithm with sequential excitation is preferable, when the current in the excitation winding increases in proportion to the current in the power windings, which has significantly reduced electrical losses. In this case, the torque of the electric drive increases almost linearly, without visible restrictions on the overload capacity and, at a five-fold current overload, amounts to 4.3 nominal values.

The availability of low-cost, readily programmable digital hardware offers numerous opportunities for novel modeling and control approaches. One such opportunity is the realization of hardware modeling of distributed dynamic systems. Such models could be useful for control algorithms that require highfidelity models operating in real-time. The ultimate goal is to utilize digital systems with programmable hardware. As a proof-of-concept, multiple discrete microcontrollers have been used to emulate how programmable hardware devices may be used to simulate a distributed vibrating system. Specifically, each microcontroller is treated as a single vibrating mass with stiffness and damping coupling between the masses. Each microcontroller has associated position and velocity variables. The only additional knowledge required to compute the acceleration of each "mass" is thus the position and velocity of each immediate neighboring mass/microcontroller. The computation time is independent of the number of nodes;adding nodes results in no reduction in processing speed. Consequently, the computational approach will be applicable to very high order models. Practical implementation of such models will require digitally programmable hardware such as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA), however an added benefit will be a still greater reduction in cost, as multiple microcontrollers are replaced by a single FPGA. It is expected that the hardware modeling approach described in this work will have application not only in the field of vibration modeling and control, but also in other fields where control of distributed dynamic systems is desired.

In this contribution a modification of the ALINEA local on-ramp control strategy is presented. In this modification, as in ALINEA, the metering rate is determined by a feedback mechanism where the occupancy rate downstream of the merge area is used, yet a correction procedure is added, where the stability of the flow upstream of the merge area is used in order to fine-tune the metering rate. Preliminary results from microscopic simulation show that this alternative strategy may yield a significant higher throughput of on-ramp without deteriorating freeway operations. © 11th IFAC Symposium on control in Transportation Systems.

Renewable energy is a topic of significant interest and importance in the world today. Ocean wave energy, particularly on the western coasts of land masses, has considerable potential as a renewable resource. However, to rightly evaluate the overall cost of energy for wave energy converters, survivability and maintenance issues must be addressed. This study endeavors to develop tools for real-time damage quantification for use with life extending control algorithms, and shows that energetic sea conditions may cause much greater damage than the associated benefits in power production. Therefore, control strategies that consider a tradeoff between damage and power production will be necessary in implementing cost effective wave energy converter operation.
