This book celebrates Professor Mathukumalli Vidyasagar’s outstanding achievements in systems, control, robotics, statistical learning, computational biology, and allied areas. The contributions in the book summarize the content of invited lectures given at the workshop “Emerging Applications of control and systems theory” (EACST17) held at the University of Texas at Dallas in late September 2017 in honor of Professor Vidyasagar’s seventieth birthday. The paper presents the results of research concerning the Polish Power Exchange as a management system, obtained using the data quoted on the Day-Ahead Market. As a result of identification, 24 arx discrete linear parametric models of MISO type were obtained (with 24 input quantities and single output quantities). Input quantities are the volume of electrical energy supplied and sold in each hour of the 24-hour day, and output quantities are average prices weighted by the volume of electrical energy obtained in each hour of the 24-hour day. These models were converted to continuous parametric models, and further into continuous models in the states space. The results of the discussion were also presented, including the interpretation of state variables, as well as the model's parameters and the conclusions together with directions for further research.

This book aims to bring together the latest innovative knowledge, analysis, and synthesis of fractional control problems of nonlinear systems as well as some related applications. Fractional order systems (FOS) are dynamical systems that can be modelled by a fractional differential equation carried with a non-integer derivative. In the last few decades, the growth of science and engineering systems has considerably stimulated the employment of fractional calculus in many subjects of controltheory, for example, in stability, stabilization, controllability, observability, observer design, and fault estimation. The application of controltheory in FOS is an important issue in many engineering applications. So, to accurately describe these systems, the fractional order differential equations have been introduced.
