Advanced control methods for French fry quality improvement

This article describes the results of a TCS Programme that investigated approaches for the improved control of a French fry production line. Initial knowledge elicitation from process experts, coupled with data analysis, revealed the existing operational strategy. The information gathered highlighted limitations of the current strategy, indicated how it could be improved on and allowed a benefits analysis to be undertaken to financially Justify the work. Results from the implementation of the control enhancements demonstrate that the predicted improvements were achieved.

Fault diagnosis of industrial actuators in a sugar factory - a European study

The likelihood that actuator systems (e.g. control valves, servo motors, positioners) will malfunction is significant when these components are installed in harsh environments (e.g. with high temperature, humidity, pollution, chemical solvents, aggressive media etc.). Determination of small (incipient, hard to detect) faults before they become serious clearly has an important influence on the actuator's predicted lifetime.

ONLINE ADAPTIVE-control OF A FERMENTATION PROCESS

The feasibility of an adaptive controller for the fermentation of baker's yeast is investigated. A simplified model of the process was developed to aid the design of the parameter estimator and multivariable controller. Experiments were performed on a small-scale, fully instrumented fermenter under the control of the online real-time adaptive package. Results are presented to show the successful performance of the adaptive technique achieved by controlling various process variables, in both SIMO and MIMO configurations. The work indicates that the application of the adaptive technique compares favourably with semiautomated control techniques while providing great opportunities for enhancement and thereby superior control. It has been found necessary to omit a considerable amount of the biological detail surrounding the fermentation process so that attention can be focussed upon the adaptive-control applications.

The paper describes an ongoing investigation into the application of a multivariable adaptive control technique to a fed-batch baker's yeast fermentation. The application of conventional 3-term controllers provides poor control due to problems in tuning individual loops, owing to the time-variant and nonlinear properties of the process. Furthermore, the main process variable, cell mass, cannot be measured directly and hence control must be effected by either estimating the cell mass online or, alternatively, by controlling the environment for optimal cell growth. The latter approach requires the simultaneous optimisation of two or more process variables, requiring multivariable techniques. Results are presented describing the practical problems of establishing a suitable structure for the adaptive technique and the experience gained in using recursive least-squares estimation of process variables. The paper also includes results of the online application of multivariable adaptive control on a pilot-plant fermenter.

A generalised control algorithm is developed for application to industrial processes. The algorithm can cater for multivariable interactions, time delays and environmental disturbances. It is proposed as a fundamental building block for the development of hierarchical control schemes. The algorithm is a feature of a c.a.d. facility for the modelling, design and implementation of hierarchical computer controls. The facility incorporates interactive graphics as a major design aid. Application to a multiple-effect evaporator is described. It is demonstrated that the techniques have realistic potential for useful practical application.
