An essential pending problem in the modeling and control of fermentation processes is the variability of biological systems, expressed as predictable or unpredictable structural alterations in the control plant. Such phenomena, naturally or artificially induced, require flexible alteration of control system structure by proper switching to one or another control strategy. In order to overcome the rigid restriction imposed upon the plant structure by the conventional control approach, we propose here a two-level hierarchical scheme, which provides the control system with a kind of structural adaptability. In the second level of the system, which operates in the structural space of the plant and performs intelligent functions, the current plant structure is recognized as an element of a finite set of structures defined on the base of expert knowledge. In the first level, which works in the state space of the plant, the control strategy relevant to the current plant structure is picked out from a defined pool and the corresponding control action is calculated. This approach has been realized as a real-time software system intended for control of various fermentation processes.

This paper describes a realtime digital train simulator which was realized to develop real braking devices. The main originalities of this simulator consists in the solutions introduced in order to allow a true simulation of the reality at reasonable price. In particular, in the modelling, we simplified the coupling static characteristics. This made it possible an analytic solution of the motion and coupling equations and therefore a reduction of the computing power requirements. On the other hand, to limit the hardware cost, we adopted a multiprocessor architecture where the simulation processors work in pipeline.

Current distributed control systems, having only control stations corresponding to each batch unit, may make it difficult to achieve proper control of processes, which incorporate simultaneously complex material transfers between units and sequence control over the entire process. In order to solve the above mentioned problem, we tried to introduce a new control station, called coordinator station, into the above processes. For those processes, necessary control functions are hierarchically divided, and this station is dedicated to the higher level function layer, which executes tasks such as coordination between units. This paper describes the basic design concept of batch control systems and function allocation when such a coordinated distributed control system is applied to the above processes. We also give two examples of typical applications to indicate the effectiveness of this control system and the applied design technique. Furthermore, our paper describes the check procedure used to evaluate system's communication performance, which is one of the keys to the effectiveness of this type of control system.

A comprehensive feedforward control algorithm (CFA) is presented for the Oxygen Gas Recovery (OG) system in LD steelmaking process. The control consideration is focussed on removing some problems unsolved in the other published control schemes. The control strategy is combined with implicit self-tuning algorithm (ISTA) and time series forecasting algorithm (TSFA). A special formula which reflects the metallurgical conditions inside vessels has been developed to ensure the efficient behaviour of ISTA and TSFA. Simulation results are also given. The possibility of further developed OG systems with less investment is discussed.

The main stages used in pyrometallurgical processes, to extract copper from its sulfide ores, which aproximately represent 90% of known copper minerals, are smelting and converting. Traditionally, the control of pyrometal1urgical plants has been done by manual control methods supported on operator's experience. This paper presents a description of smelting and converting processes, advances in their automation, functional specifications, and configuration of automation systems for copper smelters. Some introduced functions are data acquisition and processing, alarm messages, historical record and special algorithms for supervisory control. The special algorithms estimate the operational conditions of processes for different charge characteristic. Furthermore, we have estimated the benefits from application of automation systems at these plants.

This paper describes a power plant combustion control system modeling and simulating work. The system is part of an integrated steel making plant, which belongs to Acominas, a company located in Minas Gerais State - Brazil. Three boilers, working in parallel, feed main steam, at 60 kgf/cm 2 - 485 C to a single steam collector drum. The combustion control system was designed in a boiler following strategy to burn, simultaneously, four different fuels. The boiler furnace combustion control system is, as usual, made out of two main control loops, fuel and air, that are interlocked. The combustion control system process was modeled using input-output type models, assuming a linear behavior for the plants in each control loop. The developed model was simulated in an IBM-PC XT compatible microcomputer. The simulation results show that the fuel control loops, under certain restrictions, can work all in automatic. Also, a new air fuel interlock strategy was modeled and showed good results in the simulation. The conclusions of this study are being successfuly implemented in the actual plant.
