Many current approaches to CAD of control systems presume that the process can be represented by a transfer function matrix model of low dimension, e.g. number of inputs and outputs ≤ 5 and model order ≤ 10. For such systems, design methods involving algebraic manipulation of the complete system model are feasible. However, as this paper points out, computational problems are encountered when the design of systems of a size common to industrial processes is approached in this way. Alternative ways of overcoming this problem are suggested, and a proposal for an industrially useful CAD package is outlined. The important features of this are a direct link to a digital nonlinear simulation of the process, use of a geometric analysis to choose measurement subsets in the process, and of a sequential design procedure to minimise computational problems.

This paper seals with the identification experiments carried out in the recent vears by the L.A.N. (Ship Automation Laboratory) for determining a suitable mathematical model of the ship steering dynamics. Some basic concepts concerning the mathematical models are discussed, and the experimental methods as well as the results achieved by sea—trials performed on board of two shies with definitely different characteristics are presented. Such results, obtained after analysing a very large member of fall-scale experiments, confirm the adequacy of an A.R.M.A. model for describing the ship steering process.

Utilization of a self-tuning regulator (STR) for control of top product composition of a binary distillation column has been investigated. Results from simulation studies and experimental evaluation of the STR on a pilot scale column are compared with the performance achieved using conventional proportional plus integral control. The STR resulted in significantly improved control for both servo and regulatory control.
