In this paper the design features of a system for programming the indus-trial robots with dynamic control are described. During specification of the system special attention was given to achieving hardware transportability, simplicity of communication between the user and the system, possibility of active user participation in generation of control algorithms and possibility of implementing the software on a computer with relatively modest characteristics. The software is intended for implementation on a microprocessor-based system and should enable the user to control a robot via specialized programming language RL which incorporates structures for defining the positions and orientations of working points, motion specification and synchronization of the robot with its environment. The paper contains descriptions of the RL language and of the system structure. The main characteristics and advantages of the system as well as questions concerning its realization on existing microprocessors are also discussed.

The tutorial is concerned with digital simulation methods and their application the wide field of process control. Simulation is shown to be a multistage problem solving technique. The basic methodical steps as well as the computational tasks involved are discussed in detail. Emphasize is given to new developments and trends in simulation. A survey on conventional and advanced applications of digital simulation methods to process control concludes the tutorial. The close interrelations between simulation and process control are demonstrated and the necessity for new universal simulation schemes supporting the design and engineering of process control projects from the first idea up to the implementation and operation is emphasized.

This paper reviews the basic features of a high-level, interactive, conversational language called L-A-S (Linear AIgebra and Systems). Particular emphasis is placed upon recent developments of this computer-Aided Design (CAD) language. Unlike the conventional menu-driven approach of many CAD packages, L -A -S provides the user with considerable flexibility in the development and maintenance of linear algebra and control algorithms. L-A-S is both a language and an interpreter. Users or L-A-S write programes while interacting with the Interpreter. Programs may he edited, stored, recalled, and executed with the same or a differernt data set. L-A-S data strunures include matrices, polynomials (continuos or discrete). and matrices of polynomials. In this paper. we briefly review the basics or the L-A-S language. Then. we concentrate on those features of L-A-S which have been added within the last year. These include the Multiple Operator Statement (MOS), L-A-S lNT-delined suhroutines. and the most-reccnt “echo” feature for interaction with the interpreter. Example, accompany the text to illustrate each new feature.

control charting and other statistical quality control techniques have been used by quality control departments in an off-line mode for many years, resulting in significant reductions in process variability. SETPOINT has developed an on-line statistical quality control package which employs these same techniques in real time. This package provides real-time statistical quality control functions such as control charting and alarming.

The paper presents a hierarchical control structure for real time flood control in a multireservoir system. The aim of the structure is to minimize the flood damages which depend on the peak water levels at the most important locations situated far downstream the reservoirs. Water releases form the individual reservoirs are adjusted by the local operators while the objective of a central authority is to modify local performance functions so as to achieve his overall goals. Due to highly uncertain forecasting of future inflows the decision mechanism of a central dispatcher is based upon fast simulation of the system operation under different flow scenarios. An application of the control structure to a case study multireservoir system is shortly described together with some selected simulation results.

The problem of designing linear regulators subject to quadratic cost functions is addressed using multiobjective optimization. Instead of representing conflicting performance measures in a scalar objective function, these measures are treated individually in an attempt to simultaneously optimize the objectives. Although there is no unique solution the approach offers the designer the onportunity of investigating trade-offs in a systematic way. A software package, based on the goal attainment method, is presented and aoplied to design examples.

Conventional control systems of refrigeration plants realized by thermostatic expansion valves often operate unstable, because the valve parameters can not be adapted sufficiently to the process. Therefore a large value of the setpoint of the super heating temperature must be selected in order to avoid liquid strokes to the compressor and this in turn leads to a lower evaporator efficieney. By better control performance of the superheating respectively the location of the liquid-dry-out-point, the evaporator efficiency can be improved. It is shown in this contribution that the control performance becomes much better with an electrical driven expansion valve and an electronic controller. The controller for the research pilot plant was realized by a micro computer. A special type of control structure is realized, which takes into account the type of disturbances found in the open loop. A comparison of the two control methods demonstrates the improvement of the digitally controlled needle valve.

In many transportation systems the problem arises, how to bring several objects from given starting points to desired final positions under predefined, e.g. optimal, conditions. Such a transportation system has been realised by the authors using a relatively complicated model-rail way system. This process is controlled by a computer system consisting of a combination of a supervisory process-computer and a fast microcomputer. The realized process control may be split into the following tasks: a) Updating of train positions and preventing conflicts during operation b) Supervising the step conditions for sequential control of the traffic flow c) On-line computation of executable, to some degree “optimal“ routesunder the restriction of the routes of the other trains d) Executing the computed route by generating the necessary driving commands Wheras task a) and b) are performed by the microprocessor system, task c) and d) are handled bv the supervisory process-computer.
