This paper presents the realization of the control of a two–inputs–two–outputs process by use of both classical PI controllers together with an adaptive decoupling precompensator. The control–law is implemented on a decentralized–microprocessor–based industrial process–control system that has been conceived essentially for fixed–gains regulators. From the difficulties we met in the implementation, we propose some specifications to increase flexibility of programming for industrial–process–control systems.

At the control Laboratory of the Electrical engineering Department of Delft University of Technology much research has been carried out during the last fifteen years in the field of ship control systems, with the main emphasis on automatic steering of ships. This work has resulted In the design of an adaptive autopilot (Van Amerongen, 1984). At the moment research is concentrated on the design of an autopilot which uses the rudder not only for course keeping but for stabilization of the roll angle as well. This paper demonstrates how modern computer-aided design methods may help in designing such a system, especially when analytical methods fail because of non-linearities of the process.

Two recently published studies have considered whether and how robots, which have been designed for manufacturing applications, could find use in mining. The conclusions of both studies, if not identical, are compatible. Automation of mining activities will continue. Robots, at least in the short term, will have little application in mining. However, robotic concepts, both hardware and software, are of considerable relevance to mining automation, and can be anticipated to diffuse gradually into mine environments. In this work a dynamic analysis for the air-gas path of a balanced draft boiler is presented. As is well known, in this part of the plant large and rapid pressure variations can arise in particular situations (for instance in case of fuel trip) which can cause damage to mechanical structures. To achieve a basis of evaluation of these phenomena, a mathematical model of the air-gas system has been developped; the system has been divided into subsystems (fans, air and gas ducts, furnace, air preheaters, dampers) and for each of them a first principles mathematical model has been written. The submodels have then been coupled together to obtain the description of the whole system. This task has been accomplished automatically by means of a suitable “computer aided modelling” code, described in detail in (Marcocci and Spelta, Owing to this modular approach, a wide range of possible plant configurations can be represented. This paper first describes the models of the principal subsystems and the criteria which have been followed to represent with acceptable accuracy the main phenomena involved; a practical application to the air gas path of a real power plant in then presented, and the results obtained in the most critical situations are discussed, with particular attention to operating strategies and control system evaluation.

Recently five conventional batch processes after the cold rolling process have been replaced by the continuous annealing and processing line (C.A.P.L.) for cold rolled sheets of mild steel and high strength steel in order to obtain higher productivity, labor savings, energy savings and the manufacture of new products. In this remarkable process, the strip heat cycle must be mainteined at a target strip temperature from the metallurgical point of view. This paper covers the process computercontrol system of the C.A.P.L., the strip temperature control system which utilizes a Kalman-Bucy filter, and the adaptive control method for improving the control performance of the strip temperature control system.

Electro-hydraulic servo-drives are used advantageously in manufacturing industry because of their great actuating power. The characteristic weak damping of such drives, however, complicates the design of an appropriate control considerably. This paper describes an investigation of the design of linear feedback controls for servo-valve-controlled hydraulic drives. Multiloop controls as well as state feedback controls are tested by means of a nonlinear model of a hydraulic drive and the results of a hybrid simulation study are presented. The aim of the investigations was to explore the dynamic behaviour of state feedback controls and to compare the results with those of conventional cascade feedback controls.

In this paper a decoupled OPF approach using Fletcher's QP metnod is proposed. A Compact, decoupled model with active ana reactive optimization is derived. In p-model, a very sparse scheme is used as the equality constraints. In Q-model, transmission losses are expressed as deviation of swing generation. Consequently botn tne memory requirement and computation time can be significantly reduced. 5 test systems have been used to test tne effectiveness of this approach. It has been snown by test results that tnis UPF approach is faster and requires less memory that NLP method and other QP methods.
