Optimal control of a Tandam Cold Rolling System for Tracking Problem

The optimal control principle and procedure of a tendam cold rolling system for tracking problem have been proposed in this paper for the first time. The state-space description of the tendam cold rolling system for the Cold-Strip Mill of Wuhan Iron and Steel Company is: { y ⇀ k = C x ⇀ k + η ⇀ k . x ⇀ k + 1 = A x ⇀ k + B u ⇀ k + ξ ⇀ k , The optimum performance index of the system for tracking problem is: J min = min E ( 1 2 ∑ k = 0 m e ⇀ ′ k Q e ⇀ k − 1 2 ∑ k = 0 m − 1 u ⇀ ′ k R u ⇀ k ) . The authors have deduced the optimal control of the system for tracking problem as follows u ⇀ k * = − S k ( A y ⇀ k + ε ⇀ k + 1 − y ⇀ ) , the feedback gain matrix SI is given by S k = ( B ′ P k + 1 B − R ) − 1 B ′ P k + 1 , P k satisfies the matrix difference equation P k = P k + 1 − [ ( S k − 1 ) ′ − B ′ ] − 1 R ( S k − 1 − B ) − 1 + Q with terminal condition P km = Q. On the above-mentioned principle of optimal control, an optimal con-tNli procedure of the tendam cold rolling system has been obtained, and a computer simulation has been performed. The results of the simulation are satisfactory.

All existing decentralized control systems make use of different communication techniques between device-subsystems. This impedes the configuration of user systems with components from different sources and requires a common solution for bit serial process data transmission. On the background of industrial requirements two common approaches are presented, discussed and compared.

computer Aided Design of Suboptimal Linear Regulators

A CAD program package has been developed for the design of suboptimal linear regulators. Various controller configuration and performance index options are available and the package adopts a common numerical approach to the solution of these problems. Recent numerical improvements and enhancements are described including the study of sampled-data systems. Three design applications are included. For a helicopter regulation problem output feedback and dynamic compensation techniques are employed with a model-following approach to attempt to match new designs to a desired model response resulting from a linear optimal regulator design. Sensitivity reduction is realized in a gas turbine engine example using output feedback and is further reduced by dynamic compensation. The third example deals with a sampled-data system and involves the design of an output feedback controller for a gas turbine engine with significant time-delay components.

Developments in the field of bulk materials handling using belt conveyors have been marked in recent years particularly by the increase in handling rates. By minimizing the number of transfer points in a conveyor system, dust development and wear of the carrying side of the belting can be reduced, as well as investment and operating costs. It is therefore imperative for belt conveyor systems not only to be built in vertical curves but also in horizontal curves and for them to be fitted with for instance T-T type intermediate belt drives. The optimum design of such systems with load-dependent characteristics can only be determined with the aid of computer simulations. For displaying the computed results, process video systems are favourable which can also be used by the operator of the belt conveyors for on-line monitoring and data evaluation purposes. Particularly inexpensive systems are possible due to the application of control equipment on the drive units, since overloading of the belting under unfavourable operating and load conditions is prevented. Suitable control concepts are developed in computer simulations and the results are compared with those of an uncontrolled system. The realization of high demands on the belt conveyor system is only achievable by the use of such a control. Whether control of drives for achieving a stable equilibrium of the belt is necessary for belt conveyors built in very tight curves results from the simulation computation. The belt tracking parameters for curves such as raising the idler supports and forwards tilting of the idlers are also optimized by computer simulation. A further important application is formed by the predicted computation of emergency strategies, e.g. the breakdown of drive units. It is thus possible to continue operating the system with a reduced flow of material. In practice, computer simulation and control have been used with success.

A Simulation Study on Evaluation of Deployment Strategies for Fire Engines

A simulation model of evaluating deployment strategies for fire engines is introduced in this paper. Expected burned-area was adopted as a criterion. This simulation model was implemented by using the data of Kyoto City. First this simulation model is demonstrated to be valid by comparing the results derived by executing simulations on this model with the actual data of Kyoto City in five years (1974 - 1973). Then, three alternative strategies are compared by this model. From these results, it becomes clear that about 30% reduction of burned-area in one year is expected by an alternative deployment strategy which will be feasible by introducing the computer-aided command and control system of fire engines.

Digital Simulation Methods — A Tutorial

The tutorial is concerned with digital simulation methods and their application the wide field of process control. Simulation is shown to be a multistage problem solving technique. The basic methodical steps as well as the computational tasks involved are discussed in detail. Emphasize is given to new developments and trends in simulation. A survey on conventional and advanced applications of digital simulation methods to process control concludes the tutorial. The close interrelations between simulation and process control are demonstrated and the necessity for new universal simulation schemes supporting the design and engineering of process control projects from the first idea up to the implementation and operation is emphasized.

The structure of the application software will be discussed in both a technical and economical perspective, and assessed with Barry Boehm's development cost estimating formalism. Recent Advances in the L-A-S Software used in CAD of control Systems

This paper reviews the basic features of a high-level, interactive, conversational language called L-A-S (Linear AIgebra and Systems). Particular emphasis is placed upon recent developments of this computer-Aided Design (CAD) language. Unlike the conventional menu-driven approach of many CAD packages, L -A -S provides the user with considerable flexibility in the development and maintenance of linear algebra and control algorithms. L-A-S is both a language and an interpreter. Users or L-A-S write programes while interacting with the Interpreter. Programs may he edited, stored, recalled, and executed with the same or a differernt data set. L-A-S data strunures include matrices, polynomials (continuos or discrete). and matrices of polynomials. In this paper. we briefly review the basics or the L-A-S language. Then. we concentrate on those features of L-A-S which have been added within the last year. These include the Multiple Operator Statement (MOS), L-A-S lNT-delined suhroutines. and the most-reccnt “echo” feature for interaction with the interpreter. Example, accompany the text to illustrate each new feature.

Modern methods for process analysis and for synthesis of control strategies rely on the extensive use of computers. The wide range of algorithms required has to be compiled into comprehensive program packages to ensure their convenient application. The CATPAC software system provides offline support for process analysis and design of control strategies. It enables the control engineer to set up mathematical models of processes, to design control loops on the basis of these models and to simulate the time-behaviour of dynamic systems. CATPAC fulfils the following requirements: - Supply of diverse algorithms and possibility of expansion - Program system-supported storage of computed results - Suitable presentation of input and output data - Dialogue-oriented program flow - Extensive documentation of the package - Portability of the program system.
