control theory has an important role to play in developing new computing systems, especially complicated software systems. control problems that commonly occur in computing systems include regulating service levels, optimizing resources, and rejecting disturbances such as variable workloads. Developing control systems to address these problems involves a number of challenges. The article describes some of the challenges that arise in applying control theory to computing systems.

Over the last few years, there has been considerable success with applying control theory to computing systems. Our experience has been that there are several commonly occurring control problems in computing systems - translating between service oriented units (e.g., response times) and effector (actuator) units (e.g., the maximum number of connected users); optimizing resource usage; regulating service levels to enforce service level agreements; and adapting to disturbances such as changes in workloads. Developing control systems that address these problems involves challenges related to modeling the managed element (plant); handing sensor data that are noisy, incomplete, and inconsistent; dealing with effectors that have complex effects that often do not correspond well to the control objectives; and designing control systems (especially filters, the choice of measured outputs, and time delays).

Prescribed Performance Ship Tracking control With a Novel Predefined-Time Performance Function

How to accurately process and achieve good transient performance in a short period of time is a key consideration factor for the system. A hyperbolic sine function is used to construct a novel predefined-time convergent prescribed performance function. This algorithm introduces a set of new predefined standards for time convergence assessment based on gamma functions and Riemann zeta functions. By integrating performance indicators of speed, stability and efficiency into the design of the prescribed performance function, the performance framework ensures the achievement of establishing a comprehensive performance optimization model. The upper limit of the settling time is studied, and sufficient conditions for achieving predetermined time convergence are established, validated through experiments using unmanned surface vessels.

Optimal Performance Analysis for Networked System with Quantitative control Input Over Feedback Channel

Networked control systems (NCS) have become an emerging and important research area given the rapidly developing network communication technology. Numerous studies in this area concentrate on the stability of control systems, while little has been done on its performance analysis, especially the index of an optimal control system. We fill this gap here by analysing the optimal tracking performance for an NCS that has quantitative control inputs over feedback channels. We design a dual-degree-of-freedom controller along with an optimal control system, by applying the Youla parameterization method based on the time domain and coprime decompositions. The proposed methodology is assessed by numerical simulations. The system's tracking performance is found to be deteriorated by the unstable poles and non-minimum phase zeros of the controlled object, as well as by quantization signal errors. These findings are beneficial for analysing and designing practical control systems.

Resilient distributed control of BESSs and voltage source converter-based microgrids considering switching topologies and non-uniform time-varying delays

In this study, a distributed resilient control (DRC) scheme is proposed for inverter-interfaced autonomous AC microgrids (MGs). Due to unavoidable telecommunication vulnerabilities, time-delays already exist in communication links, and it seriously impresses the stability and performance of the network. Due to this fact, non-uniform time-varying communication delays are considered on the communication links (here, information exchanges between neighboring local controllers of DGs and BESSs). The authors consider a time-varying topology for distributed energy resources to address the uncertainties of communications links, improve flexibility, and enhance the security of the system against cyber-attacks. Stability analysis is characterised based on the Lyapunov-Krasovskii theory, and sufficient conditions for a precise and comprehensive control algorithm are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The provided LMIs yield the upper bound of the time delay, which guarantees the stability of the system. Finally, to evaluate the performance of the control law, offline digital time-domain simulation studies are performed on a test MG system in a MATLAB/Simulink environment, and also the results are compared with previously reported methods.

Automatic recognition and location system for electric vehicle charging port in complex environment

This study proposes an automatic recognition and location system of electric vehicle charging port with application to automatic charging. The system obtains the charging port posture through image processing, and performs the insertion motion in combination with the robot arm to complete the charging gun insertion of the automatic charging link. The framework of the system is mainly divided into three parts, recognition, location and insertion. In the charging port recognition, the convolutional neural network-based method is used, and the recognition success rate is up to 98.9% under the light intensity of 4000 lux;in the location of the charging port, the method of solving the pose based on the circle feature is adopted. The average value of the position error is within 1.4 mm, and the average value of the attitude angle error is within 1.6 degrees, which meets the accuracy requirement of the insertion experiment;in the charging gun insertion, the motion of the robot is planned by interpolation algorithm. The lower limit of the successful insertion is about 135 lux and the upper limit is about 9350 lux.

Demand Learning and Cooperative Deployment of UAV Networks

Unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) as a powerful tool has found its applicability in assisting mobile users to deal with computation-intensive and delaysensitive applications(e.g., edge computing, high-speed Internet access, and local caching). However, deployment of UAV-aided mobile services(UMS) faces challenges due to the UAV limitation in wireless coverage and energy storage. Aware of such physical limitations, a future UMS system should be intelligent enough to self-plan trajectories and best offer computational capabilities to mobile users. There are important issues regarding the UAV-user interaction, UAV-UAV cooperation for sustainable service provision, and dynamic UMS pricing. These networking and resource management issues are largely overlooked in the literature and this article presents intelligent solutions for cooperative UMS deployment and operation. Mobile users' locations are generally private information and changing over time. How to learn on-demand users' truthful location reporting is important for determining optimal UAV deployment in serving all the users fairly. After addressing the truthful UAV-user interaction issue via game theory, we further study the UAV network sustainability for UMS provision by minimizing the energy consumption cost during deployment and seeking UAV-UAV cooperation. Finally, for profit-maximizing purpose, we analyze the cooperative UAVs' deployment, capacity allocation, and dynamic service pricing.

Stabilisation of networked control systems with communication constraints and multiple distributed transmission delays

The stabilisation problem for a class of networked control systems (NCSs) via controller and scheduling protocol co-design scheme is studied. A new discrete-time switched system model is presented to capture the communication constraints and multiple distributed transmission delays effects on the closed-loop NCS. Based on the new model, suffcient conditions for the exponential stability of the closed-loop NCS are derived, and a co-design procedure for both the stabilising controller and the scheduling protocol is presented. Moreover, a new transmission mechanism and a novel compensation scheme are presented to increase the flexibility of the NCS design. The effectiveness of the proposed results is finally demonstrated by an illustrative example.

Using neural networks to optimise gas turbine aero engines

A technique is presented for controlling gas turbine engines that maintains thrust while minimising fuel consumption A neural network is used to model the engine. Fuel, which is one of the inputs to the model, is decremented and the model used to forward propagate the consequences, one of which is, typically, reduced thrust, Error derivatives to restore the thrust are backpropagated through the network and the error derivatives of the inputs to the model are then used to adjust controllable engine parameters to restore thrust, This iterative technique is continued until the optimum operating point is found, Changes to the engine as a result of temperature change and wear are tracked by updating the neural network engine model online.

Application of the harmonic control arrays technique to single-phase stand-alone inverters

This study proposes the adaption of the harmonic control array (HCA) technique to control a single-phase stand-alone inverter system. The HCA method is recently proposed as an efficient scheme to control the systems with periodic references or disturbances. The HCA appropriately adjusts the harmonic components of the control signal to obtain a zero steady-state error. Since the signals and parameters involved in this method are complex valued, a discrete time implementation is presented for applying the method through a digital platform. The design procedure of the controller parameters are also presented by details. To confirm the theoretical achievements, experimental results for the prototype system are presented in this study. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.
