Artificial neural network for modelling of the correlation between lateral acceleration and head movement in a motion sickness study

Motion sickness (MS) usually occurs when travelling in a moving vehicle, and especially experienced by the passengers compared to the driver. The difference in their head movements with respect to the direction of lateral acceleration affects the MS severity level. When experiencing curvature, the passengers normally tilt their head in the same direction as the lateral acceleration, while the driver tilts his/her head against it. This study proposes a correlation model between the lateral acceleration of the vehicle and the head movements of the driver and a passenger via an artificial neural network. Experimental datasets were used in the modelling process. The influence of the number of hidden neurons with respect to the model accuracy has also been investigated. Then, the correlation from the model was expressed as a mathematical equation. This mathematical representation model can be beneficial in the design of vehicle motion control systems in order to mitigate the MS effect.

METHOD OF STORING ROUTE GUIDANCE INFORMATION USING QUADTREES

An electronic route guidance system employing roadside processors will benefit from the provision of a compact method of storing directional information, especially when a large network is involved. This may be particularly relevant where roadside units are periodically downloaded from a central installation. A form of quadtree, the partition tree, offers very efficient data storage together with the ability to support alternative directions for different vehicle types, time periods and other parameters with the minimum use of additional memory. In a network of 40000 nodes, the largest considered, the estimated average size of partition tree is 686 bytes, and the maximum size around 2k bytes. In a main-road-only network, containing 10000 nodes, these figures are approximately halved.

ARTIFICIAL-INTELLIGENCE APPROACH TO LOAD ALLOCATION IN DISTRIBUTION SUBSTATIONS

Based on the set theory and the Prolog programming language, the paper develops methods by which the allocation of loads to the busbars of distribution substations may be determined automatically. Starting from the initial possible allocation of loads to the substation busbar sections, a formulation for load allocation is first developed using set theory. The ‘generate evaluate and test’ technique and the depth-first search method are then applied to the solution-seeking process. The formulation is implemented and recursive search procedures are derived using the Prolog language. The Prolog software aid developed includes a complete solution generator from which all hypothetical solutions are generated, an evaluator which prunes invalid solutions, and a tester which produces feasible solutions by checking the load allocation constraints related to the firm capacity of the distribution substations. An application of the methods developed is given for two 11 kV interconnected substations which include 5 busbar sections and 10 ring loads.

Sliding mode learning based congestion control for DiffServ networks

In this study, a robust sliding mode learning control scheme is proposed to address the congestion control problem in differentiated services (DiffServ) networks. A validated non-linear network model is based on fluid flow theory corresponding to two important services, namely, the premium traffic and the ordinary traffic. The proposed congestion controller is able to efficiently cope with both the physical network resource constraints and unknown time delays associated with networking systems. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Urenco (Capenhurst) Ltd. has been running high-power copper lasers for several years owing to an interest in selective photo-ionisation for commercial enrichment. The main advantages of these lasers as pump sources for this process are their efficiency at high power and their high pulse repetition frequency However, certain load discharge conditions have been found to greatly reduce the lifetimes of expensive laser modulator components and therefore increase the running costs and downtime of the lasers. This article describes the use of multiple coupled neural networks which? trained by humans with the required experience, are first able to identify load conditions likely to result in a reduction in the lifetime of the modulator components and then alter the load conditions to minimise the stress placed on the modulator.

The paper describes the design and implementation of control systems in an instrument for the fatigue testing of springs. A manual control system is used to establish a spring in a condition of mechanical resonance at a chosen amplitude of vibration, and an automatic control system is used to maintain this condition throughout the duration of a fatigue test. The problem of measuring the vibration amplitude is described, and the nature of the problem of controlling a resonant spring is discussed. For automatic control, an algorithm for the simultaneous extremal control of forcing signal frequency and regulatory control of forcing signal amplitude is developed, and implemented by means of a microprocessor. The methods used may be of more general application, particularly in vibration testing, and possible design improvements for such applications are discussed.

The road to plant validation

Effective production requires serviceable unit processes, under stable control with credible sensed data and precise actuation. Validation of these components is not just an aid to safe operation, but can also enhance the availability of the plant. Cost-effective validation uses standard metrics for the intercommunication of results via a network and starts at the sensor and actuator level. In particular, greater availability comes from limp-home features that provide a degree of operability even in the presence of faults. This can be achieved at the device level, by adjusting a loop's PID regulator, by using auxiliary variables and data-fusion, or by the reconfiguration of a model-predictive controller (MPC). Examples are given of self-validating (SEVA) field instruments and the effect of adjusting a control loop using SEVA data. Plant validation is a combination of SEVA devices and of change detection based on the residuals derived from an MPC model.

Active power dynamic interval control based on operation data mining for wind farms to improve regulation performance in AGC

With the real-time changes of wind speed and operating conditions, it is a challenge to fully tap the active power regulation ability and improve the control performance of automatic generation control (AGC) in a wind farm (WF). The essence of tapping the active power regulation ability is to realise the coordination and complementarity of each wind turbine's (WT's) dynamic adjustment performance (DAP). To address this, a novel data mining method is developed to derive the internal relations between WTs' output power and pitch angle, impeller speed and pitch angle during the power adjustment process, and a unified mechanism model is established to describe DAP of WTs. Based on the discovered relationship between WTs' DAP and its operating states, an active power distribution algorithm and a dynamic interval control method are proposed. Then, an active power dynamic interval control strategy that has been implemented using Java script in MyEclipse for WFs is further developed. The control strategy has been tested and applied in a 50MW WF in northwest China. The preliminary results showed that the control strategy has improved the rapidity and accuracy of AGC in the WF.
