The use of robotic welding in industry is well documented. Further automation will involve the use of sensors with feedback to carry out such tasks as seam tracking or weld penetration monitors. The paper describes a seam tracker for TIG welding. It uses a standard black and white television camera to view the light reflected from the components being welded. The light source is a halogen tungsten lamp. High-speed digitisation using a microcomputer enables rapid correction for any misalignment. All the components used are standard, so that a low-cost system may be produced.

A MICROPROCESSOR controlLER FOR AN ACCURATE POSITIONING SYSTEM

This paper describes a microprocessor-based (Zilog Z80) position control system for an X-Y table which is a precision specimen stage in an electron-beam lithographic machine used to define patterns on semiconductor wafers. The controller receives commands which specify the coordinates, on a user specified Cartesian grid, to which the workpiece is to be moved. After checking that the requested position is within the table's movement range the microprocessor rotates and translates these user coordinates into the representation used by the position sensor, a two-axis laser interferometer. This interferometer measures the positions of mirrors, which are mounted on the specimen table, to an accuracy of 79 nm. Coarse positioning of the table is achieved by means of stepper motors which drive a pair of crossed lead screws whilst fine adjustment of the specimen's effective position is provided by applying a small offset to the electron-beam deflection drivers via digital-to-analogue converters. Thus although the table is only near to the required position, the specimen is nevertheless effectively aligned with the working point of the electron-beam. When the table has been placed in the desired position and come to rest, a signal is given to indicate that processing may resume. An operator panel provides for push-button manual control of the drive motors and a liquid crystal display shows the table's position.

The paper discusses the use of digital computers in developing dynamic tests for testing a control system during its actual operation, or for a test rig which simulates the system's working conditions. Usually three levels are required in any successful test scheme: a check-out test to classify the system as faulty or non-faulty, a diagnostic test to locate the parameter or component responsible for the fault and finally an estimation test to establish a quantitative measure for the faulty component before it is repaired or replaced. The scheme is applied in a case study of a throttle control servosystem, where a digital model of the actual system used as a vehicle for the study.

ADAPTIVE MICROPROCESSOR control OF A LINEAR HELICAL RELUCTANCE MOTOR

It has been shown previously that open-loop control, using a dedicated microprocessor, achieves a very satisfactory dynamic and static performance. However, this performance is only valid provided that output inertia and load torque do not *** paper extends the work to closed-loop operation in which a nonlinear sampled-data feedback controller is proposed. It is found that the resulting system resolution is inferior to that achieved with open-loop control and leads to the concept of two-mode control with open-loop control operating at input displacement demands below ±1°, to achieve good resolution. Finally an adaptive controller is implemented to cope with wide variation of load mass of about three times the rotor mass. Optimum dynamic resolution is of the order of ±0.25° (≡ ± 3× 10−3m).

The paper describes the elements of a flexible assembly system which is being constructed to investigate methods of integrating robots within production systems. Also described are the features of ‘intelligent’ interfaces which have been designed to allow robots and machines to be linked, via a local area network, to supervisory computers. The interfaces are based on the ISO model of open-system connection and include MAP data packets so that they offer a standard and transferable solution to the problem of integrating computer-based shop-floor and management functions.

The paper describes work, being undertaken by the Department of Mechanical engineering at Loughborough University of Technology, on the application of sensor-based, intelligent controls for robotic assembly of flexible, knitted components.

In this paper, we describe the YASC high-level silicon compiler which synthesizes compact chip layouts from hierarchical behavioral descriptions. A logic synthesis procedure generates sets of Boolean equations, including multi-phase clocks and any necessary interface logic. A novel technique for layout generation yields cells whose densities approach hand-crafted designs. Two-layer metal NMOS and CMOS technologies are supported, with flexible design rules. In addition to layout synthesis, logic, schematic and graph diagrams are generated directly from a powerful internal data base. The compiler, which runs under the UNIX operating sysrem, including a menu-driven multi-windowing user environment.

A microprocessor-based time optimal control algorithm is presented. The method is based on the bang-bang approach which incorporates an asymmetrical control strategy to allow load disturbance. The implementation is carried out in such a way as to minimise the number of real-time computations. A relationship involving the sampling period, the asymmetrical value and the amplitude disturbance has been developed. The time-response deterioration as a consequence of the asymmetrical control signal is also evaluated. The method has been applied to a second-order process, and experimental results are presented.
