The design of analogue and digital controllers for a gas-turbine-powered, controllable pitch propeller marine propulsion plant, which displays nonminimum phase characteristics, is considered. Rosenbrock's multi-variable system theory is used to guide the development of control schemes that do not aggravate the non-minimum phase problems of the system.

Data-driven sensor fault detection and isolation of nonlinear systems: Deep neural-network Koopman operator

This paper proposes a data-driven sensor fault detection and isolation approach for the general class of nonlinear systems. The proposed method uses deep neural network architecture to obtain an invariant set of basis functions for the Koopman operator to form a linear predictor for a nonlinear system. Then, the obtained Koopman predictor has been used in a geometric framework for sensor fault detection and isolation purposes without relying on a priori knowledge about the underlying dynamics as well as requiring faulty data, leading to a data-driven sensor fault detection and isolation framework for nonlinear systems. Finally, the approach's efficacy is demonstrated using simulation case study on a two-degree of freedom robot arm.

Event-triggered hybrid control based on multi-agent system for microgrids

This study is focused on a multi-agent system-based event-triggered hybrid control for intelligently restructuring the operating mode of an microgrid (MG) to ensure the energy supply with high security, stability and cost effectiveness. Owing to the MG is composed of different types of distributed energy resources, thus it is typical hybrid dynamic network. Considering the complex hybrid behaviours, a hierarchical decentralised coordinated control scheme is firstly constructed based on multi-agent system, then, the hybrid model of the MG is built by using differential hybrid Petri nets. Based on the hybrid models, an event-triggered hybrid control including three kinds of switching controls is constructed by designing multiple enabling functions that can be activated by different triggering conditions, and the interactive coordination among different switching controls is implemented through the intelligent multiple-agent system platform, so that the operating mode of MG can be intelligently restructured in flexible manner according to the changes of operating situation. The validity of proposed control scheme is demonstrated by means of simulation results.

MINIMUM NORM STATE ESTIMATION FOR COMPUTER control OF WATER DISTRIBUTION-SYSTEMS

The paper presents an algorithm for water-system state estimation in presence of gross errors in measurement data. Application of a modulus norm in place of the more usual least-squares criterion for the minimisation of measurement inconsistency is shown to result in a linear programming formulation. A high computational efficiency for the algorithm is obtained by utilisation of both sparsity techniques and some special features of water distribution systems. Test results are included which demonstrate the applicability of the algorithm for online computer-based state estimation.

The simulation at component level of microprocessor systems provides a precise technique for evaluating the design of a system with regards to its requirements specification. The paper describes the use of occam to simulate individual microprocessor components, and presents a method of modelling the behaviour of microprocessor bus systems. The possibility of utilising transputers to provide real-time simulation is discussed.

The paper reviews the derivation of interlock logic and the resultant interlock circuits for conventional double-busbar substations. These methods are then shown to be inadequate when the number of operating constraints on each switch and the degree of network interconnection are increased. A new method of deriving the interlock logic that can be converted directly into hard-wired form is then presented. The application of this method to the Dinorwic pumped storage scheme is given as an example. The ways by which conflicts between safety and operating requirements can be overcome are then described. Finally, the methods by which such complex interlock logic may be checked are discussed and examples given of the application of decision tables to this task.

ARTIFICIAL-INTELLIGENCE APPROACH TO LOAD ALLOCATION IN DISTRIBUTION SUBSTATIONS

Based on the set theory and the Prolog programming language, the paper develops methods by which the allocation of loads to the busbars of distribution substations may be determined automatically. Starting from the initial possible allocation of loads to the substation busbar sections, a formulation for load allocation is first developed using set theory. The ‘generate evaluate and test’ technique and the depth-first search method are then applied to the solution-seeking process. The formulation is implemented and recursive search procedures are derived using the Prolog language. The Prolog software aid developed includes a complete solution generator from which all hypothetical solutions are generated, an evaluator which prunes invalid solutions, and a tester which produces feasible solutions by checking the load allocation constraints related to the firm capacity of the distribution substations. An application of the methods developed is given for two 11 kV interconnected substations which include 5 busbar sections and 10 ring loads.

METHOD OF STORING ROUTE GUIDANCE INFORMATION USING QUADTREES

An electronic route guidance system employing roadside processors will benefit from the provision of a compact method of storing directional information, especially when a large network is involved. This may be particularly relevant where roadside units are periodically downloaded from a central installation. A form of quadtree, the partition tree, offers very efficient data storage together with the ability to support alternative directions for different vehicle types, time periods and other parameters with the minimum use of additional memory. In a network of 40000 nodes, the largest considered, the estimated average size of partition tree is 686 bytes, and the maximum size around 2k bytes. In a main-road-only network, containing 10000 nodes, these figures are approximately halved.

Autonomous reluctance generator

A single-phase autonomous reluctance generator is analysed as an oscillator with time varying parameters. It is shown that the reluctance generator can be modelled by the parametric Hill's equation. The necessary condition for generating AC output power is obtained by using different methods of analysis. Furthermore. when the inductance varies as a square wave: using a piecewise method solves the RG differential equation in an exact manner. In this case, the RG could be driven at a different rotor velocity to elicit the same resonant current and voltage frequency. The analysis is verified by experimental and simulation results.

Inexact Newton-Kantorovich Methods for Constrained Nonlinear Model Predictive control

In this paper, we consider Newton-Kantorovich type methods for solving control-constrained optimal control problems that appear in model predictive control. Conditions for convergence are established for an inexact version of the Newton-Kantorovich method applied to variational inequalities. Based on these results, two groups of algorithms are proposed to solve the optimality system. The first group includes exact and inexact Newton and Newton-Kantorovich implementations of the sequential quadratic programming. In the second group, exact and inexact Newton and Newton-Kantorovich methods are developed for solving a nonsmooth normal map equation equivalent to the optimality system. Numerical simulations featuring examples from the aerospace and automotive domain are presented, which show that inexact Newton-Kantorovich type methods can achieve significant reduction of the computational time.
