A computational control implementation environment for automated manufacturing systems

This paper presents a computational environment as a tool for supporting the implementation of control coding of an automated manufacturing system. The proposed environment considers a cyclic three-stage control development - modelling, synthesis and implementation - until the real system accomplishes the required specification, resulting in the automated and integrated manufacturing system. The research details the three stages and describes the steps executed for each one. The mathematical formalism used in this work is also presented, as a basis for control implementation. The implementation environment is proposed in order to validate the control structure of this formalism and to allow a progressive integration of control hardware and software. To submit to a test and validate the proposal environment, two experiments are performed, in two different manufacturing systems. Thus, it is demanded that the control system can be reconfigurable in a fast and reliable way.

Mechatronic system design includes a combination of different engineering disciplines. A common approach in design of mechatronic systems is based on a sequential method, where different disciplines are treated and designed separately. This paper extends earlier work on integrated physical and control design optimization with integrating an additional aspect of the corresponding embedded control system implementation. Our previous publications describe integrated design optimization through a few specific use cases but the impact of embedded control implementation on the structural design of the systems is neglected. In this paper, the approach is extended to cover discussions on control implementation and its effect on the physical dimensioning and vice versa. A multi-objective optimization approach is implemented and tested on a mechatronic system case study consisting of a DC-motor, a planetary gear, a flexible shaft, an embedded controller and a load. The couplings between the properties of different engineering domains are studied and highlighted. The presented approach which is aimed for early phases of design, considers the integration of three engineering disciplines in one design framework which so far has been missing.

The horizontal swivel method used in bridge construction can avoid the effect to operation and safety, when we need to cross the existing railway, highway, bridge and arterial traffic road. This is advantaged than other construction methods. Through the horizontal swivel of the T-structure bridge of LiMin road, we propose the corresponding requirements and measures for the construction process, structural safety and construction control, at the same time, the difference between the brick wall and sand box for temporary locking is analyzed. According to accurate swivel test data and reasonable control implementation technology, the beam is accurately swiveled to the design position;this can be used as experience in future similar construction.

In recent years, the growth of renewable energy production has encouraged the development of new technologies, such as High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) networks, that enhance the integration of such energy sources to power transmission grids. However, this type of technology introduces new challenges in the way power transmission systems are controlled and operated, as faster and more complex control strategies will be needed in a domain which nowadays relies heavily on human decisions. In this context, Discrete Event Systems (DES) modeling and Supervisory control Theory (SCT) are powerful tools for the development of a supervisory control to be deployed in the grid. This paper presents an application of the SCT to HVDC grids and proposes an implementation method for the resulting supervisors. The proposed method is capable of integrating decentralized and discrete-event controllers that interact with the continuous-time physical system. The language chosen for the implementation is C code, as it can be easily incorporated in power system simulation software, such as EMTP-RV. The method is validated by the simulation of the start-up of a point-to-point link in the EMTP-RV software.

Different systems are recently developed to obtain effective positioning at nanometer scale with increased working ranges. For this purpose, a two-dimensional nanopositioning platform (NanoPla) has been design and manufactured. To assure the demanding metrological performance the drive and control system is being defined and validated. Based on four home-made linear motors as actuators, this work is focused on the study of the control-loop for 1D-and 2D-cases with the aim of the preliminary modelling and posterior implementation. The different required blocks are presented and an initial controller solution is proposed to achieve the established positioning requests. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

A 2D-platform stage able to obtain an effective metrological positioning with nanometer resolution and long working range (50 x 50 mm²) is on development at the University of Zaragoza. The 2D stage has already been designed, manufactured and assembled. The movement of the platform is performed by four custom-made linear motors, and mirror laser interferometers work as positioning sensors in XYRz degrees of freedom. The work here presented focuses on the hardware implementation of the motor control, for one actuator on a 1D linear stage. The developed control strategy acts on three-phase PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) signals and a feedback is provided by measuring the phase currents. As a preliminary solution, a sensorless algorithm substitutes the positioning sensor before implementing the laser interferometers. © 2017 The Author(s)

This paper analyzes and investigates the effect of the control strategies on the virtual output impedance of Voltage sourced converter system (VSC-based), namely;stationary frame (alpha beta-frame) control based and rotating frame (dq-frame) control based. The obtained equivalent output impedance is then used to analyze the stability of such a system. It is found that the modeling and implementation has significant impact on the real part of input impedance;wherein with alpha beta-frame a positive resistance is achieved in all the frequency ranges while in dq-frame a negative resistance at low frequency region appears. However, alpha beta-frame causes instability issue as the grid impedance increases while dq-frame maintains the stability under the same gird conditions.

We address the problem of synthesising real-time embedded controllers taking into account constraints deriving from the implementation platform, thus exploring the relation between the processor's time (or "attention") devoted to different control tasks and the overall robustness of the resulting design. Assuming a time-triggered model of computation for tasks controlling a set of independent systems and a real-time preemptive scheduling policy managing a single CPU processor board, we deal with two problems: 1) deciding whether a performance specification can be attained on a candidate platform, 2) optimising performance on a platform. The considered performance metric is the minimum stability radius attained over the different feedback loops.

Real-time active control verification via a structural simulator

Verification of active control algorithms prior to their implementation to real structures has always been a time-consuming and costly process. At the minimum, they need to be examined through analytical simulation. Laboratory testing using a scaled-down model on a shaking table or in a wind tunnel is also often necessary. This investment in experimental hardware and inherent inaccuracies in experimental set-up or modeling can be a major obstacle in structural control implementation. In this paper, an alternative real-time verification procedure via a simulator is proposed. In this procedure. the control strategy is implemented inside a dedicated PC controller with an independent Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to calculate the required control force. The DSP performs the function of data acquisition through communication with an Analog to Digital Converter (AID) and a Digital to Analog Converter (D/A). Another PC structural simulator with a similar dedicated hardware is constructed to emulate the real-time response of a theoretic structure with the Hybrid/Active Mass Damper (HMD/AMD) in order to verify the real-time control effect. The integrated system is dedicated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed digital control algorithm and to provide also a preimplementation testing base to test the functions required for practical utilization.
