The development of a low cost and intelligent swarm of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) is the long term goal of this research. Such a swarm of AUVs could be used, for example, for locating submarine sources of interest, such as dumped radioactive waste or ammunition. This is a difficult problem for direct search algorithms, because in large areas of the search space, gradient information is not available. The overall search strategy used in the work is based on particle swarm optimisation (PSO). The number of AUVs here is small due to costs and availability. The performance of PSO depends on the right choice of control parameters. Therefore this paper presents an empirical study of the effects of different search parameter settings on the performance of PSO, used with a swarm of three AUVs in a dynamic environment. A simulation of submarine groundwater discharge, based on Cellular Automata, is used as a dynamic test environment. It was shown in this research that PSO in this configuration is robust against control parameter settings.

Imperialistic competitive algorithm (ICA) is a recently developed meta-heuristic technique that has been successfully implemented for solving various complex optimization problems. Like other meta- heuristic techniques, performance of ICA predominantly depends on the selection of control parameters. However, optimal setting of control parameter for ICA is problem specific. In this paper, a study of control parameter setting for an imperialistic competitive algorithm based economic emission dispatch problem with valve point loading and transmission loss is carried out. Economic emission dispatch problem was formulated by taking equality constraint on power balance and inequality constraint on generator capacity limit and losses into consideration. Proposed approach was examined on a ten generating unit system and effects of parametric variation on results are presented. Analysis of obtained results reveals that an improper selection of algorithm control parameter might lead to premature convergence and poor computation efficiency.

Economic emission dispatch problem (EED) has gained attention of power system researchers for many years. With the deregulation of electricity market and strict environmental norms and regulations, there exists a further scope to revisit the problem. Actually the Economic emission dispatch minimizes both the fuel cost as well as emission from fossil fuel fired power plants under several equality and inequality constraints. A Modified Imperialistic Competition Algorithm (MICA) technique is proposed for solving EED problem and a fuzzy set theory approach is implemented for selecting the best compromise solution out of a set of non-dominated Pareto solutions. Proposed approach is verified on the standard 30-bus 6-generator test system. Equality constraints on power balance and inequality constraints on generation capacity limit are taken into consideration. The quality of solution by proposed algorithm is found to be superior to many other multi-objective techniques.
