PaDE: An enhanced Differential Evolution algorithm with novel control parameter adaptation schemes for numerical optimization

Differential Evolution (DE) variants have been proven to be excellent algorithms in tackling real parameter single objective numerical optimization because they have secured the front ranks of these competitions for many years. Nevertheless, there are still some weaknesses, e.g. (1) improper control parameter adaptation schemes;and (2) defect in a given mutation strategy., existing in some state-of-the-art DE variants, which may result in slow convergence and worse optimization performance. Therefore, in this paper, a novel Parameter adaptive DE (PaDE) is proposed to tackle the above mentioned weaknesses and the PaDE algorithm has three advantages: (1) A grouping strategy with novel adaptation scheme for Cr is proposed to tackle the improper adaptation schemes of Cr in some state-of-the-art DE variants;(2) A novel parabolic population size reduction scheme is proposed to tackle the weakness in linear population size reduction scheme;(3) An enhanced time stamp based mutation strategy is proposed to tackle the weakness in a former mutation strategy. The novel PaDE algorithm is verified under 58 benchmarks from two Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC) Competition test suites on real-parameter single objective numerical optimization, and experiment results show that the proposed PaDE algorithm is competitive with the other state-of-the-art DE variants. An optimal routing strategy for transport networks with minimal transmission cost and high network capacity

This paper proposes a routing strategy by minimizing an integrated transmission cost including route cost, distance cost, and traffic pressure cost, which are quantified based on the available transportation routes and travel distance of edges, and the degree of nodes, respectively. In the routing strategy, an arriving rate function is proposed based on the characteristics of heterogeneous traffic demand of nodes, and two parameters, congestion parameter and cost importance parameter are proposed to evaluate the importance of different transmission costs. By tuning the parameters, an optimal routing strategy with high capacity is obtained for different applications. The numerical results on theoretical networks (Watts-Strogatz small-world network and Barabasi-Albert network) and real networks (the bus and metro network in Beijing, China) show that the generated new routing strategy can significantly improve the system capacity and operation efficiency. Moreover, the significance of the proposed parameters on evaluating the importance of different transmission costs is precisely proved based on the experimental results, which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed routing strategy. A new hybrid method for two dimensional nonlinear variable order fractional optimal control problems

This paper presents an efficient operational matrix method for two dimensional nonlinear variable order fractional optimal control problems (2D-NVOFOCP). These problems include the nonlinear variable order fractional dynamical systems (NVOFDS) described by partial differential equations such as the diffusion-wave, convection-diffusion-wave and Klein-Gordon equations. The variable order fractional derivative is defined in the Caputo type. The proposed hybrid method is based on the transcendental Bernstein series (TBS) and the generalized shifted Chebyshev polynomials (GSCP). The new operational matrices of derivatives are generated for the mentioned polynomials. The state and control functions are expressed by the TBS and GSCP with free coefficients and control parameters. These expansions are substituted in the performance index and the resulting operational matrices are employed to extract algebraic equations from the approximated NVOFDS. The constrained extremum is obtained by coupling the algebraic constraints from the dynamical system and the initial and boundary conditions with the algebraic equation extracted from the performance index by means of a set of unknown Lagrange multipliers. The convergence analysis is discussed and several numerical experiments illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

Generalized Bernoulli-Laguerre Polynomials: Applications in Coupled Nonlinear System of Variable-Order Fractional PDEs

In this paper, we introduce a general class of coupled nonlinear systems of variable-order fractional partial differential equations (GCNSV-FPDEs) with initial and boundary conditions. We propose a hybrid method based on new generalized Bernoulli-Laguerre polynomials (GB-LPs) for solving GCNSV-FPDEs. The concept of variable-order fractional derivatives (V-FDs) is employed in the Caputo type. We extract the operational matrices (OMs) of classical and V-FDs of GB-LPs. By utilizing GB-LPs, OMs, and the Lagrange multipliers method, we transform the given GCNSV-FPDE into a system of algebraic equations to be solved. The proposed method yields satisfactory results even with a small number of GB-LPs. We provide a full verification of the method's convergence, and two examples are included to demonstrate its validity and applicability.

Parameter study of differential evolution based optimal scheduling of hydrothermal systems

Differential evolution (DE) has been proved to be a powerful evolutionary algorithm for global optimization in many real-world problems. The performance of evolutionary algorithms is heavily dependent on the setting of control parameters. Proper selection of the control parameters is very important for the success of the algorithm. Optimal settings of control parameters of differential evolution depend on the specific problem under consideration. In this paper, a study of control parameters on differential evolution based optimal scheduling of hydrothermal systems with cascaded reservoir is conducted empirically. A multi-reservoir cascaded hydrothermal system with non-linear relationship between water discharge rate, power generation and net head is considered for the present study. The water transport delay between connected reservoirs is also taken into account. Several equality and non-equality constraints on thermal plants such as maximum and minimum generation capacity and effect of valve point loading are also considered. The results of the effect of the variations of the parameters are presented systematically and it is observed that the search algorithm may fail in finding the optimal value if the parameter selection is not done with proper attention. Ammonium load determines the performance of a continuous nitritation process and the related microbial communities even under excesses of O2 supply

Background Partial oxidation of ammonium to nitrite, process known as nitritation, has important advantages over complete nitrification, including energy savings due to a reduced aeration, a lower organic carbon requirement for denitrification, a reduced production of sludge, and the potential use of nitrite in anammox and anoxic biogas purification technologies. Dissolved O-2 (DO) concentration commonly has been regarded as the most important parameter to be controlled for achieving a successful nitritation process. Results The present study showed that setting average DO values below 1 g O-2 m(-3) was insufficient to achieve a high and stable nitritation at ammonium loading rates between 2.5 to 5.1 g N-NH4+ m(-3) h(-1). Under these conditions, the predominance of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) resulted in ammonium oxidation selectivity to nitrite from 5.2 +/- 3.6% to 42.8 +/- 21%. Increasing the ammonium loading to 10.1 gN-NH4+ m(-3) h(-1) together with an average DO value of 0.9 +/- 0.6 gO(2) m(-3) resulted in an ammonium oxidation efficiency of 94 +/- 1.1% and ammonium oxidation selectivity to nitrite >90%. Conclusion Continuous nitritation was achieved in a single reactor provided with an easy-to-implement aeration strategy. The ammonium loading rate was the most important parameter to be controlled, which inhibited NOB above a threshold value. NOB inhibition was mediated mainly by free nitrous acid, and by free ammonia to a lesser extent. Increasing the ammonium loading rate led to an enrichment of ammonium oxidizing bacteria of the Nitrosomonas genus. (c) 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

An Automatic control Parameter Tuning Method for Differential Evolution

Differential Evolution (DE) is an evolutionary algorithm that has shown excellent ability for solving global optimization problems over continuous spaces. DE has a few control parameters that must be set by the user. The ability of DE depends on these control parameters, and in many cases, trial-and-error processes are required for finding suitable values. This paper proposes a method for tuning the DE control parameters automatically. The control parameters are tuned within the DE search process. When this method is used, the finding of appropriate control parameter values by trial and error is not required. To evaluate its performance, the proposed method was applied to nine benchmark function optimization problems. The results indicate that the proposed method achieved 100% success in solving optimization problems without a major increase in the number of generation's required for finding the optimum solution. Bifurcation in granular materials: An attempt for a unified framework

Sudden collapse mechanisms strictly inside the Mohr-Coulomb plastic limit condition have been observed in granular materials in the laboratory as well as in the field. The purpose of this paper is to show that the theoretical framework of loss of sustainability is convenient to describe such mechanisms. In this context, the notions of both loading and response variables, which characterize the loading path applied to the specimen considered and its response path, are fundamental. Moreover, by investigating the relation between loading and response parameters, it is established that this framework also embeds the notions of loss of constitutive uniqueness and loss of controllability. Therefore, a unified approach is attempted. Finally, by highlighting the basic role played by the loading parameters, the vanishing of the second-order work is shown to be a proper criterion to detect the occurrence of a bifurcation from a quasi-static regime to a dynamic regime leading to the collapse of the material. Neuro-adaptive fixed-time trajectory tracking control for human-in-the-loop teleoperation with mixed communication delays

The fixed-time master-slave trajectory tracking control problem of the human-in-the-loop teleoperation systems with mixed communication delays (including time-varying delays and random delays), parametric uncertainties, and external disturbances is discussed in this study. Based on the non-singular terminal sliding mode control technique, a novel neuro-adaptive fixed-time control algorithm is designed to solve the above-mentioned problem. Moreover, to improve the steady-state performance of the presented control algorithm, the combination of the radial basis function neural networks, parametric adaptive laws and fixed-time control method is newly-designed and used to reduce the effects of parametric uncertainties and external disturbances. By employing the Lyapunov argument, the sufficient conditions on the control parameters for guaranteeing the fixed-time stability of the controlled teleoperation system are derived. Besides, the authors also present the upper bound of the settling time and prove that it is independent of the initial condition. Finally, several simulation examples are performed to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results.
