SENSITIVITY-REDUCED OPTIMAL DISCRETE LINEAR REGULATOR WITH PRESCRIBED CLOSED-LOOP EIGENVALUES

A method is proposed for the design of constant-gain optimal feedback control laws for discrete-time systems, which reduce trajectory sensitivity to small system parameter variations and ensure the closed-loop eigenvalues at the prescribed locations. The selected performance index is of standard linear regulator type, modified to include a quadratic sensitivity term. An efficient computational procedure, based on direct cost optimisation and using a gradient-type algorithm, is also reported. A case study of a boiling-water reactor power plant has been presented to illustrate the application of the design procedure.

Robust control for induction servo motor drive

The design and properties of a robust control system for an induction servo motor drive to track periodic commands are addressed. The presentation of robust control for the indirect field-oriented induction servo motor drive system is divided into three parts: state feedback controller, feed-forward controller and disturbance controller. The adaptation laws of control gains in the robust control system are derived in terms of the Lyapunov stability theorem. In the whole design process, prior knowledge of the controlled plant is not necessary and the asymptotic stability of the control system can be guaranteed. It has learning ability similar to intelligent control, but with a simpler control framework. With the proposed robust control system, the drive possesses the advantages of good tracking control performance and robustness to uncertainties. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified by both the simulated and experimental results.

Adaptive speed controller design for a permanent magnet synchronous motor

An adaptive speed controller is proposed for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The proposed adaptive speed regulator is insensitive to model parameter and load torque variations because it does not need any accurate knowledge about the motor parameter and load torque values. The stability of the proposed control system is also proven. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive speed controller under the uncertainties such as motor parameter and load torque variations using a prototype PMSM drive system.

Adaptive dual controller for systems with unmodelled effects

An adaptive pole placement controller with dual modification is applied to a dynamic plant which is described by an unknown nonlinear model. Stability of the suggested dual controller, applied together with a robust adaptation scheme, is proved for this system. It is demonstrated that after the insertion of the dual controller, the robust adaptive system remains stable. However, some known assumptions about the unmodelled residuals of the nonlinear plant model should be modified. It is also demonstrated that in the case of no residuals in the plant model, the closed-loop system converges to the model defined by the desired pole positioning. The derived controller is applied to real-time control of hydraulic drive.

Non-linear sliding mode surfaces for a class of underactuated mechanical systems

This study presents a new non-linear sliding surface to control a class of non-minimum phase underactuated mechanical systems, taking into account uncertainties in their physical parameters. The non-linear surface is designed through a fictitious output, which provides the minimum-phase property and allows to prove stability using Lyapunov theory. The non-linear surface is based on the fictitious output and augmented with a non-linear external controller designed using the Lyapunov theory. The present approach assures exponential stability of the equilibrium point and robust stability to parametric uncertainties, avoiding the appearance of non-desired phenomena, as limit cycles. Two pendulum-like examples inside the class are thoroughly analysed and solved, that is, the pendulum on a cart and the inertia wheel pendulum. Performance, time response and parametric robustness are shown through simulations.

In the design of dynamical systems, such as automatic regulators and electrical networks, a system is required to satisfy constraints and specifications, which can be represented by a set of simultaneous algebraic inequalities. It is shown how typical design problems lead naturally to the formulation of a set of inequalities, any solution of which characterises an acceptable system. A numerical process for obtaining a solution of a system of inequalities is developed. Applications of the method of inequalities to the design of automatic control systems are discussed. Specific control problems, in single-variable and multivariable systems, are considered, and designs, obtained by the method of inequalities, are compared with those obtained by standard methods of Nyquist, root locus and optimisation.

Event-triggered scheduling for pinning networks of coupled dynamical systems under stochastically fast switching

This paper studies the stability of linearly coupled dynamical systems with feedback pinning algorithms. Here, both the coupling matrix and the set of pinned-nodes are time-varying, induced by stochastic processes. Event-triggered rules are employed in both diffusion coupling and feedback pinning terms, which can reduce the actuation and communication loads. Two event-triggered rules are proposed and it is proved that if the system with time-average couplings and pinning gains is stable and the switching of coupling matrices and pinned nodes is sufficiently fast, the proposed event-triggered strategies can stabilize the system. Moreover, Zeno behaviour can be excluded for all nodes. Numerical examples of networks of mobile agents are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

Implementation of a single-phase three-leg AC/AC converter with neutral-point diode-clamped scheme

A single-phase AC/AC converter with neutral-point diode-clamped scheme is proposed. A three-leg configuration, which has a common leg between the AC/DC and DC/AC converters, is adopted to reduce the number of switching devices compared with the conventional three-level AC/AC system. The common leg is operated in both rectifier and inverter modes. The rectifier is controlled to have a constant DC-link voltage and unity input power factor. The AC side of the rectifier has a three-level PWM waveform to reduce the voltage harmonics compared with that of a two-level scheme. The hysteresis current control scheme is used in the inner control loop to track the line current command. A proportional-integral (PI) control is adopted in the outer control loop to maintain the constant DC-link voltage. In the inverter side, a sinusoidal output voltage is generated to provide a stable and clean source voltage to the critical load. The fixed-frequency current controller is adopted to generate the properly PWM waveform. The output voltage is independent of the mains voltage to provide a stable AC power source. The neutral-point diodeclamped circuit configuration is used to reduce the voltage stress of power devices. The system model and control algorithm are described and analysed. Simulations and experimental results based on a laboratory prototype were performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategies.

This paper is concerned with the guaranteed cost control problem of a class of linear discrete-time switched systems with parametric uncertainties. Both state-based and dynamic output-based robust stabilization problems are investigated by using mode-dependent dwell time technique. Different from the existing results, here, the designed controllers are both mode-dependent and quasi-time-dependent, which are less conservative. On the basis of the designed quasi-time-dependent Lyapunov functions, robust stabilization criteria are presented for the system under consideration. The solvable conditions are formulated as linear matrix inequalities, which are thus easy to be solved. Some comparative simulations are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Detecting and isolating false data injection attacks on electric vehicles of smart grids using distributed functional observers

This paper considers the problem of false data injection attacks (FDIAs) on load frequency control of interconnected smart grids (ISGs) with delayed electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energies. By intruding incorrect information, unauthorised users can corrupt the system information leading to degradation in the performance and disruptions of ISGs. In this paper, a model of ISGs subject to FDIAs in aggregator of EVs and power plants is first presented. This mathematical representation comprises dynamic interactions of power plants, delayed EVs, renewable energies and FDIAs on both system states and outputs. Based on recent advanced techniques on functional observers and matrix inequalities for time-delay systems, then a new distributed functional observers based scheme is developed to realise the tasks of detecting and isolating FDIAs. Also, an effective procedure presented in tractable linear matrix inequalitiesis build with an optimisation process for the synthesis of the detector. The proposed detector is distributed, of reduced order, avoids the risk of centralised malicious incidents, therefore easy for implementation and monitoring tasks. The stability of ISGs and contribution of EVs subject to FDIAs are also discussed. Comprehensive simulations are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method by using three-area ISGs.
