Optimal design and testing of a digital dual-stage actuator servo system

This study addresses an optimal dual-stage actuator (DSA) servo design in a discrete-time domain. Maximising the cooperation of a voice coil motor and a microactuator (MA), the authors design a discrete-time fixed-order DSA control system. The controller is applied to a disk drive with DSAs, and experimental results demonstrate remarkable improvements in track seek in the MA range as well as in track follow. It is shown that the optimal control system, with the interaction between the two actuators being minimised, delivers exemplary responses in a disk drive test, despite its minimum controller order.

Internal model control for the AMB high-speed flywheel rotor system based on modal separation and inverse system method

To eliminate the influence of gyroscopic effect on system stability and to improve the control performances for the active magnetic bearing (AMB) high-speed flywheel rotor system, a novel control strategy based on the modal separation and inverse system method is proposed. The translational motions and rotational motions of the AMB flywheel rotor system are firstly decoupled by the modal separation, then the rotational motions are decoupled by the inverse system method, so that the AMB flywheel rotor system, which is a multivariable and strong coupled system, is decoupled into four subsystems. Finally, the subsystems are regulated by four two-degrees-of-freedom (2-DOF) internal model controllers, respectively. Furthermore, the stability, tracking and robustness of the novel control strategy are analysed theoretically, and its effectiveness on vibration control of the AMB high-speed flywheel rotor system is further investigated by simulations and experiments. The results show that the novel control strategy can achieve stable suspension and effectively suppress the vibration of the AMB high-speed flywheel rotor system from static state to 24,000 rpm, with the advantages of high stability, strong robustness, and good performances of tracking and disturbance rejection simultaneously.

This study presents a three-phase tri-state buck-boost integrated inverter suitable for stand-alone and/or grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) energy applications. The usage of the special features of the tri-state operation coupled with a modified space vector modulation allows the inverter to present a remarkable degree of freedom for the controllers' design, that is, input and output can be independently controlled. As the input can be autonomously controlled, this converter is very attractive for interfacing renewable energy sources as PV panels, once the main duty cycle D-1 controls the maximum power point tracking and the second duty cycle D-2 is responsible to feed the output. It should be pointed out that there are no power electrolytic capacitors in this integrated inverter, which results in a major advantage for the structure working life and it is the first time in the literature that this inverter is used to feed power into the grid. Throughout this study the system is described, the modulation and control schemes are presented and interesting experimental results are available in order to confirm the outstanding features of this proposal.

Detecting and isolating false data injection attacks on electric vehicles of smart grids using distributed functional observers

This paper considers the problem of false data injection attacks (FDIAs) on load frequency control of interconnected smart grids (ISGs) with delayed electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energies. By intruding incorrect information, unauthorised users can corrupt the system information leading to degradation in the performance and disruptions of ISGs. In this paper, a model of ISGs subject to FDIAs in aggregator of EVs and power plants is first presented. This mathematical representation comprises dynamic interactions of power plants, delayed EVs, renewable energies and FDIAs on both system states and outputs. Based on recent advanced techniques on functional observers and matrix inequalities for time-delay systems, then a new distributed functional observers based scheme is developed to realise the tasks of detecting and isolating FDIAs. Also, an effective procedure presented in tractable linear matrix inequalitiesis build with an optimisation process for the synthesis of the detector. The proposed detector is distributed, of reduced order, avoids the risk of centralised malicious incidents, therefore easy for implementation and monitoring tasks. The stability of ISGs and contribution of EVs subject to FDIAs are also discussed. Comprehensive simulations are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method by using three-area ISGs.

New controller design method for continuous-time systems with state saturation

This article studies the problems of stability analysis and controllers design for continuous-time linear systems with the consideration of full state saturation as well as partial state saturation. Owing to the difficulty and complexity in the controller design under state saturation, a new and tractable system is constructed, and it is shown that the constructed system is with the same domain of attraction as the original system. Based on this property, an linear matrix inequality (LMI) based method is presented for estimating the attraction domain of the origin for the new constructed system with state saturation. In addition, an algorithm is developed for designing dynamic output-feedback controllers, which guarantee that the attraction domain of the origin for the closed-loop system is as 'large' as possible. An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the design method.

Practical and robust control for precision motion: AR-CM NCTF control of a linear motion mechanism with friction characteristics

This study presents the framework of the acceleration reference continuous motion nominal characteristic trajectory following (AR-CM NCTF) control system, and its effectiveness in a linear motion mechanism with friction characteristics is experimentally demonstrated in comparison with the other control methods. The overall control system comprises the feedback-loops for velocity reference and acceleration reference following controls. The AR-CM NCTF control is an enhanced continuous motion NCTF (CM NCTF) control that has been proposed for high-precision motion. It has the same structure as the CM NCTF controller with additional elements for high-precision motion. The design procedure of the AR-CM NCTF controller remains easy and is independent of friction characteristics. The usefulness and advantages of the proposed controller are shown in the experimental studies. Besides, this study also highlights the robustness of the AR-CM NCTF controller by examining its performances in point-to-point and tracking motions in the presence of mass and disturbance force variations. In the robust performance, the AR-CM NCTF controller is compared with two types of proportional derivative control systems with disturbance observers (PDDOs). The comparative experimental results illustrate that the AR-CM NCTF controller shows the higher motion performances the higher robustness to plant parameter variations than the PDDO controllers.

Robust digital control of a wind turbine for rated-speed and variable-power operation regime

The design of a double-loop robust digital control algorithm for a wind turbine (WT) containing a doubly-fed induction machine is presented. The operating zone considered is that obtained when the rotational speed is limited to its rated value and the generated electricity has not reached its corresponding rated value. It is not particularly easy to find descriptions of controllers for this working zone in the existing literature. The rotational sampling effect may produce drive-train torque oscillations when a WT operates at constant speed. Consequently, its control system, which consists of two levels of control loops, has to be able to address these oscillations and be able to minimise flicker emission and dynamical loads in the drive train. These specifications, along with the robustness of the synthesised controller, lead to a reduced cost for the generated electricity and to a higher power quality, compared to those obtained using more classical WT control strategies that do not account for the peculiarities of the considered operation zone. The inner control loops govern the machine electromagnetic torque. The outer control-loop is synthesised using the discrete pole-placement with sensitivity function shaping method, to keep the rotational speed at its rated value and to reduce electromagnetic torque oscillations. The designed and synthesised control algorithms are tested on a simulation model validated using field data. Simulation results show that the proposed regulator reduces both flicker emission and dynamical drive-train loads, when compared to a classical PI regulator tuned to show an identical cut-off frequency and integral action.

Frequency domain properties of reset systems with multiple reset anticipations

A reset controller is a controller that operates most of the time as a linear system, except when some condition holds. The typical reset condition is the zero crossing of the tracking error signal, e(t) = 0. At this moment, the controller performs a zero resetting action on its state. It has been shown that reset control is able to overcome fundamental linear limitations. This article studies, within a frequency-domain framework, the generalisation of reset control systems based on including some anticipation on the reset condition. This has a favourable phase lead effect. The paper discusses different reset anticipations schemes, including multiple reset actions in the same period, computes Fourier harmonics and describing function of general reset controllers and shows explicitly the overcoming of frequency-domain limitations (Bode's gain-phase relation).

Planar path following control for stratospheric airship

A novel planar path following control method for an underactuated stratospheric airship is presented in this study. Firstly, the Guidance-Based Path Following (GBPF) principle and the Trajectory Linearisation control (TLC) theory are described. Then, dynamic model of the stratospheric airship is introduced with kinematics and dynamics equations. Based on this model, a path following control strategy integrated GBPF principle and TLC theory is deduced. The designed control system possesses a cascaded structure which consists of guidance law subsystem, attitude control loop and velocity control loop. Stability analysis shows that the controlled closed-loop system is asymptotically stable. Finally, simulations for the stratospheric airship and flight experimental results for a low-altitude airship to follow typical paths are illustrated to verify effectiveness of the proposed approach.

DECENTRALISED controlLER WITH ONLINE INTERACTION TRAJECTORY IMPROVEMENT

In this paper, we develop a decentralised controller for large-scale linear interconnected dynamical systems by using, for each subsystem, a low-order model for the interactions. The output of the interaction model is improved online using a model-following technique. The controller gains are calculated only once, and they are easy to compute since all operations are done subsystem by subsystem. A sufficient condition is also developed for the stability of the global system with the decentralised control subject to structural perturbations. It is seen that satisfaction of this condition provides a robust design which is insensitive to structural perturbations.
