Event-triggered control of singularly perturbed linear system with DoS attacks

This paper presents the event-triggered control problem of linear singularly perturbed systems in the presence of denial-of-service attacks. To save the communication and computing resources, event-triggered mechanisms in two transmission channels are used to guarantee the ultimately bounded stability of the closed-loop system. Absolute event-triggering conditions are proposed in the sensor and the controller nodes, where the controller node utilises only the state of the slow model of the singularly perturbed system. Positive lower bounds of inter-event times are given to eliminate Zeno behaviour in the presence and absence of DoS attacks. Finally, two examples are provided to illustrate the efficiency and feasibility of the obtained results.

This paper focuses on the mean-square output consensus of heterogeneous multi-agent systems, in which the communication noises are taken into consideration. Through internal model principle and control gain function, the novel state feedback and output feedback control strategies are designed for leaderless and a leader situation respectively to attenuate disturbances caused by communication noises. In addition, based on matrix theory and stochastic analysis, the sufficient condition for output consensus in the corresponding case is obtained. In the end, the simulations are used to confirm the correctness of the conclusion.

This study proposes a variable boundary-layer full-order sliding-mode observer (FOSMO) with a fuzzy proportional plus integral (PI) phase-locked loop (PLL) for the sensorless control of a permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM). The sigmoid switching function-based FOSMO, which includes feedback speed information, is presented and considered as the conventional method. To address the contradiction between the convergence performance and the chatter-reduction ability of the sliding-mode control, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is introduced to adjust the boundary-layer thickness according to the estimation error. Furthermore, a real-time parameter tuning module is integrated into the PI regulator of the conventional PLL to adjust its noise bandwidth. Hence, adverse effects of disturbance and external noise, especially under transient operations, can be eliminated. An overall PMSM sensorless field-oriented control scheme incorporating the proposed method is designed, and the corresponding experimental platform is constructed. Several groups of comparative experiments reveal that system chatters are largely reduced using the proposed method under both of the high- and low-speed running conditions and the dynamic anti-interference performance can also be significantly improved under load and speed disturbances. Therefore, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed variable boundary-layer FOSMO + fuzzy-PI PLL method are validated.

This paper presents a new approach of the continuous-discrete observer design for a class of uncertain state-affine non-linear systems. A high-gain observer redesign is developed and analysed under insightful conditions. The proposed observer estimates the state vector by using system output measurements with long sampling times. This result is achieved by considering a persistent excitation condition that can be validated online. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated under time-varying sampled measurements to estimate the friction factor of a pipeline where the case of noisy sampled output measurements is also considered.

State Feedback and Synergetic controllers for tuberculosis in infected population

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious disease which can easily be disseminated in a society. A five state Susceptible, exposed, infected, recovered and resistant (SEIRs) epidemiological mathematical model of TB has been considered along with two non-linear controllers: State Feedback (SFB) and Synergetic controllers have been designed for the control and prevention of the TB in a population. Using the proposed controllers, the infected individuals have been reduced/controlled via treatment, and susceptible individuals have been prevented from the disease via vaccination. A mathematical analysis has been carried out to prove the asymptotic stability of proposed controllers by invoking the Lyapunov control theory. Simulation results using MATLAB/Simulink manifest that the non-linear controllers show fast convergence of the system states to their respective desired levels. Comparison shows that proposed SFB controller performs better than Synergetic controller in terms of convergence time, steady state error and oscillations.

Strategy for distributed controller defence: Leveraging controller roles and control support groups to maintain or regain control in cyber-adversarial power systems

Distributed controllers play a prominent role in electric power grid operation. The coordinated failure or malfunction of these controllers is a serious threat, where the resulting mechanisms and consequences are not yet well-known and planned against. If certain controllers are maliciously compromised by an adversary, they can be manipulated to drive the system to an unsafe state. The authors present a strategy for distributed controller defence (SDCD) for improved grid tolerance under conditions of distributed controller compromise. The work of the authors' first formalises the roles that distributed controllers play and their control support groups using controllability analysis techniques. With these formally defined roles and groups, the authors then present defence strategies for maintaining or regaining system control during such an attack. A general control response framework is presented here for the compromise or failure of distributed controllers using the remaining, operational set. The SDCD approach is successfully demonstrated with a 7-bus system and the IEEE 118-bus system for single and coordinated distributed controller compromise;the results indicate that SDCD is able to significantly reduce system stress and mitigate compromise consequences.

An adaptive fractional fuzzy sliding mode controlled PSS for transient stability improvement under different system uncertainties

An adaptive fractional fuzzy sliding mode controller (AFFSMC) based power system stabilizer (PSS) is proposed for damping out low-frequency oscillations in single machine infinite bus and multimachine power systems under various operational contingencies. The proposed stabilizer is a combination of adaptive fuzzy control with a fractional order proportional integral derivative controller and sliding mode controller. A fractional sliding surface is adopted which enables the system to remain in the proposed robust sliding surface stably to eliminate the effects of chattering at any initial conditions. In addition, fractional adaptive rules based on fuzzy sets were used for optimal selection of parameters of the controller. Here, the stability issue is addressed through Lyapunov synthesis. Speed deviation and acceleration are considered as input signals to the proposed controller. A comparative analysis of performance indices such as settling time, maximum peak overshoot is presented to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed approach. In addition, stability analysis using Eigen value, integral time absolute error and shape of demerit were also presented to augment the stability study. The simulation results confirm that the proposed AFFSMC-PSS shows superior robust damping performance as compared to other approaches.

Unified modelling, analysis, and reinforced sliding-mode design of a high-order buck/boost converter are proposed for DC energy systems. The high voltage gain with low current stress on the converter's circuit components will noticeably improve its performance in DC energy systems. The mathematical model of this multimode converter is established by deploying the averaging state-space modelling approach and a duty-ratio constraint-deriving method. According to the unified multimode model, a reinforced sliding-mode controller is proposed for this converter, and the sliding surface is designed using the estimated load information. A complete stability analysis of the reinforced sliding-mode regulated converter system is also carried out. In addition, a hardware-based comparison study involving the proposed controller and an existing robust sliding-mode controller is provided to validate the effectiveness of the unified workflow involving modelling, analysis, and regulation design.

A detailed description of an Automated Demand Response system is presented that can provide active distribution-level voltage control, and sub-second system-wide frequency response services. The system is validated using a hardware-in-the-loop demonstrator including synchronous machines, real and simulated Internet Protocol communications, cloud-based computing, inexpensive measurement hardware, and state-of-the-art secure IoT protocols. It is shown that a real-time, model-informed, demand-response system utilising wide-area Phasor measurement unit (PMU) data is cost effective and feasible.

Finite-time convergence for bilateral teleoperation systems with disturbance and time-varying delays

This paper addresses the robust finite-time sliding mode control algorithms for nonlinear bilateral teleoperators in the presence of variable time delays and disturbances. In this paper, the designs of terminal sliding control are proposed to guarantee the finite-time convergence of not only the sliding variables but also the coordination errors on position tracking. The proposed control algorithm is able to ensure finite-time convergence without requiring the relative velocities and power signal in the communication channel. Additionally, the finite-time controller is developed with additional terms of sign and exponential function to tackle the variable time delay between two sides in bilateral teleoperators. The Lyapunov synthesis principle and additional lemmas are exploited to ensure the finite-time stability of the closed-loop system in the presence of delays and disturbance. The situations of free-motion, passive, and non-passive human/environment forces are considered for finite-time convergence without the need of acceleration signals. Finally, numerical examples and experimental studies are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controllers.
