Stability and stabilisation of Markovian jump systems with time-varying delay: an input-output approach

This study revisits the problems of stability analysis and controller synthesis of Markovian jump systems with time-varying delay via an input-output approach. First, the system under consideration is transformed into an interconnected system, and the result on stochastic scaled small-gain condition for stochastic interconnected systems is presented, which is key idea to solve the problems considered in this study. Based on the system transformation and the stochastic scaled small[gain theorem, the stochastic stability of the original system is examined via the stochastic version of the bounded realness of the transformed forward system. The merit of the proposed approach lies in its reduced conservatism, which is made possible by a precise approximation of the time-varying delay and the stochastic scaled small-gain theorem. The proposed stability condition is demonstrated to be much less conservative than most existing results. Moreover, the problem of stabilisationis further solved with admissible controller designed via convex optimisations, whose effectiveness is also illustrated via numerical examples.

Estimation of kinetic rates in a baker's yeast fed-batch bioprocess by using non-linear observers

The growth rates of the micro-organisms in bioreactors are described by complex kinetic expressions, and the modelling and estimation of such kinetics are essential for the design of control strategies. This study deals with the online estimation of kinetic rates of a baker's yeast process, taking place inside a fed-batch bioreactor. This bioprocess is widely used in bioindustry;its model is highly non-linear and, furthermore, the available online measurements are missing and the reaction kinetics is not perfectly known. The unknown kinetics is estimated by using non-linear observers, based on high-gain approach. Two high-gain observers are designed and implemented: one for the specific growth rates and the other for the reaction rates of the baker's yeast bioprocess. The multiple estimation schemes do not require any model for the kinetic rates. The tuning of the proposed observers is reduced to the calibration of a single parameter. An observer-based estimator is also implemented in order to use it for comparisons. Numerical simulations are included to test the behaviour and the performance of the proposed observers.

controllability and observability of switched Boolean control networks

The controllability and observability are investigated for a class of switched Boolean control networks (SBCNs). Using semi-tensor product of matrices, the dynamics of an SBCN can be transformed into an algebraic form. The model-input-state (MIS) matrix of an SBCN is introduced and studied for the first time. This matrix contains complete information of the MIS mapping. A necessary and sufficient condition for the controllability of SBCN is obtained. The corresponding control and switching law, which drive a point to a given reachable point are designed. A sufficient condition for the observability of an SBCN is given. Moreover, under the assumption of controllability, one necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the observability.

Robust H_∞ control for uncertain discrete-time stochastic neural networks with time-varying delays

In the last few years, the H-infinity control problem has attracted much attention because of its both practical and theoretical importance. This study presents a robust H-infinity control design approach for a class of uncertain discrete-time stochastic neural networks with time-varying delays. The neural network under consideration is subject to time-varying and norm bounded parameter uncertainties. For the robust stabilisation problem, a state feedback controller is designed to ensure global robust stability of the closed-loop form of neural network about its equilibrium point for all admissible uncertainties. In addition, to the requirement of the global robust stability, a prescribed H-infinity performance level for all delays to satisfy both the lower bound and upper bound of the interval time-varying delay is required to be obtained. Through construction of a new Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, a robust H-infinity control scheme is presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The controller gains can be derived by solving a set of LMIs. Finally, numerical examples with simulation results are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the developed theoretical results.

Attitude controller design of mini-unmanned aerial vehicles using fuzzy sliding-mode control degraded by white noise interference

This work addresses an attitude controller design using a fuzzy sliding-mode controller, which is mainly composed of the sliding-mode controller and the fuzzy inference mechanism, for a mini-unmanned aerial vehicle (mini-UAV) with propellers, to follow the predetermined trajectory. In this study, a fuzzy sliding-mode controller with a sliding surface vector is proposed, such that a simple fuzzy inference mechanism is adopted with centre of membership functions to estimate the upper bound of lumped uncertainty. Accordingly, the attitude trajectory tracking control using the proposed control strategy is illustrated while a mini-UAV is flying. Finally, the authors use the Lyapunov stability theory to achieve the stability analysis of the overall attitude tracking system degraded by white noise interference. Extensive simulation results are obtained to validate the effectiveness of the fuzzy sliding-mode controller.

Low-frequency current ripple reduction in front-end boost converter with single-phase inverter load

The low-frequency current ripple that always appears at the input of the single-phase DC/AC inverters decreases the lifetime of DC voltage sources, such as fuel cells and chemical batteries. In this study, based on series and parallel feedback theory, a proportional-integral (PI) controller is designed for the front-end boost converter in two-stage power converters. This controller increases the output impedance of the boost converter, which reduces the low-frequency current ripple at the input of this two-stage converter. Since the designed controller corrupts the dynamic response of the boost converter, the DC-link voltage severely over/undershoots in step load conditions. Overcoming this issue by employing a non-linear gain in the forward path is shown. By applying this proposed technique, the output voltage over/undershoot stays in an acceptable range. Therefore both the low-frequency input current ripple and the DC-link over/undershoot problems disappear simultaneously without employing any additional equipment, especially a bulky DC capacitor. The simulation and experimental results for a 2.5 kW prototype confirm the performance of the proposed idea.

Actuator fault estimation using direct reconstruction approach for linear multivariable systems

This study considers the application of a continuous non-linear fault estimation system to reconstruct the state vector and actuator faults for multivariable linear systems, in which the effects of faults are modelled as additive unknown inputs. To estimate the state, a continuous function is introduced to compensate the effects of fault and disturbance. It is shown that if the state reconstruction error converges to zero asymptotically, then the continuous function can be used as a reconstruction of fault and disturbance. The feasibility of the design scheme can be checked by solving a linear matrix inequality. Also, the design scheme does not rely on any particular canonical form of the model, so coordinate transformation is not necessary. Using the similar approach, a disturbance decoupled fault reconstruction scheme is also proposed. Finally, a design example is given and the reconstruction of both multiplicative fault and additive disturbance are simulated.

New hybrid adaptive control approach for aircraft with centre of gravity variation

Owing to centre of gravity (C.G.) variations, an aircraft may deviate from its nominal dynamics, which poses special problems to the flight control system. To overcome the limitations of accurate mathematical model and poor robust performance of the conventional method, a new hybrid C.G. estimation-sliding-mode adaptive control approach is proposed. A two-loop sliding-mode based adaptive control scheme is designed to guarantee the robustness of the closed-loop system towards potential uncertainties and disturbances. In addition, online C.G. estimation based on adaptive weight data fusion is introduced to guarantee smaller dynamic inversion errors. The parameter adaptation rules for the hybrid adaptive controller are obtained by the Lyapunov stability theory and Barbalat's lemma. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach can quickly adapt to the changing dynamics of the aircraft and provide consistent performance under varying C.G. locations.

Sub-optimal distributed control law with H₂ performance for identical dynamically coupled linear systems

In this study, a collection of agents performing a shared task making use of relative information communicated over an information network is considered. A two-step control design procedure for distributed control of such systems is proposed. The control law is guaranteed to provide a certain level of H-2 performance at a network level. An analysis of the proposed control law in the presence of delays in the relative information is carried out to obtain a bound on the maximum delay possible.

Improved resilient feedback stabilisation method for uncertain systems

The problem of resilient stabilisation for a class of continuous-time uncertain systems having norm-bounded parametric uncertainties is investigated. Both static and dynamic output-feedback resilient controller design is considered. The goal is to robustly quadratically stabilise the uncertain plant considering the controller gain perturbations. Sufficient conditions for the existence of static output feedback and dynamic output feedback resilient controllers are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example for each type of controllers is illustrated to demonstrate their effectiveness.
