Multi-loop linear resonant voltage source inverter controller design for distorted loads using the linear quadratic regulator method

In this study, an optimal multi-loop linear resonant control structure for a voltage source inverter (VSI) coupled to an inductor-capacitor (LC) filter is proposed for supplying nonlinear loads. A resonant controller ensures that sinusoidal voltage references are properly tracked and sinusoidal current disturbances are rejected without steady-state error under stable conditions. A desired transient response, on the other hand, can only be obtained by properly setting the controller coefficients. Further challenges include the reduction of output total harmonic distortion (THD), improving the damping of the LC resonance frequency and preventing the generation of fast closed-loop modes, which surpass the bandwidth of the inverter. The proposed technique is an extension of the classic linear quadratic regulator (LQR) that addresses the optimal tracking problem and provides a simple and step-by-step problem solving without stability or robustness issues. Additionally, the study also presents an improved controller to further reduce the voltage distortions for applications requiring acute accuracy. The designed controller is simulated and experimentally tested. The results are presented, discussed and confirmed against analytical derivations.

Global finite-time stabilisation using bounded feedback for a class of non-linear systems

In this study, the authors consider the problem of global finite-time stabilisation for a class of non-linear systems by bounded feedback control. First, we use the generalised adding a power integrator and the nested saturation methods to design a saturated homogeneous state feedback controller. Under this bounded controller, a class of non-linear systems comprised of a chain of power integrators perturbed by uncertain bounded non-linearities can be globally stabilised in a finite time. Second, as an application of previous developed results, a bounded finite-time output feedback controller is designed for a class of special non-linear systems, which is comprised by a chain of integrators plus known bounded non-linearities. To estimate the unknown states in a finite time, a finite-time convergent observer is constructed. By substituting the estimated states into the state feedback stabiliser, it can be guaranteed that the closed-loop system is globally finite-time stable.

The considered problem is robust controllability of linear systems with both multiple delays in control and structured parametric uncertainties. Under the assumption that the linear nominal system with multiple control delays is controllable, a sufficient condition is proposed to preserve the assumed property when system uncertainties are introduced. The application of the proposed sufficient condition is demonstrated in two examples.

This study presents a reduced-order state-space average model and a fixed switching frequency (FSF) sliding mode controller (SMC) for the negative output elementary super lift Luo-converter (NOESLLC) operated in continuous conduction mode for application fields requiring the constant power source such as medical, telecommunication, industrial, military etc. The NOESLLC is an attractive dc-dc converter that can provide high-voltage transfer gain. Owing to the time-varying switched mode operation, the dynamic performance of the NOESLLC becomes highly non-linear. In order to enhance the dynamics performance and output voltage regulation of the NOESLLC, the FSFSMC is developed. The proposed FSFSMC is more appropriate to the inherently variable-structured NOESLLC when represented in the reduced-order state-space average-based mathematical model. The three conditions of FSMSMC applicable to the NOESLLC, namely, existence, reaching and stability conditions are analysed. The performance of the developed controller is validated for its robustness to perform over a wide range of working conditions through both in MATLAB/Simulink models and as well as in the laboratory prototype with the comparative study of a typical proportional-integral-controller. Theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the designed FSFSMC along with the complete systematic design procedure.

In this note, a problem that must be paid attention to is highlighted here on using the sector non-linearity in the fuzzy model construction. The sector non-linearity approach can guarantee an exact fuzzy model construction. However, it needs carefully checking to prevent that the physical constraints are violated when the sector non-linearity approach is used. Based on the exact fuzzy model obtained from the sector non-linearity approach, an approach of designing static output feedback controller is presented in a recent study. However, it can be found that the designed control result is erroneous in that published study, owing to that a physical constraint is violated.

Add-on type loop shaping controller design for high precision track following in hard disc drives (HDDs)

In this study, the authors present a systematic design method of the add-on type loop shaping scheme for high precision track following with plant modelling perturbations in HDDs. The proposed controller minimises the standard deviation of the position error signal (PES) of certain closed-loop transfer function while satisfying the robust stability condition in HDDs. Compared with the conventional H-infinity control, the proposed method yields estimated plant states, which can be used for estimator-based controller design. Also, the proposed control method can be implemented in a parallel manner by performing a partial-fraction expansion for easy implementation. The effectiveness and practicality of our work is demonstrated through various experimental results.

Output-feedback adaptive fuzzy control for a class of non-linear time-varying delay systems with unknown control directions

In this study, an adaptive fuzzy control scheme is proposed for a class of non-linear systems with unknown discrete and distributed time-varying delays via dynamic output-feedback approach. Unlike the system with only one unknown control coefficient, the so-called high-frequency gain, the system we will consider is more general. During the controller design procedure, novel Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals are introduced to compensate for the unknown time-varying delay terms and all unknown functions are lumped into a suitable unknown function which can be approximated by only one fuzzy logic system (FLS). The main advantages of this study are that (i) the output-feedback adaptive fuzzy controller can dispose a class of non-linear systems with unknown time-varying delays, in which the virtual control coefficients are all unknown, (ii) it does not need to know the time delays and their upper bounds and (iii) only one parameter needs to be adjusted online in controller design procedure, which reduces the online computation burden greatly. It is proven that all the signals of the closed-loop system are semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded, whereas the tracking error converges to a small neighbourhood of the origin. Finally, simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Global adaptive stabilisation of feedforward systems by smooth output feedback

The authors address the problem of global output-feedback stabilisation for a class of feedforward nonlinear systems. The system satisfies linear growth condition with an unknown growth rate. Using the dynamic gain scaling technique and introducing a new adaptive law, it is proved that global adaptive stabilisation of the feedforward systems can be achieved by smooth output feedback. The gain matrices are only required to satisfy the Hurwitz condition, which makes the control law very easy to implement. Moreover, the authors show that for feedforward systems and low triangular systems with unknown linear growth rate, global adaptive stabilisation can be handled in a unifying framework, that is, the observer and the controller can be designed in a same structure just with two different adaptive laws for the dynamic gain, respectively.

Adaptive speed controller design for a permanent magnet synchronous motor

An adaptive speed controller is proposed for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The proposed adaptive speed regulator is insensitive to model parameter and load torque variations because it does not need any accurate knowledge about the motor parameter and load torque values. The stability of the proposed control system is also proven. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive speed controller under the uncertainties such as motor parameter and load torque variations using a prototype PMSM drive system.
