Improving the humidification of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel-cells (PEMFC) is essential to optimize its performance and stability. Therefore, this paper presents an experimentally validated model of a low temperature PEMFC cathode humidifier for control/observation design purposes. A multi-input/multi-output non-linear fourth order model is derived, based on the mass and heat dynamics of circulating air. In order to validate the proposed model and methodology, experimental results are provided. Finally, a non-linear control strategy based on second order sliding mode is designed and analyzed in order to show suitability and usefulness of the approach. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. In this work, a low-order model designed for glucose regulation in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is obtained from the UVA/Padova metabolic simulator. It captures not only the nonlinear behavior of the glucose-insulin system, but also intra-patient variations related to daily insulin sensitivity (S-I) changes. To overcome the large inter-subject variability, the model can also be personalized based on a priori patient information. The structure is amenable for linear parameter varying (LPV) controller design, and represents the dynamics from the subcutaneous insulin input to the subcutaneous glucose output. The efficacy of this model is evaluated in comparison with a previous control-oriented model which in turn is an improvement of previous models. Both models are compared in terms of their open- and closed-loop differences with respect to the UVA/Padova model. The proposed model outperforms previous T1DM control-oriented models, which could potentially lead to more robust and reliable controllers for glycemia regulation.

The development of a control-oriented model of a solar community with seasonal storage (the Drake Landing Solar Community) is investigated. The proposed approach, intended to facilitate the development and testing of control strategies and targeting an actual predictive control implementation, is based on grey-box models, and enables the prediction of the system state (temperatures at key locations). This paper discusses the concept of state update procedure (whereby the system state is periodically corrected with measurements), which plays a fundamental role for control purposes. Firstly, the DLSC is presented and both operation and monitoring system are described. Secondly, a simplified model is developed for each sub-system: district and solar loops, short-term (water tanks) and seasonal (borehole) thermal energy storage, and existing operation rules are encoded. Finally, the model is calibrated and validated by using measurements at 10-min intervals over two years of operation (2015-2016, 2016-2017) and accurately predicts the system performance.

Development of a control-oriented model of the vertical motions of a fast ferry

As a main part of a research study on the control of active flaps and a T-foil of a high-speed ferry, a control-oriented model of vertical motions of the ship has been developed. The objective of the control is to improve comfort, decreasing the impact of heave and pitch motions. We have experimental data from a towing tank institution and simulations with PRECAL. The model is based on a decomposition of the physic phenomena into two main aspects: the coupling of the ship with distance between waves and the dynamics of a semisubmerged mass. The model can be handled with MATLAB-SIMULINK, which is useful for studying control strategies. The model shows good agreement (model validation) with the experimental and simulated data for regular and irregular waves. The article shows a methodology, based on MATLAB tools, for obtaining control-oriented models from computer-aided design (CAD)-based programs. That means that the control-oriented model can be derived from the ship design, even before the ship is built.

This paper presents a control-oriented model of a neutrally buoyant underwater snake robot that is exposed to a constant irrotational current. The robot is assumed to move in a horizontal, fully submerged plane with a sinusoidal gait pattern and limited link angles. The intention behind the proposed model is to describe the qualitative behaviour of the robot by a simplified kinematic approach, thus neglecting some of the non-linear effects that do not significantly contribute to the overall behaviour. This results in a model with significantly less complex dynamic equations than existing models, which makes the new model well-fitted for control design and analysis. An existing, more complex model and a class of sinusoidal gait patterns are analysed, leading to several properties that serve as a basis for the simplified model. Some of the revealed properties are also valid for ground robots. Simulations that qualitatively validate the theoretical results are presented.

The system modeling and controller design for air-breathing hypersonic vehicles have always been one of the most highly challenging tasks to the development of hypersonic flight technologies due to the unique characteristics of the vehicle dynamics. In this paper, we first provide an overview of three major classes of control-oriented models of air-breathing hypersonic vehicles in existing literatures. Moreover, explicitly analytical mathematical expressions and basic dynamic characteristics as well as applications in control system design of these models are presented. And then, hierarchical and internal relations of different kind of models are analyzed. Finally, recent results and future trends of control-oriented modeling for flight control design of air-breathing hypersonic vehicles are summarized.

Low temperature combustions such as Reactivity controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) have been shown to be a promising way to reduce pollutants at the exhaust, i.e. NOx and soot emissions, and increase the thermal efficiency of future engines. However, such concepts are subject to substantial control sensitivity, e.g. combustion phasing, due to their lack of direct actuation for controlling the ignition of the mixture. This work investigates a control-oriented model based on physical equations aimed to predict the start of combustion and the crank angle of 50% fuel burnt (CA50). The model was developed for predicting the ignition using a modified knock integral model and a linear equation was used to estimate the burn duration between the start of combustion and the combustion phasing. The calibration and the validation of the model were performed using experimental data from a heavy-duty engine showing good results under transient operation. A control-oriented model for Trajectory-Based HCCI Combustion control

Previously, the authors have proposed the concept of piston trajectory-based homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion control enabled by a free piston engine (FPE) and shown its benefits on both engine thermal efficiency and emissions by implementing various piston trajectories. In order to realize the HCCI trajectory-based combustion control in practical applications, a control-oriented model with sufficient chemical kinetics information has to be developed. In this paper, such a model is proposed and its performance, in terms of computational speed and model fidelity, is compared to three existing models: a simplified model using a one-step global reaction, a reduced-order model using Jones-Lindstedt mechanism, and a complex physics-based model including detailed chemical reaction mechanisms. A unique phase separation method is proposed to significantly reduce the computational time and guarantee the prediction accuracy simultaneously. In addition, the paper also shows that the high fidelity of the proposed model is sustained at multiple working conditions, including different air-fuel ratios (AFR), various compression ratios (CR), and distinct piston motion patterns between the two end positions. Finally, an example is presented showing how the control-oriented model enables real-time optimization of the HCCI combustion phasing by varying the trajectories. The simulation results show that the combustion phasing can be adjusted quickly as desired, which further demonstrates the effectiveness of the piston trajectory-based combustion control.

A control-oriented combustion model for a turbulent jet ignition engine using liquid fuel

A control-oriented engine model is necessary for developing and validating the associated engine control strategies. For engines equipped with the turbulent jet ignition system, the interaction between the pre- and main-combustion chambers should be considered in the control-oriented model for model-based control strategies that optimize the overall thermal efficiency in real-time. Therefore, a two-zone combustion model based on the newly proposed parameter-varying Wiebe function is proposed. Since the engine uses the liquid fuel, a pre-chamber air-fuel mixing and vaporization model are also developed. The model was validated using the experimental data from a single-cylinder turbulent jet ignition engine under different operational conditions, and the simulation results show a good agreement with the experimental data. The relative simulation error of the in-cylinder pressure is less than 8%. For most of the other pressure-related variables, such as indicated mean effective pressure and main-chamber burn duration, the relative errors are within 5%.

In this paper, an air path model of diesel engine is developed, parameterized, and validated. In order to promote the design of model-based control techniques, such as model-predictive control for modern diesel engine, it is important to establish a control-oriented model that can describe the gas mass flow dynamics including the dynamics of the pressure of intake and exhaust manifold and the turbocharger. Through the analysis of the structure of air path system, a simplied model with three states is obtained. Using the real-time data from diesel engine test bench, we estimate several submodels parameters by adopting the least square optimization. Calculating the relative error between estimated parameters and corresponding measured one verify the accuracy of the model.
