A linear programming approach to routing control in networks of constrained nonlinear positive systems with concave flow rates

We consider control design for positive compartmental systems in which each compartment's outflow rate is described by a concave function of the amount of material in the compartment. We address the problem of determining the routing of material between compartments to satisfy time-varying state constraints while ensuring that material reaches its intended destination over a finite time horizon. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of a time-varying state-dependent routing strategy which ensures that the closed-loop system satisfies basic network properties of positivity, conservation and interconnection while ensuring that capacity constraints are satisfied, when possible, or adjusted if a solution cannot be found. These conditions are formulated as a linear programming problem. Instances of this linear programming problem can be solved iteratively to generate a solution to the finite horizon routing problem. Results are given for the application of this control design method to an example problem. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The present work extends known finite-dimensional constrained optimal control realizations to the realm of well-posed regular linear infinite-dimensional systems modeled by partial differential equations. The structure-preserving Cayley-Tustin transformation is utilized to approximate the continuous-time system by a discrete-time model representation without using any spatial discretization or model reduction. The discrete-time model is utilized in the design of model predictive controller accounting for optimality, stabilization, and input and output/state constraints in an explicit way. The proposed model predictive controller is dual-mode in the sense that predictive controller steers the state to a set where exponentially stabilizing unconstrained feedback can be utilized without violating the constraints. The construction of the model predictive controller leads to a finite-dimensional constrained quadratic optimization problem easily solvable by standard numerical methods. A noninteracting control strategy for the robust output synchronization of linear heterogeneous networks

This paper deals with the problem of robust output synchronization for heterogeneous multi-agent systems. First, a new synchronization approach is presented to synchronize the outputs of heterogeneous agents. Based on noninteracting control techniques, a method is derived for homogenizing the input-output behavior of every agent. Hence, applying the same reference input signal to every agent leads to synchronization. Furthermore, a strategy for increasing the robustness of the synchronization process against exogenous disturbances is presented, which leads to a structurally constrained optimization problem. However, by a convenient reformulation of the problem, well established tools from robust control theory can be used. Moreover, it is shown that this procedure allows to separate the robustness issue from the synchronization task. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by a robust output synchronization example for a heterogeneous aircraft fleet.

Progressive events in supervisory control and compositional verification

This paper investigates some limitations of the nonblocking property when used for supervisor synthesis in discrete event systems. It is shown that there are cases where synthesis with the nonblocking property gives undesired results. To address such cases, the paper introduces progressive events as a means to specify more precisely how a synthesised supervisor should complete its tasks. The nonblocking property is modified to take progressive events into account, and appropriate methods for verification and synthesis are proposed. Experiments show that progressive events can be used in the analysis of industrial-scale systems, and can expose issues that remain undetected by standard nonblocking verification.

Design of PI controllers for Irrigation Canals Based on Linear Matrix Inequalities

A new Proportional-Integral (PI) tuning method based on Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) is presented. In particular, an LMI-based optimal control problem is solved to obtain a sparse feedback that provides the PI tuning. The ASCE Test Canal 1 is used as a case study. Using a linearised model of the canal, different tunings for the design of the PI controller are developed and tested using the software Sobek. Furthermore, the proposed method is also compared with other tunings proposed for the same canal available in the literature. Our results show that the proposed method reduces by half the maximum errors with respect to other assessed alternatives and minimizes undesired mutual interactions between canal pools. Also, our method improves the optimality degree of the PI tuning by 30%. Therefore, it is concluded that the LMI based PI controllers lead to satisfactory performance in regulating water levels and canal flows/structure outflows, outperforming other tested alternatives, thus becoming a useful tool for irrigation canal control.

Compositional synthesis of supervisors in the form of state machines and state maps

This paper investigates the compositional abstraction-based synthesis of least restrictive, controllable, and nonblocking supervisors for discrete event systems that are given as a large number of finite-state machines. It compares a previous algorithm that synthesises modular supervisors in the form of state machines, with an alternative that records state maps after each abstraction step and uses these to control the system. The state map-based algorithm supports all abstraction methods used previously, and in addition allows for nondeterminism, hiding, and transition removal. It has been implemented in the software tool Supremica and applied to several large industrial models. The experimental results and the complexity analysis show that state maps can be computed efficiently and in many cases require less memory than state machine-based supervisors. We study routing control in dynamic continuous-time networks in which each node is described by a linear internally positive system. We derive a linear programming (LP) characterization of optimal constant routing policies for the infinite-horizon routing problem under weighted l(1) constraints and objective. For finite horizon problems with piecewise constant state constraints, we provide sufficient feasibility conditions, which also take the form of an LP problem. We illustrate the solution for the finite horizon problem in an application example. Published by Elsevier Ltd

A new approach is presented to obtain a convex set of robust D-stabilizing fixed structure controllers, relying on Cauchy's argument principle. A convex set of D-stabilizing controllers around an initial D-stabilizing controller for a multi-model set is represented by an infinite set of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). By appropriate sampling of the D-stability boundary, a Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) is proposed that can be integrated in other synthesis approaches to ensure D-stability along other design specifications. To showcase utility of the proposed approach, two different examples are given: a boost converter with multi-model uncertainty and a laser-beam system modeled by an identified finite impulse response. We focus on the H-2-gain-scheduling synthesis problem for time-varying parametric scheduling blocks with scalings. Recently, we have presented a solution of this problem for D- and positive real scalings by guaranteeing finiteness of the H-2-norm for the closed-loop system with suitable linear fractional plant and controller representations. In order to reduce conservatism, we extend these methods to full block scalings by designing a triangular scheduling function and by introducing a new lifting technique for gain-scheduled synthesis that enables convexification. This article presents the application of the structured H8 control approach to the design of the LISA mission accelerometer mode. This joint ESA/NASA mission will be the first space-based gravitational wave observatory and is characterized by very stringent scientific constraints resulting in unprecedented control challenges in terms of precision, accuracy, and complexity. The results presented in here were the first demonstration step performed within an ESA study tasked with surveying, trading-off, and applying advanced control techniques to LISA. In addition to showing the methodological gains and design capabilities of the structured H8 approach, the effects of hardware changes as well as control switching were also analyzed for the designed controllers providing good insight on the way forward to reduce the associated transients. The results presented in this article laid the groundwork, and design process, to subsequently design and validate the full LISA accelerometer mode.
