Identification for control of multivariable systems: controller validation and experiment design via LMIs

This paper presents a new controller validation method for linear multivariable time-invariant models. Classical prediction error system identification methods deliver uncertainty regions which are nonstandard in the robust control literature. Our controller validation criterion computes an upper bound for the worst case performance, measured in terms of the H(infinity)-norm of a weighted closed loop transfer matrix, achieved by a given controller over all plants in such uncertainty sets. This upper bound on the worst case performance is computed via an LMI-based optimization problem and is deduced via the separation of graph framework. Our main technical contribution is to derive, within that framework, a very general parametrization for the set of multipliers corresponding to the nonstandard uncertainty regions resulting from PE identification of MIMO systems. The proposed approach also allows for iterative experiment design. The results of this paper are asymptotic in the data length and it is assumed that the model structure is flexible enough to capture the true system. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we illustrate our new results on model validation for control and controller validation in a prediction error identification framework, developed in a companion paper (Gevers et al., Automatica (2003) 39(3), pii: S005-1098(02)00234-0), through two realistic simulation examples, covering widely different control design applications. The first is the control of a flexible mechanical system (the Landau benchmark example) with a tracking objective, the second is the control of a ferrosilicon production process with a disturbance rejection objective. Mean arterial pressure-embedded model for real-time simulation and controller validation

The lack of models for automatic control of mean arterial pressure (MAP), in real-time, associated with variability in response to sodium nitroprusside infusion, makes it impossible to validate automatic MAP controllers. Therefore, this Letter presents a low-cost innovative real-time model to MAP. Therefore, the authors used a variation of the mathematical model of Slate, implemented in MATLAB((R)). The system was developed with the capabilities of Simulink((R)) and deployed to a single-board computer. The results showed that the embedded model presented an error <3% for a target MAP of 100 mmHg, allowing the use of this model, in real time, for validation of embedded MAP controllers.

This paper proposes a data-driven test for closed-loop stability. The test is based on a necessary and sufficient stability condition that can be verified without having to actually implement the controller. It uses a set of measurements from the plant but does not rely on a plant model. For infinite data length, a validated controller is guaranteed to stabilize the plant. In practice only a finite number of data can be used, and thus only an estimate of the stability condition can be obtained. A reliable stability test needs to take this estimation error into account, which introduces conservatism. The proposed test provides an intuitive trade-off between reliability and conservatism. A simulation example shows the effectiveness of the stability test.

Direct Data Driven Scheme for UAV Flight Control

Consider one special closed loop system structure with one unknown plant and two unknown controllers,i.e. feed forward controller and feedback controllers, our missions are to identify this plant and design these two controllers without any physical principles. Based on the measured input-output data sequence, direct data driven scheme is proposed to achieve these dual goals. For the case of parameterized plant and two parameterized controllers, two kinds of unknown parameter vectors are estimated from the data sequence, and the iterative idea is applied to identify them recursively until to be convergence. In addition, controller validation modular is added to testify whether the designed controllers are satisfied, being from the idea of model validation in system identification. Then theoretical analysis on direct data driven scheme can be implemented to guarantee UAV flight control structure work well, bringing the detailed UAV flight control performance.

Underwater vehicles that travel inside a bubble or supercavity offer possibilities for high-speed and energy-efficient transportation of cargo and personnel. validation and testing of mathematical models and control systems for these vehicles is a challenge due to the cost and complexity of experimental facilities and testing procedures. A cost-efficient and low-complexity approach to the experimental validation of mathematical models and control systems for a supercavitating test vehicle is presented in this paper. The proposed method enables the testing of control algorithms subject to steady and unsteady flows in a high-speed water tunnel. The method combines a real-time simulation of the vehicle dynamics, force measurements from an experimental scale vehicle, and flight control computer to reproduce the vehicle motion subject to realistic flow conditions and hardware constraints as actuator saturation and time delay. The model of the vehicle dynamics, used for the validation infrastructure and control design, is derived using experimental data. A controller designed to track pitch angle reference commands was tested on the experimental platform. The test cases validated the operation of the vehicle and controller subject to steady and unsteady flows.

Development of a driver information and warning system with vehicle hardware-in-the-loop simulations

This paper presents a new method for the design and validation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs). With vehicle hardware-in-the-loop (VeHIL) simulations the development process, and more specifically the validation phase, of intelligent vehicles is carried out safer, cheaper, and more manageable. In the VeHIL laboratory a full-scale ADAS-equipped vehicle is set up in a hardware-in-the-loop simulation environment, where a chassis dynamometer is used to emulate the road interaction and where robot vehicles are used to represent other traffic. In this controlled environment the performance and dependability of an ADAS is tested to great accuracy and reliability. The working principle and the added value of VeHIL are demonstrated with test results of a driver information and warning system. Based on the 'V' diagram, the position of VeHIL in the development process of ADASs is illustrated. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A bound on closed-loop performance based on finite-frequency response samples

A new, computationally tractable, bound is derived for the level of closed-loop performance achieved by a given finite-dimensional feedback compensator with a plant for which a finite number of frequency response samples are computable. The bound involves quantities reflecting the performance of the controller with a finite-dimensional, nominal model of the plant, quantities that can be determined from the finite number of frequency response samples of the true plant, and quantities related to the complexity (in the sense of Vinnicombe) of all systems involved. This bound can be used to 'validate' closed-loop performance in the case that the true plant frequency response samples are of a plant which is not completely known or, to measure the performance of a finite-dimensional controller with a computationally intractable (e.g. infinite-dimensional) model of the true plant. The aim of this paper is to apply falsification techniques to the retuning of an aircraft autopilot, using experimental flight data. More precisely an initial MIMO PI controller, synthesized with a modal technique on a simplified aircraft model, gives a poor performance on the real aircraft. Experimental flight data (generated in the context of our paper with a realistic complete autolanding simulator) are used to directly retune this controller, without the intermediate step of building with these data a sophisticated nonlinear (possibly time-varying) aircraft model.

A Model-Based Design Approach for Stability Assessment, Control Tuning and Verification in Off-Grid Hybrid Power Plants

This paper proposes detailed and practical guidance on applying model-based design (MBD) for voltage and frequency stability assessments, control tuning and verification of off-grid hybrid power plants (HPPs) comprising both grid-forming and grid-feeding inverter units and synchronous generation. First, the requirement specifications are defined by means of system, functional and model requirements. Secondly, a modular approach for state-space modelling of the distributed energy resources (DERs) is presented. Flexible merging of subsystems by properly defining input and output vectors is highlighted to describe the dynamics of the HPP during various operating states. Eigenvalue (EV) and participation factor (PF) analyses demonstrate the necessity of assessing small-signal stability over a wide range of operational scenarios. A sensitivity analysis shows the impact of relevant system parameters on critical EVs and enables one to finally design and tune the central HPP controller (HPPC). The rapid control prototyping and control verification stages are accomplished by means of discrete-time domain models being used in both off-line simulation studies and real-time hardware-in-the-loop (RT-HIL) testing. The outcome of this paper is targeted at off-grid HPP operators seeking to achieve a proof-of-concept on stable voltage and frequency regulation. Nonetheless, the overall methodology is applicable to on-grid HPPs, too.
