In this paper, a novel trellis coded generalized spatial modulation (TCGSM) scheme is presented and analyzed. Similar to that of the traditional generalized spatial modulation (GSM), a subset of the entire transmit antennas is selected for transmission at each time slot. Nevertheless, in the proposed TCGSM scheme, the bits in the spatial domain are first coded by the trellis encoder before antenna selection. The purpose is to combat the correlation of the MIMO channel and hence improve the system performance. We give the detailed system model as well as the trellis encoding/decoding algorithm for the proposed scheme. The performance of the scheme is evaluated through both theoretical analysis and simulations. The results indicate that the proposed scheme is spectral efficient and robust against the channel correlation.

Due to the surface and bottom constraints of the underwater acoustic channel (UAC) in shallow waters, multipath fading occurs and causes degradation of the signal for the UAC system. To overcome these problems, a robust underwater acoustic communication system was designed over multipath fading channels by employing both decision feedback equalization with the RLS algorithm and convolutional coding with interleaving+shuffling block data sequence. The dual use of these two methods simultaneously can reduce the intersymbol interference (ISI) and the adjacent bit and burst errors. The system will retransmit the same signal if the system fails to estimate the channel due to severe multipath fading. To verify the performance of the system, the transmission of an image was tested using a 524,288bit gray-scaled image through the multipath fading channel. The test results showed that the number of bit errors was reduced from 86,824 to 5,106 when the reference SNR was 12 dB.

A memory-based (m s = 50,d v = 2,d c = 4) nonbinary LDPC convolutional code (NB-LDPC-CC) decoder over GF(256) with layered scheduling is presented. The proposed architecture-aware construction features fewer memory banks, low degree, low period, and better performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first architecture discussion and implementation for NB-LDPC-CC decoders. We optimized the architecture of message first-in-first-out (M-FIFO), check node unit, and variable node unit in terms of area and throughput. Jointly designing code and architecture, overall normalized area efficiency can be enhanced by more then six times with respect to decoders of nonbinary LDPC block codes (NB-LDPC BCs). After fabricated in 90nm CMOS, our prototype NB-LDPC-CC decoder chip can achieve maximum throughput of 22.8Mbps with frequency of 285MHz. The measured average power is 211mW at a typical operating voltage of 1.0V.

In contrast to the outage analysis, the packet error rates (PERs) of two types of cooperative automatic retransmission request (ARQ) protocols with opportunistic selective amplified-and-forward (OSAF) relaying are investigated from the perspective of the maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD). The results show that PERs with the threshold requirements derived from the outage analysis cannot benefit from the diversity via opportunistic retransmissions. Based on the PER analysis, effective threshold setting methods for the two types of ARQs are developed to avoid the diversity losses during ARQs, and verified via simulations using convolutional codes. In contrast to the ARQ protocols with the typical opportunistic AF relaying, the new threshold setting methods allow the OSAF ARQ protocols to provide for practical systems a spatial and temporal diversity comparable to what predicts with the outage analysis.

In this paper, polar codes, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and convolutional codes in the status of high-performance wireless (WirelessHP) are discussed. Those classic code schemes are compared in terms of their encoding and decoding complexity and the error-correcting performance. Results show that, polar codes with successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding is superior to the LDPC codes and the convolutional codes in the condition of WirelessHP. The result has certain significance for the development of next generation communication technology.

In this paper, a system for reliable communication of coded grey-level face images over noisy channels is proposed. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used for face image coding and an unequal error protection (UEP) joint source channel coding scheme is proposed for mobile communication applications. Coded images are protected with convolutional codes for transmission over mobile channels. Recognition rates obtained with UEP system approach the 95% recognition performance for images from the ORL face database.

We extract pixel-level masks of extreme weather patterns using variants of Tiramisu and DeepLabv3+ neural networks. We describe improvements to the software frameworks, input pipeline, and the network training algorithms necessary to efficiently scale deep learning on the Piz Daint and Summit systems. The Tiramisu network scales to 5300 P100 GPUs with a sustained throughput of 21.0 PF/s and parallel efficiency of 79.0%. DeepLabv3+ scales up to 27360 V100 GPUs with a sustained throughput of 325.8 PF/s and a parallel efficiency of 90.7% in single precision. By taking advantage of the FP16 Tensor Cores, a half-precision version of the DeepLabv3+ network achieves a peak and sustained throughput of 1.13 EF/s and 999.0 PF/s respectively.

The prediction of salient areas in images has been traditionally addressed with hand-crafted features based on neuroscience principles. This paper, however, addresses the problem with a completely data-driven approach by training a convolutional neural network (convnet). The learning process is formulated as a minimization of a loss function that measures the Euclidean distance of the predicted saliency map with the provided ground truth. The recent publication of large datasets of saliency prediction has provided enough data to train end-to-end architectures that are both fast and accurate. Two designs are proposed: a shallow convnet trained from scratch, and a another deeper solution whose first three layers are adapted from another network trained for classification. To the authors' knowledge, these are the first end-to-end CNNs trained and tested for the purpose of saliency prediction.
