Soft x-ray emission from laser-produced strontium ions

Soft x-ray spectra, in the range from 2 nm to 9 nm, were recorded from strontium plasmas formed by pulses from 20 ps, 170 ps and 5.5 ns Nd:YAG lasers operating at the fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm. Features due to 3d-4p and 3d-4f transitions were identified by comparison with spectra from adjacent ions and atomic structure calculations with both the cowan code and the Flexible Atomic code. As in the spectra of ions of other elements in the fifth row of the periodic table, resonant lines 3d(n)-3d(n-1)4p(1), 3d(n)-3d(n-1)4f(1) and satellite lines 3d(n-1)4s(1)-3d(n-2)4s(1)4p(1), 3d(n-1)4s(1)-3d(n-2)4s(1)4f(1) of Delta n = 1 were observed over the 3.0-8.5 nm region, emitted by 10+ to 19+ ions. These Delta n = 1 transitions provide a range of narrow band emission features which may match to specific multi layer combinations for reflective optics in the extreme ultraviolet region of the spectrum.

Extended analysis of six-times ionized barium (Ba VII)

The seventh spectrum of barium (Ba VII) has been investigated using experimental recordings made on a 3-m normal incidence vacuum spectrograph in Canada in the wavelength region 300-2000 angstrom. The data below 350 angstrom was supplemented from the spectrograms recorded on a 10.7-m grazing incidence spectrograph of NIST laboratory USA. The sources used to excite the spectra in both the cases were triggered spark. Previously reported levels of 5s(2)5p(2), 5s5p(3), 5s(2)5p5d and 5s(2)5p6s in Ba VII have been confirmed except the P-1(1) level of 5s(2)5p5d. The analysis has been extended considerably to include new configurations 5s(2)5p6d and 5s(2)5p7s in odd parity configuration and doubly excited configurations 5s(2)5p6p, 5s(2)5p4f, 5s(2)5p5f, 5p(4), 5s5p(2)5d and 5s5p(2)6s in even parity configuration. The F-3(4) level of 5s(2)5p5d configuration has now been established through the identification of transitions from 5s(2)5p6p. In all, one hundred twenty-two levels have been established in this spectrum out of which ninety-two are new. A configuration interaction Hartree-Fock calculation supports the analysis. Configuration interactions of class 11: An error in cowan's atomic structure theory

For about 35 years since its creation, the suite of atomic structure codes created by R.D. cowan remains the working horse of atomic spectroscopists and is cited in more than 4000 publications. This note concerns one aspect of those codes: calculation of configuration interaction (CI) parameters. It was found that the last of the eleven classes of CI described in cowan's book and implemented in his codes erroneously sets some of the CI parameters in Rydberg series of interacting configurations to zero. This leads to inaccurate description of eigenstates and sizeable errors in calculated transition probabilities. Published by Elsevier B.V.

The spectrum of neutral chromium (Cr I) has been investigated in detail. It is basically a sixelectron system, exhibiting a very complex structure with its ground configuration 3d (5)4s. The low lying excited configuration is 3 d (5)4p and the core excitation leads to 3d (4)4s4p. Further excitations of these configurations give rise to 3d (5)4d, 3d (4)4s (2). In the past, a large number of levels have been reported without any satisfactory theoretical support. In the present work we have observed the spectrum of Cr on a 35 ft grating of our laboratory in the wavelength region 4800-5500 and have carried out configuration interaction (CI) calculations for abovementioned configurations. Known levels have been used to optimize the energy parameters of least squares fitted parametric calculations. These parameters were used to predict the unknown levels more precisely. Among 1014 energy levels, 652 levels are newly predicted (208 listed in the tables and 444 levels lying above 66500 cm(-1) are available privately on demand).
