The phenomenon of animal rights has been a controversial issue i.e. not given proper priority but deserves utmost attention. The present study was designed in response to the increasing need to comprehend the unique being of animals within social boundaries. Besides, considering the ongoing discussions initiated in the varied recent studies as well as the contentious debates held within several up-to-date media sources, this study, designed as a single-site case study, delved into the draft law that has been proposed by the Turkish government on euthanasia of stray animals. The data were obtained from six media platforms signifying three different editorial styles, namely pro-government, anti-government, and alternative channels. Three-dimensional critical discourse analysis model and framing theory were simultaneously utilized to analyze the data. The findings revealed characteristic differences among six different media portals. The pro-government channels were relatively cautious in reporting the bill whereas the anti-government channels' agenda was generous in informing the public highly sensitively. Conversely, the alternative media platforms were found to be more neutral in demonstrating their responses to the draft law. Conclusively, case-specific discoveries, perspectives, reflections, and insights were highlighted, and it was underscored that animals' fundamental societal role requires more thorough acknowledgment and attention.

This study aims to examine how Black communities construct their discourses about opioid overdose response from lived experiences in the Indianapolis area. We randomly selected and analyzed 20 out of 50 interviews as data saturation was reached. Our analysis was informed by critical discourse analysis (CDA) and intersectionality as an overarching framework for the interpretation process. Each interview lasted about 60 min and consisted of ten open-ended questions. Participants were Black residents over 18 years old, who lived in four zip code areas in Indianapolis that had the highest rates of opioid overdose deaths in the city. The interviews revealed complex ways in which Black communities in Indianapolis navigated the opioid overdose crisis. The discourses on opioid overdose response are shaped by the intersectionality of various factors, including institutionalized racism, social discrimination, and fear of mistreatment. Moreover, the normalization of inadequate opioid overdose response is exacerbated by the stereotypes on Black communities, lack of access to resources and information, and historical mistrust in healthcare and law enforcement bodies. Our findings indicate that future intervention to reduce overdose deaths in the Black communities should move away from isolated approaches to holistic ones. These should encompass various intersecting factors, including structural racism, stigma of drug use, fear of mistreatment, lack of resources, and mistrust of law enforcement.

There is evidence of increased links in media coverage between anthropogenic climate change and heatwaves, wildfires and flooding events. This usually pertains to major disasters, but that is a relative concept as the notion of disaster is contextual and disasters are devastating at smaller scales for the people impacted. Media reporting of the Alpha Road/Tambaroora bushfire in the central-west region of New South Wales (Australia), in March 2023, was analysed using critical discourse analysis (CDA) to analyse links between science, anthropogenic climate change and an extreme weather-related event. There was a focus on proximate causes, costs and impact on livelihoods. There was an absence of climate change discourse. Timely attribution science, especially rapid assessments that accurately connect climate change with significant weather-related events, not just large-scale disasters, may increase media salience and assist with science communication. The expectation that parts of Australia will burn, and therefore bushfires become newsworthy only when they are disasters, needs to be challenged in order to live in a changing climate.

While the topic of migrant representation in media discourse has been extensively researched, a significant portion of scholarly attention is concentrated on Western media. This focus leaves a considerable gap in the study of media representations in transitional countries, particularly North African nations like Tunisia. This topic assumes greater significance in light of the recent surge in xenophobia towards sub-Saharan African migrants in the country - a movement partly instigated by President Kais Saied's anti-immigrant rhetoric. Utilising Corpus-Assisted critical discourse analysis (CDA), this paper examines the discursive representations of sub-Saharan African migrants in Tunisian written media discourse, focusing on the 2022 and 2023 anti-migrant wave in Tunisia under the presidency of Kais Saied. The research findings reveal that while a glimpse of a humanitarian discourse was evident, the majority of the discourse was characterised either by biased neutrality or explicit prejudice. The research indicates a predominantly negative representation, categorising migrants as invaders, security threats, economic burdens, and moral hazards. Significantly, much of the discourse echoes the political anti-immigrant policy, suggesting a potential media alignment with the emerging authoritarian tendencies in Tunisia. This alignment harbours damaging implications for the safety and well-being of the migrant community, as well as for the overall human rights and democratisation process in the country.

Animated cartoons provide entertainment for children. In addition, they serve as agents of socialization. The content of animated cartoons is capable of changing, molding and influencing the thoughts and actions of children. Using Thompson's Modes of Ideology, this study provides a critical discourse analysis of the ideologies projected in three selected animated cartoons of African origin and how the projected ideologies are portrayed. Data were gathered through document analysis and examined using textual and thematic analyses. It was discovered that animated cartoons are embedded with certain ideologies or worldviews capable of changing the mindsets of children. Ideologies such as patriarchy, hegemonic masculinity and sexualization of women were projected in the animated cartoons. It was also found that the selected animated cartoons project parent-child power imbalance and marriage and childbirth as the ultimate. In addition, the findings revealed the projection of certain ideologies through authorization, affiliation, alienation and entrenchment which are in line with Thompson's Modes: legitimization, unification, fragmentation and reification. This study concludes that animated cartoons contribute to the spreading of certain ideologies.

In higher education, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statements are texts written by faculty members which explain their commitments to improving education for marginalized students. Requesting, reviewing, and acting upon DEI statements is just one practice, among others, which higher education institutions can use to transform individual and institutional practices, towards more just ends. However, DEI statements can become extensions of the curriculum vitae rather than opportunities for deeper critical reflection. In this study, we examine a large R1 university in the Southwestern US which required its faculty to submit written reflections about their contributions to diversity. We collected 22 statements from faculty in two disciplines: life sciences and quantitative sciences. Drawing on techniques from critical discourse analysis, we analyzed these statements to understand what meanings are expressed and what factors constrain or support faculty in writing more critical reflections. Results demonstrate that most faculty's statements: (a) do not clearly explicate DEI problems or causes;(b) over represent remedies to problems;and (c) locate problems within or between individuals, rather than within systems. We hypothesize that this is due (in part) to influence of major funding sources and broader neoliberal discourses about knowing, learning, and success in higher education.

This article analyzes the language reflecting power struggles experienced by individuals with depression in Thai literature, focusing on 'Stories from the Tip of the Iceberg', through critical discourse analysis. The study reveals that the literature employs language to signify these power struggles in two key ways: through vocabulary, specifically the use of verbs, and pragmatics, particularly the use of metaphors. A new conceptual framework emerges, offering perspectives on individuals with depression in Thai society that avoid portraying them as weak. However, the literature simultaneously generates a sub-discourse that negotiates power to establish this new framework. The researcher examines the discursive and socio-cultural practices involved in creating these counter-discourses, which are shaped in part by Thai societal processes that traditionally perceive individuals with depression as mentally disabled.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how critical discourse analysis (CDA) frameworks can be used in cross-cultural mental health recovery research. CDA is a qualitative approach that critically appraises how language contributes to producing and reinforcing social inequalities. CDA regards linguistic productions as reflecting, consciously or unconsciously, the narrators' understandings of, or attitudes about, phenomena. Mental health recovery research aims to identify and address power differentials, making CDA a potentially relevant approach. However, CDA frameworks have not been widely applied to mental health recovery research. We adapted established CDA frameworks to our cross-cultural mental health recovery study. The adapted methodology comprises (1) selecting discourses that indicate positive changes and (2) considering sociocultural practices informed by relevant cultural characteristics identified in our previous research, without placing valuejudgments. Our adapted framework can support cross-cultural mental health recovery research that uses CDA.

The indigenous education activist and feminist of the late Dutch colonial era, R.A. Kartini, has remained an enduring public icon for more than a century. While celebrated as a national hero in Indonesia, like many iconic women of the Global South, Kartini's symbolic force has been readily appropriated for political ends. As a 'floating signifier', her image absorbs fluctuating meanings and ideologies, making the analysis of her representation at a given point in time a valuable approach to political analysis. This article focuses on Kartini's portrayal in the second term of the Jokowi presidency in mainstream Indonesian online media discourse. Recognising the dialectical relationship between the online news media and dominant political discourse, we use critical discourse analysis to identify and examine the mainstream ideologies embedded in the news media's representations of Kartini. Our analysis provides a snapshot of dominant Indonesian political discourse, revealing a set of intersecting ideologies: conservative feminism, neoliberalism, softened Islamic piety, and perfunctory nationalism.
